ActionScript 2.0 :: Instance Name Or Not - Main Timeline Stops Working

I`m experiencing problems with an XML menu. It works fine, but when I try to insert it into a mc other than the main timeline it stops working. I believe that I have trouble with the names of the mc (or instance name). could the "menu" in this string be a signifier for an instance (mc) ??
got the fading working on an xml driven gallery i made, but after clicking the images a few times the fade effect gets faster and faster and eventually stops working.

When creating a dropdown for a button, I noticed the dropdown will stop working if the button does not run the entire length of the timeline. i.e.: if you navigate to a page that is out of that button's "range" it will stop working unless reset by returning to the root page. Nesting the problematic button in a movie, however, solves this problem...
How would I reference a button instance on the main timeline in the actionscript within a movie clip symbol?For example: btn1.addEventListener (MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, main1Over);where btn1 is an instance of a button on the main timeline but is not found within the symbol itself.I will then be dragging that movie clip onto the main timeline when it's finished.
I have a main timline with MCs in it. when the MC gets to the last frame, there's an onEnterFrame event telling the main timline to go back to frame 129 (labled "b1") and play.
I got the MovieClip(root).gotoAndPlay("b1"); part added to my function to call the root. however, when I test the movie, it does everything correct except play. it goes to b1 and stops. here's my as3:

why it won't play? I've tried using just the frame number and that won't help either. there's nothing else on the main timeline to stop the movie...
I am building a basic 6 page web site with each page labeled on the main timeline I have put the stop(); command on the very first frame of my timeline with the button commands below it - but when I test the movie - the whole clip just loops repeatedly - ignoring the stop

The external swf loads on clicking the button and unloads when left arrow is pressed and the main time line frame appears. But thereafter the keyboard navigation in the main timeline(through function fl_changeSlide) is not working properly.
Either the search function isn't working or no one has asked this but in all of my googling and section, I cannot find an answer to what seems to be an easy question. I have a nested movie clip. In the last frame of this movie clip I have a button that I want to gotoAndStop(21); to the main timeline but cannot figure it out. I have read this question asked several times while googling and not one answer surprisingly.
I have tried xxxx.gotoAndStop(21); with xxxx being parent, _parent, _main etc but there must be some way to do this I would think. If not via button then even just an action at the last frame that says to mainTimeline.gotoAndStop(21); Obviously mainTimeline is not correct but to give another example.

I am on the main stage. In a layer I create a button. I double click on this button to enter its layer. I then do some AS3 to say if the play button is pressed, to change to a pause button. How would I say "If the main timeline is finished, change to the play button"? I am trying
I have an all flash website I am finishing. On the "index" page of it, there are 7 buttons all pointing to different painting galleries on another page (or another MC in this case).
These 7 buttons happen to be movieclips so that I can have animation on rollover and rollout. A sample of the current AS2 code for them is below:

In this case, on the index page there is a movieclip with successful animation on rollover/rollout. I assign this clip the instance name of "gallery0" and when clicked, goes to a separate page showing the first gallery.
My problem is this, whenever I do assigned the instance name to any of the 7 movieclips, the animation no longer works. It simply sits there in the default state and acts as it should as far as navigation goes.
I'm trying to cobble together the simplest preloader possible from various AS3 tutorials and settled on the preloader coding below.

My AS3 syntax checks OK, but when I test the movie it displays frame 5 and stops there. I can briefly see the preloader display. Without the preloader it runs to the end.
I cannot seem to find anything of what I need from google.(Well, I can find the reverse method to what i need ) Basically I wish to access a variable declared in the Root Timeline from my Movie clips timeline.
I simply want to assign a variable to the current frame of the main timeline (not movieclip timeline) I already know about _currentframe and it doesn't help in this case.

I have a file comprised of 1 scene and two movie clips. The clips are instanced into the Main Timeline and occupy Frames 1 and 2 respectively.MovieClip1 is an animation that has navigation buttons that appear at the end of the clip. I'm trying to get mouse click navigation to make Frame 2 on the Main Timeline active.

this takes the animation to Frame 2 of the Movie Clip Timeline not Frame 2 the Main Timeline.
I'm having some problem with the workflow of flash.I make web banners everyday att my work att it is important to me to have the banners easy structured so I can copy effects, tweens and symbols to a new banner. I have Flash CS3 pro.I always start by making a symbols. And then in the symbols own timeline I make the animation or effect.
The big problem I'm having is when I have the main (scene1) timeline with many frames, and then have symbols on that timeline, with it's own timeline with some frames. The frames in the symbol timeline is okey, but at the main timeline the frames is too short or too long so the animation of the symbol cuts of early or it plays more than one time (too many frames).
How do I calculate how long a symbols timeline should be so It maches the main timeline?What happens to me is that I always have to adjust the symbols timeline and the main timeline, and this I have to do many times.
I have a Flash website that moves from page to page by jumping to various frames in the timeline. Clicking on a button causes a jump to a specific frame. It is necessary to have stops in several frames. I'm trying to run an mp3 player in the background. The player is running on it's own layer. It works when I launch the page and when I go from page to page until I hit a frame with a stop at which point, the player stops. How can I prevent this?
I have a main.fla which has 3 movieclips inside it. All 3 mc's have timelines that run 40 frames. The main.fla timeline has each mc instance on a frame. mc_1 is on frame 1 mc_2 is on frame 40 mc_3 is on frame 81 as the main timeline plays the clips each one fades to the other. I need to know how to target this scenerio after mc_3 plays I need to have a goToAndplay (20) set up so the animation inside mc_1 starts playing (frame 20) of mc_1.

I have a variable set in the actual frame on the main-timeline but the movieclip doesn't catch that, when traced I get undefined. Can I send a value from the main-timeline to a moviclips timeline?
I have some movie clips that hold the contents. (ie I have a movie clip to hold my navigation buttons and another to hold the actual content.) I wrote some action script on a separate layer that is outside of the movie clips, the AS adds event listeners and a few simple functions. All my navigational buttons work prefectly, I have a button that I use for email, this works the first the frame is loaded. If I go to another frame (another page of the website), and then go back, the button no longer works, I tested with just using trace("the email button was clicked"); oh, I thought I might add that each page of the website is a different frame, that is inside my content movie clip. my AS looks like this:
I updated FlashPro from 10.0 to 10.0.2 through the adobe updater.After the update applied, Flash ignores any code entered on my action layers as if it were not there, even simple stop(); command.
I have a Flash Animation which i am running in a Browser Window .. Suppose a Man moving from Left to Right and also a BackGround MusicNow when I change the browser Tab to suppose check my gmail account while the man completes his walk from Left to Right .. The problem is the music is running but the man freezes at his place and continues his animation only after i return to the Flash animation containing browser Tab.
