ActionScript 2.0 :: Check An Array To See If An Element Has Already Been Added?
Feb 4, 2005
is there a way to check an array to see if an element has already been added? I'm working with an XML document where there are 4 possible variables, but these 4 vars are repeated several times over. It's reading in fine... I just want to pull those specific variables out of the XML and add them to an array, but I do not want them to duplicate. To say it another way... I don't want my array to be more than 4 items long (it is possible to be less) with a max of those 4 different vars.

How do I check if an element in an array exists?
I'm looking for something along the lines of this, but don't know the proper syntax:
ActionScript Code:
if(array[5].exists()) {
// Do something.
}
else {
// Do something else.
}

Well, I looked at the example, and looks like that was still not what I wanted. Interestingly, I took the middle for loop out and now it appears I am not having issues anymore.[code]

I'm using a multi-dimensional array (openImage[]) to track the open images in my multi-dimensional array (Images[]).
I would like to check and see if an element in a multi-dimensional array exists before I access it because there are rare occurrences where the data in openImage[] is not valid. I keep on getting errors every way I've tried it.[code]...

I'm adding a movieclip element ("lastSlide") to an other movieclip element("endLogoButton"). The added element has a child which is a button("endLogoButton"). How can I call that button?
mcSlideHolder.addChild(lastSlide);
/*mcSlideHolder.getChildByName("endLogoButton").buttonMode = true;;
mcSlideHolder.getChildByName("endLogoButton").mouseChildren = false;
mcSlideHolder.getChildByName("endLogoButton").useHandCursor = true;*/
lastSlide.endLogoButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, linkClick);
It always tells me that the access to a Nullobject reference is not possible.

When adding/removing elements to/from a VGroup I need it to happen smoothly, resize the item. I believe I have to use transition effects. But how?
At item (element) level? At VGroup level? Should I use a DataGroup instead and do it at ItemRenderer level?
I've been trying to do it at item level but I still didn't manage to make it work and somehow it doesn't feel right. It feels like it should be done at a higher level.
For example, I defined a "death" state which resizes the item to height=0. But then, after it shrunk, it has to somehow notify VGroup in order for it to be removed or remove itself from VGroup. It feels unnecessarily complicated.
way to associate an effect to inserting and removing items from a VGroup?

I want to check if the element in this structure exists for each child. The problem is that the children don't have the same name (product,prepack) and I don't want to change the order. Additionally I can't change the XML structure.

Is it possible to check, using Javascript and without altering the ActionScript code at all, if a child has been added to the stage? I have in mind something like being able to call GetChildByName in Javascript, and if the child exists, call another javascript function.

I'm working on building a gallery, but I've run into a slight snag. The full-size images are not all the same size. In the showPicture function, is there a way for it to check to make sure there isn't an image already loaded, and if there is, to remove it before adding the new one? [code]...

I don't work with the Flash IDE very much, and I'm running into a problem with the unreliable creation order of components instantiated by the Flash IDE "magic".
Basically, I have to call a function on a loaded module. This function should only be called after all the module's children have been added to the stage.[code]...

Say I start at a leaf node, and I traverse up the tree by using .parent(). I need an exit condition once it hits root. At the moment, I'm using parent.@name != "root", where name is just an attribute, but shouldn't I be able to check the type of element as well? How? Also, is there another way to end the traversal in as3?

I know how to remove duplicates from an array, but what I'm trying to do is prevent an item from ever being added to an array in the first place if it already exists. I'm pulling in data from an xml feed in a loop, and I thought that searching for that values index would work, but no matter what, the index is always -1. Here's my code:
[Code]...
Maybe I'm misunderstanding the indexOf function, but I thought it was supposed to return -1 if a value did not exist in an array. What am I doing wrong?

I'm trying to check if a clicked element is inside of an IVisualElement in Flex 4. So I want something like "if this element is in this element, then execute function". I'm aware of the 'parent' property but this doesn't seem to work when my element is not a direct child of the element but for example 3 levels deep.

Is it possible to, if you have an array of class names like ActionScript Code: var city01names:Array = ["pic_01", "pic_02", "pic_03" ...] make a new array which would read these names, instantiate them, and push them into a new array containing the instances of all these pictures, which I could then use for a slideshow?

I have an array called dropTarg1 which stores dropped-in items.I want to loop through this array and in a textfield, display each array item on a new line of this text fieldI think I need to use something like Array.join("/n") but I can't get it working properly. I hope that the /n would create a new line of the text field called reviewBoxContentText.
for(var i:Number = 0; i<dropTarg.length; i++){

I have 4 buttons and an empty array. When a button is clicked,I'm adding a element to an array with array.push. However, I want to check the array 1st to see if that element exists. If so, then don't add it. Here's what I have thus far
[Code]...
Now I'm taking it I'd have a conditional statement to see if the element already exists. Unfortunatly I cannot just disable the button. I searched the AS dictionary but oddly enough it doesn't have an easy way to search an array. And IndexOf seems to only work for a string.

I know how to get one element from the array. But I don't know let's say how to take 3 elements ( position 0,1,2). I don't know how to trace all the three together. I am getting errors all the time.
var myArray:Array = [1,2,3,4,5];
trace(myArray[0]);
trace(myArray[0], ?,?);

I'm trying to make a memory like game. It might be called Simon or Simple Simon or something. Basically something is shown for a second and then gone, then the user clicks that something. Then two or three things are shown in order and then gone and the user clicks the order.
I'm stuck at the very beginning, just showing something from an array for half a second or so then stopping and then starting over and adding one more element.

This is for a small RTS prototype I'm working on for some fun, but I've hit a snag.
For examples sake, I've got two arrays, activeAgents and houseArray. A number of movieclips (player controled units/agents) are stored in activeAgents and houseArray is used to store any agent that is "inside" the house.
If an agent in activeAgents hitTests the house that houseArray belongs to and the agent ISN'T already in the houseArray, then I want to add the agent from activeAgents INTO the houseArray.[code]...

This results in:
1:[object #7, class 'Array'],
I'm would like to set arrayA[i] to the value of arrayB[j], not set arrayA[i] to the object arrayB[j].
I can't use .toString() as I'm trying to pass on an array inside an array.
