ActionScript 2.0 :: Create Xml-driven - Thumbnail-based Image Galleries
Apr 30, 2007
I have seen many tutorials on how to create xml-driven, thumbnail-based image galleries, but I am looking for one which can do a "Before and After" photo effect. I'm designing a realtor's website and want a "before and after" gallery to show work being done on some homes, before construction and after construction. So, basically, you have two photos, same size, overlaying each other, and use maybe an Alpha fade to "merge one photo into another"? Something which slowly fades one into another, not just something which does a complete Alpha fade out, then a complete Alpha fade in.

I'm in the midst of creating my very first portfolio site completely in Flash. I followed the tutorial [url]... to create a nice looking gallery. Now, my problem is that I need to create two other galleries for the same website. All three galleries will be on three different pages. The actionscript doesn't seem to work if I try top use different folders and file names, and I can't even make a second gallery in a separate .fla file so I can access the gallery externally via movieclip. I've gone through countless threads on different forums to try to find my answer, but nothing seems to work.

I am using Flash CS4. I insert and build a SWF file just fine. In the component inspector there is a preview entry but there is a note that says it is only for development not runtime. It says to use ActionScript and the Export option. I have used the Export Option to create the thumbnail image but I have no idea how to setup the ActionScript.

I'm setting this thread up to field questions or issues with a Multi-part tutorial I'm working on here:

The tutorial thread has been locked to keep it clean and not become a 48 page monster that would be no help to anyone.

I am creating a thumbnail scroller and I have everything set to work. The last final issue I'm having is this:
The scroller displays 25 items.
8 at a time.
When you page left/page right it scrolls to the next(or previous) 8 thumbs in the list.
This is what we want to happen:
Once the final (25th) thumb is reached it starts over on the first thumb again and we are back at 1. So that it becomes an endless loop.[code]...

I need to create an image gallery, based on an XML file, which displays both the thumbnails and the normal-sized images. Here's a link for you to get an idea of pretty much what I want to achieve, except for the fact that I don't want the thumbnails to slide to the left or right, I'd rather want them to be static, and if there are more thumbnails than, let's say 3, to display a "previous-next" controller. After following some tutorials, here's what I created so far:(you can also find all these files + the thumbnails in the attachment)The XML file (settings.xml):
PHP Code:
<slideshow>
<images>
<thumb tLink="th/01.jpg" desc="This is the first thumbnail" bLink="bigImgs/01b.jpg" />
<thumb tLink="th/02.jpg" desc="This is the second thumbnail" bLink="bigImgs/02b.jpg" />
[code]....
So far, so good, the script does trace what I told it to But I need to further improve this rather simple script. So, basically here's what I need:How do I load each thumbnail into a "container" movieclip, so I can further manipulate this movieclip's properties (do an easing for position, alpha, filters etc.)? There's one more thing I need to specify: I want to display only, let's say, 3 thumbnails at runtime, not all of them. how could I assign an instance name to each of them.

Is there anyway to take take a "screenshot", "save" or "capture" the active SWF element on a page as an image? I'd like for users to be able to simply click a button on my page, instead of having to need to manually take a screenshot of the entire page and then crop the image to show only the SWF element.I found a Jquery method, although I am unsure if it could work with SWF files. It basically captures an area of an Image element on the page and allows you to save that as a separate image. What I would need however, is to capture the SWF as the image instead. Note: I do not have access to the SWF code so I cannot achieve this using Actionscript or anything like that

I have a Flash component that links to a gallery, and I understand that I can create buttons to point to multiple galleries. (waiting too long for support from the suppliers).The User Guide says that I can use the following to create the connection:
myThumbnailer2.loadGallery(24);
That won't work, and it says that I need to include it in an onclipevent. I have no idea what i am doing and I was hoping someone could tell me what to script to get the text button I created to run this.

I've created a photo gallery that dynamically loads images into a movieclip entitled 'gallery'. Right now the images are listed in an array. is it possible to make an Array of Arrays so that I could load different Arrays for different image galleries? Is this somewhat how it would work? Lets say I were to switch to a section entitled 'landscapes' which we will pretend is the array "var a:Array = new Array();" for now.
ActionScript Code:
var a:Array = new Array(
"a1.jpg",[code]....

I am loading some separate .swf image galleries in my main .fla; when you go to different sections the image galleries still stay there. How do I make them go away? When you click on the background it takes you to another spot on the timeline and the gallery should disappear, but it just stays there.

I am making a set of image galleries which will have looping background music. What are your opinions about the recommended method to bring music in? I am happy with the attachSound and loadSound methods, but wondered whether attaching a soundtrack.swf using loadMovieNum would be better. If so, I only know how to stop and start the music, not pause it and restart where it left off, which is important if I add a narration. Sound Objects seem more versatile because they let you use "position/1000", but from what I have found on the forums I have searched through, I may have to load the swf into a Movieclip or perhaps use _level somewhow?
Here is the code, which works well, but does not "pause" the music, it just stops and starts at the beginning. Code is in the root timeline of my soundControls_mc (play/pause button).
[Flash 8 - AS2]
loadMovieNum("includes/number10.swf", 100);
soundOn = true;
this.onRelease = function() {
if (soundOn == true) {
unloadMovieNum(100);
[Code] .....

I have found out that I can not use loaderInfo.getBytesLoaded in as3. I have a gallery located here: [URL]the functionality is almost complete, but my gallery still has issues loading all the thumbnails. It seems that sometimes they wont load while sometimes they do. I have split my thumbnail process into:
LoadThumbs: Loads the thumbs
Callthumbs:Arranges the thumbs
Each function is called once per thumbnail. My problem is that I can not find the bytes loaded information for the thumbnail as it loads. Event completion and preloaders dont seem to help. I doubt it's my alpha tween because the thumbs are un click-able when they are not there. This is the info for my function, with the comments indicating the parts that bring up errors.
Code:
function loadThumbs()
{
x_counter = 0;
y_counter = 0;
[code]...
How do I get the loaded info of each thumb as it loads? Do i need to make a new class file?

I'm looking to do a sliding image menu like this one: [URL]. I can do this using tweening but it is not as smooth as using actionscript. Does anyone know what the name of this is as when I do a search as I can't find any solutions? I've tried 'thumbnail expand' and 'image easing' but am not getting any hits.

I have found an excellent tutorial and source file for a 3D image gallery. However I would like to make the thumbnail click thorugh to a url link when pressed rather than loading the image into the gallery.
Currently the images load in through actionscript. Is there a way to amend this script so you can specify that a thumbnail clicked links through to a url, like you would with a normal button instance rather than loading the image. Here is a link to the file and tutorial. The actionscript is on the top layer within the file.[URL]...

As far as I know, what I ask here isn't possible, but I thought I'd ask anyway in case I'm missing something.
Suppose you want to let users upload JPG images, and these images are scaled into smaller icons and the original images are always discarded and never required again. Is there any way that would commonly work in most modern browsers that would let the user select a single image on their hard drive, have that LOCALLY turned into a thumbnail and upload the created thumbnail to a server?
In a case where the server just needs a small image, it would be wasteful both in user time and server resources to proceed uploading the whole image, only to immediately discard it. It would be much better to just scale it on the client.
I can imagine three options. Just plain HTML/Javascript, using Flash or using Java. If this were possible with Flash, that would seem like the best option. But reading flash.net.FileReference documentation, it seems that you can upload a file from the HD yes, but you cannot look inside the file you are uploading. On the other hand, if you enable "can access local files" in Flash publishing options, it seems that you can then no longer access the net, so that doesn't work.
With HTML/Javascript, it is possible to load images and display them on a <canvas>, but if you try to access the pixels of these images, you get security violations, so that doesn't seem to work.
Java I hesitate to use, because only 96.52% of my users have it installed, and the file upload dialogs I have seen implemented in Java (at Facebook for example) have not worked well (unresponsive interface). I wonder though if Java is the only thing allowing resizing images from local HD?

I'm learning XML in AS3 and I am having real trouble finding a resource that can help me learn how to build a very simple XML-driven picture gallery.
I am working in an FLA file with AS3, with a dynamic text field with the instance name "textfield". I also have a UILoader Component with the instance name "UILoaderComponent" and an XML file called "rootdir.xml".[code]...
My objective is: I simply want to build a menu inside a textbox called "textfield" that lists images1-5, and when clicked, calls upon the relevant image. For instance: I load the file "rootdir.xml" into the file "index.fla". I call a function to parse the XML into a dynamic text box called "textfield". When image 2 is clicked on the textbox "textfield", it would call upon a function that would load into the UIComponent Loader "image2.jpg".
