ActionScript 2.0 :: Override Static Functions Of Flash Top Level Classes?

Jun 6, 2006

Is there any way to override static functions of Flash top level classes? Lets take Stage or Math for example. What if we want to change Stage.addListener functionality, is there any solution to this problem?

Xml :: Structure Classes To Avoid Using Static Functions?

Nov 16, 2011

I have a Flash application that creates a sort of powerpoint presentation. All the 'slides' are stored in an XML files which is read and processed.

I'm trying to build the presentation using this XML file. At the moment, my main class has it's initial function main and a static function processXML main initiates my database class with a function called initDB. One of my issues is that initDB forgoes processing because it's dependant on an event listener. On completion of loading the XML files, the event listener initiates my static function on my main to create objects from this file.

The issue is that because the event listener continues the processing (after an indeterminate amount of time), the functions are no longer controlled by the main class.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Static Function Can't Find Non-static Functions

Jan 6, 2010

Ok, so I have a bit of a mess here (Which I'm probably not doing right anyway, which could be my problem...). I have a document class, I'll call it as Body.as, that creates an object from another class known as Headgear.as. There are also other objects created from other classes, or will be in the future. Now, amoung all this, Headgear.as and all of the other classes Body.as will use to make objects require the use of dragging functions (starting and stopping dragging). On stopping drags, position checks are then made to compare a particular hidden movieclip with the dragged MC.

To try and save myself some hassle (from making the same functions over and over to ensuring that when the objects are created I don't need to send a complete crapload of variables just to ensure the position checking function would work), I had the functions for the event listeners (Which are set-up on the draggable MCs in Headgear.as) just direct to functions in Body.as

ActionScript 3.0 :: Flash :: Static Stop/Play Functions?

Jan 26, 2012

I would want to use the frameScript method to add some stop and play methods to some frames.Normally I would declare the stop function:

HTML Code:

private function $FUN_FrameStop():void { stop(); return; }
and then use it like this:

Code:

addFrameScript(47, $FUN_FrameStop, 122, $FUN_FrameStop);
My question is, how can I create the same $FUN_FrameStop as a static function?

Static functions do not allow the use of this since static members are bound to a class and are not inherited by that class' instances. So, is there a way to create a function similar to $FUN_FrameStop, but static?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Can't Override Or Overload Constructors Of Derived Classes Correct?

Nov 19, 2008

Is my understanding that there are no Abstract classes and you can't override or overload constructors of derived classes correct? Abstract classes aren't important for me but if it's possible I'd like to know how. But is there a way to overload default constructors and I'm just doing something wrong? Can we only override methods or can we overload them also.For a simple game I'm making, I'm not using FlexBuilder and don't want to for this project for specific reasons, so I'm using Flash and instead of using sprites and bitmaps I want to draw shapes in Flash and covert them into MovieClip symbols which I "link" for export as AS to use in my code. I want to make it a little modular so I can just change certain aspects of the code for different approaches.If I create a class Actor which extends MovieClip the default constructor has to be Actor() with no arguments. But I'd like my class to be able to have arguments like initial x and y coordinates. I know you can just create methods to initialize each part but I'd like to try and have a default constructor to do so.

In Flash I notice that if you derive a written class or built in class it requires the standard default constructor, "which I may be wrong about and I hope I am and someone could show me what I'm doing wrong", I found if you derive a class based on a symbol you linked for export as AS I can create a new constructor with whatever argument(s) I want (so this is why I'm making this post,if I can do this couldn't there be a way to override
constructors?).

1) So I create a base class called Actor which extends MovieClip save it as Actor.as and default constructor of Actor() add whatever properties I want.

2) Then I create an object in my library, let's call it mcShip, then I link that symbol for export as ActionScript and have it's base class as Actor and name the class ShipMC.

3) I then create a new .as file and call this one ShipActor.as, this class ShipActor extends ShipMC and then I create a default constructor ShipActor(gs:GameScreen, xA:Number,
yA:Number) and this works fine (also I create a method in Actor class called ActorSuper and call it from ShipActor with passed in arguments, since I don't know of a way to overload the parent class' constructor)

If I were to just have my mcShip with a base class of flash.display.MovieClip and I try to create ShipActor with the constructor above it says missing default constructor. The above 3 steps is the only way I can get it to work for now. Is there a way to overload the constructor? If not are there any other work arounds?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Flash Classes, Collisions And Functions - Check If A Ball Is Hitting Another?

Oct 11, 2010

Im working in FlashDevelop on a 'breakout' game where you control a paddle with your mouse and a ball bounces around the screen and breaks blocks.Right now I have a Main, Paddle, and Ball class. In the main class I added a Paddle called player as a public static variable. In my Ball class I have a collisionCheck() function. This way I can access 'player' from within my Ball class for testing collisions.

At somepoint in the game there will be a powerup that adds mutiple balls to the stage. Right now I have a function in the main class call addBall() to add a new Ball to the stage.I am now running into trouble. Working on the collision check method in my Ball class, I dont know how to check if a ball is hitting another ball because as of right now, balls are being added with the addBall function, so they can't be declared as public static variables.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Static Classes Shared Across Multiple SWF's?

Apr 11, 2009

How do Static classes work in projects where child swf's use the same Static class as their parent?

For simplicity... lets say we have some older content swf files that are using TweenLite version 8 ( a common enough Static class.) But the parent SWF is being updated and uses a more recent version of TweenLite (version 10). The child SWF's are loaded into the parent SWF. Do the child SWF exist in there own sandbox and have TweenLite version 8 running and the Parent runs it's own copy of TweenLite 10? Or does the parents clips Static class of TweenLite (version 10) overwrite the children Static class using some sort of magical shared memory space when JIT (runtime) compiling?

Flex :: Design - Static Functions Or Events?

Feb 1, 2011

I'm working with an application which was originally designed to make heavy use of static-variables and functions to impose singleton-style access to objects. I've been utilizing Parsley to break apart some of the coupling in this project, and I'd like to start chiseling away at the use of static functions. I will explain the basic architecture first, and then I'll ask my questions. Within this application exists a static utility which sends/receives HTTP requests. When a component wishes to request data via HTTP, it invokes a static function in this class: Utility.fetchUrl(url, parameters, successHandler, errorHandler); This function calls another static function in a tracking component which monitors how long requests take, how many are sent, etc. The invocation looks very similar in the utility class:

ActionScript 3.0 :: Using Static Variable To Create External Classes?

Feb 25, 2011

I've rarely used static variables or methods when creating external classes, but I have on occasion, and it's very useful when I need global access to a value. I've seen negative criticism on the use of the "static" keyword, but never understood why. Is there a right and wrong way of using it, or is this not true? I'd like to use it in a context similar to classes such as MouseEvent or TextFieldAutoSize, where there is a list of values globally accessible for identification purposes.

It allows better code readability, and also allows for easy customization in the future. The value of TextFieldAutoSize.NONE is "none", but as long as a programmer used the reference TextFieldAutoSize.NONE and not the string literal "none", Adobe could change the value of TextFieldAutoSize.NONE to be "hahahahaha" and everything would still work just dandy because (TextFieldAutoSize.NONE == TextFieldAutoSize.NONE) is still true even though ("none" == "hahahahaha") is not.

Is there any kind of negative impact on using static variables this way? Or even functions for that matter? I'd just like to clarify this before I go and build a large project around the idea this is perfectly okay.
