Xml :: Structure Classes To Avoid Using Static Functions?

Nov 16, 2011

I have a Flash application that creates a sort of powerpoint presentation. All the 'slides' are stored in an XML files which is read and processed.

I'm trying to build the presentation using this XML file. At the moment, my main class has it's initial function main and a static function processXML main initiates my database class with a function called initDB. One of my issues is that initDB forgoes processing because it's dependant on an event listener. On completion of loading the XML files, the event listener initiates my static function on my main to create objects from this file.

The issue is that because the event listener continues the processing (after an indeterminate amount of time), the functions are no longer controlled by the main class.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Static Function Can't Find Non-static Functions

Jan 6, 2010

Ok, so I have a bit of a mess here (Which I'm probably not doing right anyway, which could be my problem...). I have a document class, I'll call it as Body.as, that creates an object from another class known as Headgear.as. There are also other objects created from other classes, or will be in the future. Now, amoung all this, Headgear.as and all of the other classes Body.as will use to make objects require the use of dragging functions (starting and stopping dragging). On stopping drags, position checks are then made to compare a particular hidden movieclip with the dragged MC.

To try and save myself some hassle (from making the same functions over and over to ensuring that when the objects are created I don't need to send a complete crapload of variables just to ensure the position checking function would work), I had the functions for the event listeners (Which are set-up on the draggable MCs in Headgear.as) just direct to functions in Body.as

ActionScript 3.0 :: Classes Does Not Seem To Resemble The Hierarchy / Structure

Jul 10, 2010

I am confused as to why on your C Drive the folder structure in regards to classes in flash does not seem to resemble the hierarchy/structure when you are actually using them? For example, I kind of expected there to be a Classes folder with Top-Level Classes, then two sub folders, the fl. folder and flash. folder, and in them, packges...etc...

Instead there is a "FP7" folder, "FP8" folder, "FP9" folder, "FP10" folder, an "mx" folder, and a toplevel.as class. FP7 and MX seem to hold a lot of the primary classes that I am most familiar with...but how do they relate? I thought I would find the Sprite class in a display package/folder...but have yet to locate it (my search feature is weird at the moment, I am not sure why it can't really even find anything, even though I know that that thing exists).

How does this relate to the hierarchy / structure of classes when you are using it? I am basically trying to visually things but am confused. I may need to explain a bit more later... how to put into words at the moment...

This is essentially what I'm using:

public static function get bar():int {return bar;}

ActionScript 2.0 :: Static Classes Shared Across Multiple SWF's?

Apr 11, 2009

How do Static classes work in projects where child swf's use the same Static class as their parent?

For simplicity... lets say we have some older content swf files that are using TweenLite version 8 ( a common enough Static class.) But the parent SWF is being updated and uses a more recent version of TweenLite (version 10). The child SWF's are loaded into the parent SWF. Do the child SWF exist in there own sandbox and have TweenLite version 8 running and the Parent runs it's own copy of TweenLite 10? Or does the parents clips Static class of TweenLite (version 10) overwrite the children Static class using some sort of magical shared memory space when JIT (runtime) compiling?

Flex :: Design - Static Functions Or Events?

Feb 1, 2011

I'm working with an application which was originally designed to make heavy use of static-variables and functions to impose singleton-style access to objects. I've been utilizing Parsley to break apart some of the coupling in this project, and I'd like to start chiseling away at the use of static functions. I will explain the basic architecture first, and then I'll ask my questions. Within this application exists a static utility which sends/receives HTTP requests. When a component wishes to request data via HTTP, it invokes a static function in this class: Utility.fetchUrl(url, parameters, successHandler, errorHandler); This function calls another static function in a tracking component which monitors how long requests take, how many are sent, etc. The invocation looks very similar in the utility class:

Static functions do not allow the use of this since static members are bound to a class and are not inherited by that class' instances.

So, is there a way to create a function similar to $FUN_FrameStop, but static?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Using Static Variable To Create External Classes?

Feb 25, 2011

I've rarely used static variables or methods when creating external classes, but I have on occasion, and it's very useful when I need global access to a value. I've seen negative criticism on the use of the "static" keyword, but never understood why. Is there a right and wrong way of using it, or is this not true? I'd like to use it in a context similar to classes such as MouseEvent or TextFieldAutoSize, where there is a list of values globally accessible for identification purposes.

It allows better code readability, and also allows for easy customization in the future. The value of TextFieldAutoSize.NONE is "none", but as long as a programmer used the reference TextFieldAutoSize.NONE and not the string literal "none", Adobe could change the value of TextFieldAutoSize.NONE to be "hahahahaha" and everything would still work just dandy because (TextFieldAutoSize.NONE == TextFieldAutoSize.NONE) is still true even though ("none" == "hahahahaha") is not.

Is there any kind of negative impact on using static variables this way? Or even functions for that matter? I'd just like to clarify this before I go and build a large project around the idea this is perfectly okay.

ActionScript 3.0 :: How To Access Static Function From Runtime Classes

I load many classes in at runtime from external SWF's, accessing those classes is pretty simple, like so -

var model:Model3D = new modelClass();
However I've never tried to access static functions from a runtime class, and now I need to. How is it done? It seems like something that should be simple, but I haven't worked it out yet.

Flash :: ActionScript 3 Package Structure And Directory Structure

Jan 23, 2011

I seem to run into compile issues in Flash Builder when I import 3rd-party libraries at the wrong level in the directory structure. For example, sometimes I'll import a library one level too deep into its directory tree, and the package explorer ends up excluding the prefix root-level package, usually "com." or "net.". Even though the content of the source itself doesn't change, this will cause compile errors.

Thus: Is it a 1) convention or 2) language requirement that a class's package structure (e.g., "foo.bar.Class") must match its path location (e.g., foo/bar/Class.as)?
If it's a language requirement, why is it a requirement? Wouldn't that overdetermine the package structure, since it is already specified in the source code and quite happily consuming the first three to eight columns of each line? If it's not a language requirement, are my compile errors just a result of Flash Builder enforcing the convention?
