ActionScript 3.0 :: Put All Classes & Packages Inside A Com Folder & Then Website Name To Avoid Any Possible Naming Conflicts?
Feb 12, 2009
A lot of people have .com websites & put all their classes & packages inside a com folder & then their website name to avoid any possible naming conflicts when using other peoples classes - all very sensible. I have a .co.uk website however - is there an equivelant naming standard?

I am creating a library in AS3. Inside the library I make use of a bunch of classes/packages that need not be exposed to the end user of my lib. I want to only expose one of these classes.
I guess my questions are:
1) How are libraries commonly distributed in AS3?
2) Is there a .jar equivalent in AS3 that developers can include, but will only have access/knowledge of the classes I've declared as public?

Over the past years I have created many different .fla's of aircraft panels( ie. hydraulic panel, electrical panel, pressurization panel, etc.) Each .fla has only one panel in it. Each panel is a movieclip and made up of movieclips, graphics, etc. It has it's own code built in and the idea was to be able to copy the panel from the original .fla to a new .fla, that contained other panels, and together would become part of a training program for the company. No I wasn't smart enough to uniquely name each asset(switch, guage, light, etc.). I did avoid the default names like symbol1, symbol2, etc.
Now I need to take each of the panels from the individual .fla's and put them into one larger .fla to act as a single library for all the panels. This single .fla will become the master Library that I will link all future .fla's to. As you would guess I get the "One or more library items already exist in the document:" message when I try to copy and paste a panel(movieclip) into the new .fla.
Question:Is there an easy way to identify specifically which items are in conflict without having to do a direct comparison between each of the libraries?

This is not a technical question, just out of curiosity, why do we usually use the reverse domain naming convention for packages? i.e. com.yourname.yourpackage.class

Code:
if(_root.selmovie.hitTest(this._parent)){
_root.hit.text="it worked";
}
Why doesnt this work? I want to avoid naming all of the movieclips that this hittest is to apply to but this._parent isnt working...

I've worked wioth sub classes so I know how they work but I always work with everything all in one folder which can get messsy when there are a lot of classes to work through. So i started to make folders inside of my main folder but it's not working. Thought it may be to do with package names but as far as i know, for the whole "classes in separate folders" things that's how they are supposed to be.

I'm working on a project that imports custom classes (from external as files).
Each class is in it's own file (correctly named, located), and they import and compile fine.
I am building the text version using the Flash IDE (?), and am only using actionscript. The final version will be build using Flashdevelop.
Why does the compiler choke and give an error ("1037: Packages cannot be nested") when a package is coded in the main movie?
Isn't all as code in AS3 supposed to be contained in a package?
Here is the code that works - is this OK (in regards to package code)?
ActionScript Code:
import flash.display.*;
import flash.utils.*;
import com.company.affiliateWidget.DateExample;
[Code]....

I'm new to as3 and although I am able to build classes that don't error but also don't put anything on the stage. I have Starter_1.as file stored in a folder called com...this is the script for that file:
Code:
package com {
import flash.display.Sprite;
import flash.text.TextField;
public class Starter_1 extends Sprite {
private var tField:TextField;
public function Starter_1 () {
[Code] .....
From what I can see the problem is because the addChild(tField) is not referencing the stage in anyway because the script is in an external .as file and not on the timeline (good coding practice I read somewhere?) I use this on the timeline to try put the text field on the stage:
Code:
import com.Starter_1;
var f1:Starter_1 = new Starter_1();
How do I get this working?

Say if the structure of my game is set up like this:mainMenu- Classes inside the mainMenu package.instructions- MainMenuButtonClass.- Other classes inside the instructions package.game- MainMenuButtonClass.- Other classes inside the game package.The class MainMenuButtonClass is a button that, when clicked, directs the user to the MaiMenu and is identical in both the instructions package and the game package. Would it make sense just to save the same file in two locations or is there a better way to handle it.I'm not trying to access variables between the two classes. I'm not looking for any code either.

I have a small framework that I would like to put out there. I would love to export these classes as a single file. I know there is a SWC format, but there is not much recent information on how to export build this and I have a feeling this format might be outdated.

Before starting an class or code, you should put all your import statements..
Now I have flash application, which offers a search feature which relies on some pretty huge classes. The user is unlikely to use this feature. However, importing those classes anyway adds some pretty large kbs to my application. Is there a way to import these classes at runtime ONLY IF the user chooses to use this feature?

I'm trying to re-organize my classes into folders, currently they're all just in the same directory and it's very messy, so I've tested this out in one feature, being the bullets. So bullet.as is in the directory: [main source]/Classes/Turrets/Ammo
I so in the bullet.as file I have coded as follows:
Code:
package Classes.Turrets.Ammo {
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import flash.events.*
public class Bullet extends MovieClip {
Now this works, the bullet is fired on to the stage, however it behaves profoundly. For some reason it does not move at all or behave how it does when it is fired from the turret object, the bullets behave perfectly though when I just simply put them in the same directory as the source .fla. What can I do to easily re-organize my classes into folders without turning my objects into malfunctioning pieces of junk?

I have a Flash application that creates a sort of powerpoint presentation. All the 'slides' are stored in an XML files which is read and processed.
I'm trying to build the presentation using this XML file. At the moment, my main class has it's initial function main and a static function processXML main initiates my database class with a function called initDB. One of my issues is that initDB forgoes processing because it's dependant on an event listener. On completion of loading the XML files, the event listener initiates my static function on my main to create objects from this file.
The issue is that because the event listener continues the processing (after an indeterminate amount of time), the functions are no longer controlled by the main class.

I'm building Action Script project in Flash Builder. No flex, no third party libs. Pure actionscript - hierarchy of packages and classes. How do I include a plain external .as file, which is not a package or class, but just a set of statements?

OK, heres the thing. Since i cannot stop the code from continuing while i', waiting for amf to send the data, i remember to put a simple rectangle with alpha 0 in front of the stage while waiting for amf to arrive, then remove it.
Since the amf call is done from another class. I don't know how to do this.

I tried this one [URL] and it works. All I need to do now is to put it NOT in the timeline but inside a movieclip.
It works well when the button is on the timeline but when it's inside a movieclip, the packages can't even find it.
Any idea how the packages can find the button that is inside a movieclip?
Yes. I know the import and include commands. What I want to know is the directory (or Parent-Child) of AS3 Packages.

I have a problem with a button.It has 4 keyframe and a text field with the same instance name "myText".I use this button in a MC, and its instance name is "myBtn".I'm trying to change myText with actionscript in the MC without any results.Debugging it I find a text field insiede this button named "instance6", so i think there is some problem with instance name.
I trying with:
trace(myBtn.myText);
and it says "undefined"!
How can i correctly give instance name to this text field?Is there any way to find out the name of the instance of an object (the text field) knowing the instance name of its parent (the button)?

I currently use actionscript 2 and the package Tweener to perform many of my animations etc. Essentially its a class for tweening items with code.
So it all works fine when my folder structure is like this:
- Myflash.fla
- Myswf.swf
- Folder called caurina which holds all of the Tweener classes.
And in my fla file I import the Tweener classes by calling the following lines of actionscript 2:
import caurina.transitions.*;
import caurina.transitions.properties.ColorShortcuts;
import caurina.transitions.properties.DisplayShortcuts;
import caurina.transitions.properties.FilterShortcuts;

Right now in my 3D work folder I have a long list of demos and benchmarks all importing classes from my rumblesushi3D folder (package rumblesushi3D), which contains my entire 3D engine.
It's too long and cluttered, and now that I'm about to start work on my first game, I'd like to put all my publishable work into folders - such as demos, benchmarks, then a folder per game.
The files in these new folders now need to import classes from the same 3D engine that's now in the previous directory (rumblesushi3D).
The only alternative is to place a copy of my 3D engine folder in each folder, which I obviously don't want to do.
Say for example, you have a FLASH_WORK folder, in this folder there is a com folder with all the classes you use. All the document classes of your work are in FLASH_WORK, so the same folder depth as com obviously, and are not assigned a specific package.
If you put all these document classes into a folder called archive (created in FLASH_WORK) for example, is there any way to import the classes from the same com folder, now at a previous depth, without renaming ALL the classes in com to [URL]etc etc ?

So I'm building a drop down menu, and I'm done, almost, all I need is to link everything. The tutorial uses action script:
on(release){
getURL("http://www.something.com",_blank)
}
so it works for me when I enter actual website (ie coldplay.com) BUT I'm trying to link everything from my computer, this to be more specific: F:ColdplayWebFinalcoldplay.html
But it DOESN't WORK and I spent so much time building everything. Is there any way to make it work?
