May 18, 2005is there any way to get to _root functions after assigning Lockroot?
i tried _level10.loadImages();
(loadImages is my own function)

I'm trying to get the arrow keys on the keyboard to control timeline navigation. The AS3 code i'm using works the first time, but then goes a bit crazy and stops working for some reason. Please see my attached fla. In the example you're supposed to be able to navigate along the timeline using the arrow keys (going back and forth) I'm sure there's a really easy solution to this problem but I'm new to AS3 and can't figure it out.
View 1 RepliesI am working on a page where three differnt buttons effect one movie clips properties, the one movie clip will go to its rollover state when any of the buttons are on rollover, hmm, that sounds about right] i have assigned functions within a loop and the rollovers, rollouts and instance in the loop have been defined for all but the movieClips dont go to the right place. the code i have used is this....

I have a few rows of movie clips making a menu. Because I will be adding to the number of MC's I use a variable called "menuitems" and run a FOR loops to assign all of these MC's onrollOver, onrollOut and onRelease functions. I'm doing this to save having to assign these functions to them individualy (as they are the same functions). Its works fine, but when the MC is released it is told to jump to frame 2, where there will be nested mc's that need to be able to clicked and rolled over. Because the parent movie has event functions assigned to it they seem to overide them. Is there a way around this? I tried placing a transparent MC on the 1st frame of the movie and trying to assign the onRelease function to the "hotspot" but it doesnt work. Here is my code:
Code:
function buildthumbs () {
for (i=1; i<= menuitems; i++) {[code]...........

all the traces show up correct but not the gotoAndStop on the movieClip (inter+i+_mc_)'s.
I have a array of MC that are placed on the stage to make up a logo what i would like is to fade through the clips. I thought i could creat an array and atach a fade function to it but it dosn't seem to work.

I have been trying to figure out this by myself for a while and needless to say, I have been completely unsuccessful. I have various a loop that creates multiple movie clips called: movie1, movie2, movie3, movie4... (you get the idea...) i want to assign roll over,roll out, press functions to all of theme.g. when you press on one movie, it highlights it.but I am trying to find a summarized way over writing each one out:
movie1.onRollOver=function(){
something happens
}
someonne once told me to use chartAt to do this, to reference different mcs, but I cant figure out how to do it.
is that possible? i'm a complete beginner when it comes to flash and actionscript... so if it sounds like i dont know what i'm talking about... it's because i don't!let me describe my situation...I have about 20 boxes... and on each box i want to assign the onPress to trace the value corresponding to an Array at element "i" in the console...instead of doing:
Code:
box1.onPress = function() {
trace("the value is: "+hypotheticalArray[1]);

For the past half-year I've been coding like this:
ActionScript Code:
_root.menu_mc.link1.onRollOver = function () {
_root.menu_mc.link1.text.htmlText = "<FONT COLOR='#000000'>" + "Cool" + "</FONT>";
_root.menu_mc.link1.text.thickness = 100;

I know and I've seen some more efficent code such as, making loops and assigning variables.
get started by making the above code more efficient? I've attached the source file.
here's the essence of what i'm doing:
[Code]....
why does this work:
[AS]for(i=0;i<perPage;i++){
with(_root.attachMovie("entry","entry"+i,i)){
_root["entry"+i].onRollOver = function(){

I am in the process of writing a scrolling image viewer that dynamically updates from an xml file. I have written the scroll function (with a lot of help from Kirupa and other sources), and the pictures are updating beautifully, but when it comes to adding the function for the buttons I am encountering an unusual error.
Using the following code:
Code:
initButtons=function(){
for (var i in btnArray) {
var btn:MovieClip = btnArray[i];
[code]....
from this site results in the doClick function being called for each of the buttons in the btn array at runtime, and then not working afterwards.
I'm having some weirdness with a project that I'm doing in IE. Long story short, I've got a basic shell that loads in external SWFs based on user feedback. Once those SWFs get loaded in, they execute functions from the shell (_root) movie. It works great in Firefox, but immediately breaks (no way) in IE. The movie gets loaded in, but none of the functions run.
I suspect it has something to do with security, because, for a variety of reasons, I have to load the SWFs from their absolute location, rather than their relative location. When I test it locally (but loading the movies from their absolute, live location), everything still works, but I get that damn security warning that reads like this:
[Code]....
Can any one please let me know how do i _lockRoot in as3.
View 1 Repliesusing the search function i've found really many threads about the sound-not-playing issues involved with loadMovies methods, and some solutions as well...But they ain't working in my case.Architecture:- one Main Movieclip (mainmovie.swf);- one Music player (musicplayer.swf);Music player is loaded into Main Movieclip through a loadMovie call;absolute path to target would be _root.mp3cont (in Main Movieclip obviously);the loadMovie call happens on the AS layer in the _root of Main Movieclip;
In the code below i want to change the _root.broj and _root.logo variables inside the function which returns values from .php file. Inside the function everything works fine and all values are correct but when i trace var broj outside the function it's still 0.
var result_lv:LoadVars = new LoadVars();
var send_lv:LoadVars = new LoadVars();
var broj:Number=0;
var logo = new Array();
[Code].....
im lookin to make this so that the points taken from the _root.cargo are multipled by 10 and added to _root.totalscore

Is it possible to bypass this.lockroot = true; for just one function?
And make sure it stays lock for the rest of the code...
if a condition is true, then:_root.(MC with instance name that is the value of "_root.eelmine").nextFrame(); is this correct?_root._root[eelmine].nextFrame();
View 16 RepliesI just recently began migrating from AS2 to AS3, and I have of course realized that I can no longer move the "_root" by changing the _x and _y positions of the _root (which no longer exists in AS3). How can I do this in AS3 (specifying _x, _y, _z possibly of the "_root")?
View 2 RepliesI have a series of calculations i'm doing over a bunch of objects stored in a array. Each function is pretty CPU demanding but if you only run one function, it just works fine.

I've got a project thats getting a bit big, so Im taking the actionscript out into separate as files. I want all the basic functions to be in BasicFunctions.as and the make a library for more specific functions. I find that a lot of people use the import statement but I cant get that to work with a simple Hello World trace, yet the include statement works fine (see attached). I understand that import/include work differently, but which is the better method? If import, then is that heavier to work with. Any rate, what's the best way to organise code when it gets to the 1000+ lines?

I'm trying to find a way to have global functions in my as project, similar to how flash does with stuff like the util functions (describeType()...), where you can just call the function wherever you need it. For example:
[Code]...
So when I call Test(), it prints out "hello world" fine. My problem comes in that I can't change the name of the Test function, and I can't add any other functions without compiler errors. Is it possible to have a load of global functions in one file, or do I have to split them up into separate files like in the example? Also, I know that I can make a Global class and call static functions like Code: Global.doSomething() but I'd like to know if there's a way to do it as flash does it (describeType(), getDefinitionByName(), etc), or rather, how does flash do it?
Is it not possible to call other functions from generic mouse event functions?
Code:
_root.myButton.onPress = function(){
hide();

I have one function that puts text in a text field and makes a button goto a url onRelease.The code is like this:
Code:
item.onRelease = function() {
myButton.onRelease = function() {
getURL("http://google.com", "_blank");
}
talk = this.txt;
}
the only problem is that the button doesn't work onRelease. i think that it is because there are too many functions there, but at the same time,
in this example why the values of (12) and (21,39) are lost at the geo and geo1 functions

Im adding lot of simple functions to prototypes of top level objects ( Object , Array , String ...) and have 2 questions :
Is possible to add functions to top level's classes in compile-time ?
If not , is there a way to allow this functions to compile ? I dont like to turn off strict mode
ex:
string.removeWhiteSpace();
string.sliceStr("." , "end");
textField.scrollBottom();
this return compile-time error , cause there is no such function , i have to write it in braces :
string["removeWhiteSpace"]();
string["sliceStr"]("." , "end");
textField["scrollBottom"]();
and i like to aviod it )
Is it not possible to call other functions from generic mouse event functions? Surely it is !!??ie....
Code:
_root.myButton.onPress = function(){
hide();

Functions embedded inside other functions? In all my years of ActionScript programming, I've never seen this (this is part of legacy code written by someone else which I am adapting):

Its a complicated senario for me. I have a sound management singleton with an asset like dictionary storing all referances to my urls and assets and the guff inside it-
I have a function called addItem(id:String, url:String):Object
I would love to do something similar as soundManager.addItem(id:String, url:String).play() or soundManager.addItem(id:String, url:String).stop() of which it'll both add my item to my dictionary, and begin playing the sound
