Is it possible to make global functions, much in the same way you make a global variable, reachable from anywhere in the project?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Mimicing The Until Functions - Load Of Global Functions In One File?

Nov 4, 2009

I'm trying to find a way to have global functions in my as project, similar to how flash does with stuff like the util functions (describeType()...), where you can just call the function wherever you need it. For example:

[Code]...

So when I call Test(), it prints out "hello world" fine. My problem comes in that I can't change the name of the Test function, and I can't add any other functions without compiler errors. Is it possible to have a load of global functions in one file, or do I have to split them up into separate files like in the example? Also, I know that I can make a Global class and call static functions like Code: Global.doSomething() but I'd like to know if there's a way to do it as flash does it (describeType(), getDefinitionByName(), etc), or rather, how does flash do it?

Professional :: How To Use Global Functions - Hold Parameters

Feb 25, 2010

I have about 10 as3 coded buttons that use the same AS3 coded parameters to control the font and filters of their text fields. I'd like to create a global function to hold these parameters, and then just call the function within each button, and then also code each button to have it's own myText.text = "blahblah"; I can set up a global function no problem using an external as file, but am having trouble getting Flash to accept the parameters. For example, the following parameters work fine when used within the text fields of the buttons, but as so as I try to put them in an external global function, Flash doesn't like the parameters being external:

ActionScript 3.0 :: Global Functions Without Using Unique File

Apr 21, 2010

I'm tinkering around with things in AS3, and now that programming the reaction of buttons involves a bit more code, I'm trying to figure out how to kill a few redundancies.With the file I'm working with, at different points, using different objects, the user will click some specific thing to advance the main timeline one frame.Now, the way I've been doing it is, for each object, I have an addEventListener, which calls a function that only contains: MovieClip(root).nextFrame();So I've got, on every frame, unique functions that each require three additional lines of code -- I realize it's not much, and it's not a lazy thing, just an organizational, minimization thing.Since it's just that one thing, I don't see the point in making an entire AS file, so I didn't know if there was a way to make a function that could be called from any frame, from any object, rather than just have them local.

ActionScript 3 :: Conflicting Scope - Global Functions And Class Methods Of Same Name

Jul 6, 2011

My question deals directly with ActionScript 3, although it could possibly appear in other languages. Consider the global trace function found in AS3. Calling the method requires no imports and is globally available from all classes.
class A {
public function A() {
trace("Hello, A!"); // Hello, A!
}}

Now, what if I create my own class method of the same name? In AS3, if I have a class method trace and then make a call to trace elsewhere in my class, the call is made to the class method over the global function. Essentially, I've blocked my ability to call the global trace method.
class B {
public function B() {
trace("Hello, B!"); // no output
} public function trace(s:String):void {
// do something else.
}}

Now, I know the obvious answer is to say, "don't create a class method called trace." But what if I'm unaware of the existence of the global trace function? Or what if I have a desire to "override" or "block" the global function? Is doing so bad programming? Or is this just another example of how AS3 is a poor object oriented language?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Import Vs Include - Basic Functions To Be In BasicFunctions.as And The Make A Library For More Specific Functions

Jun 6, 2010

I've got a project thats getting a bit big, so Im taking the actionscript out into separate as files. I want all the basic functions to be in BasicFunctions.as and the make a library for more specific functions. I find that a lot of people use the import statement but I cant get that to work with a simple Hello World trace, yet the include statement works fine (see attached). I understand that import/include work differently, but which is the better method? If import, then is that heavier to work with. Any rate, what's the best way to organise code when it gets to the 1000+ lines?

I'm making this thread because I have searched in google for how to make a "global library". I'm sure this is not what it's called but i couldnt think of another way to search. If I start a new project and I want to bring in objects from other projects should I be going to "open external library"? I imagine that an external library is global. While i'm waiting for replies i'll look up how to make an external library.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Make Kind Of Global TextFormat?

Jul 18, 2003

as u probably know TextFormat has no global style like FStyleFormat so i thought i could make one?

1. idea) i could wrap createTextField() in some fns which then assigns automaticly some TextField-propertys and sets setTextFormat.
THE PROBLEM with that is that not all of my TextFields are generated via script, some r created by authoring-time.

2. idea) is to change the prototype."someproperty" of the TextField,THE PROBLEM TextField is not created via standard "new" constructor
so something like TextField.prototype.embedFonts=true; DOES NOT WORK as well.

3. idea) i could simply traverse all instances on stage and ask if the instanz is TextFeld and then assgin some fns which makes the formating.THE PROBLEM i dont know how to do that?

couse if i ask
trace(typeof t_txt.__proto__);
it just givs "object" not TextField or so
---------------------------------------------
does anybody knows how to make kind of global TextFormat for createTextField()-generated as well as for authoring-time generated TextFields?

In InDesign or Illustrator, if I want to change every red object to blue, I can go into the color list, edit the red color to the blue values, and every instance of red in the document reflects the edit. ActionScript 3.0 :: Make Functions Available Only If Specific SWF Loads?

Jun 21, 2011

I'm creating a Flash file which pulls in external SWFs onto a container. The main SWF which has the container clip is called Main.swf then we have external swf's.

So basically, we have Main.swf, English.swf, French.swf, More.swf

More.swf has a load of buttons on it (contact.swf, about,swf etc etc)

To make things neater, I wanted to put all of my button code in the Main.swf, and I've got it sorted so that English.swf, French.swf and More.swf load correctly into holder_MC which is on Main.swf

Now, to get the buttons working, I can either have the code situated in More.swf (in which case, can I change the contents of holder_MC which is located in Main.swf from within More.swf? If so, how?)

Or, I can have an event listener to say that when Main.swf is loaded, create these functions to link to contact.swf, about,swf etc etc)

If I had something like that ^ what could I add to func to distinguish between whether it is being called by lolz0, lolz1, or lolz2? I was thinking whether there was something like .name I could use, but I couldn't come up with anything.

Actionscript :: Make FailFrom A "global" Variable?

onClipEvent (load) {

_root.gotoAndStop("fail");
failFrom = levelNum;

Why doesn't it work?...The second problem lies in the failFrom variable:

function failwhale(levelNum) {

How do I make failFrom a "global" variable in that it can be accessed anywhere (from actionscript in frames and even movieclips)...Right now, when I try to trace failFrom in a different frame, it is "undefined".
