ActionScript 2.0 :: Shared Object / Saving And Retrieving Arrays?
Feb 14, 2007
I have used SO's to save and retrieve simple variables successfully, but I am a problem saving and retreiving array data in the following example: [URL] A user selects several options using radio buttons. All that happens is that the SO should store in memory which buttons the user clicked on. If run through flash with the output window, you can see that when the save button is clicked, the data is saved. But when you load the activity a second time, the array data that was stored in the SO only gets recalled as 'undefined'.

var user_so:SharedObject = SharedObject.getLocal("nameOfTheCookie");

(I see this same type of question was posted almost three years ago with no resolution, does anyone have a solution now? am trying to save a clone of a custom object (contains arrays and other custom objects as properties) to a Shared Object.Basically I have a menu system that created this program, it's running and at any point I want the user to be able to save it so he can go back to that exact point at a later date. Here is what I do so far:1. Pause the program2. The menu saves the variable that references the running program using a bytearray to a shared object3. A a later time, to load the program I pull the data from the shared object and save it to a variable, which I then treat like the original programHere is my code to save the data:
Code:
var byteArrayCloner:ByteArray = new ByteArray();
byteArrayCloner.writeObject(myProgram);

I'm trying to save an object to a shared object, the thing is that while i run it the first time it works perfectly, but as soon as the swf is closed and re-opened my object just disappears.If I'm not wrong this is because it's a custom class instance and the .data saves a reference to the object instead of the object which is deleted as soon as the program closes.My question is:I've tried saving each var in a different data.[something], having to save five variables might not be bad but what about twenty or more.

I know the basics of shared objects but I never really got into it I was wondering if there is a way that I could save and load movieclips that I attach to the stage(Each has its own name such as clip_1,clip_2,etc) including the location(_x,_y,rot) and have it duplicate them all over again and move them to the same location as before (I'm using Actionscript 2, by the way)

I am creating a computer game with a save game function which outputs the contents of an array to a shared object, so that users don't loose their place.However, I wish for this to work with multiple users, and realise that to do this I need a new seperate "folder" within the shared object being created for each new users data array.I know it must be something like....
// Define the shared object using a "sublevel" for each users data array...
_root.savegame.sublevel = sharedobject.getLocal("savegame"; "/");
// somehow dynamically change "sublevel" to the contents of the var "currentUser" as defined when the user logs in when the game loads up.
OR...
//Define the shared object but using a variable title for the actual SO...
_root.savegame = sharedobject.getLocal("savegame_currentUser", "/");
//with that "currentUser" being dynamically substituted for the contents of the var "currentUser" which is defined when the User logs in when the game loads up.

I am creating an application in Flash CS4 that will load data from an XML file and add a movieClip for each item to the stage. Each movie clip contains a NumericStepper component and Input text field.
The user needs to be able to change the fields and update the XML file for the event.CHANGE event.
The XML file needs to be formed like this. I need to be able to navigate between sections and load the data for each one.
<sections>
<section>
<data>
[Code].....
I just need a push in the right direction. I using the Object Oriented Programming methods with a Document class and movieClip classes to control my application. I have been spinning my tires creating several crippled versions.

How do i save an array of objects, like this: [{n:1,bb:4},{n:2,bb:4,r:1},{n:6,bb:7},...] to a database? I was thinking i would have to convert it to string, but if i do that, when i retrieve it from the database, how am i going to use it?
EDIT: forgot to mention that the objects can contain an array of objects as well, but there won't be any more arrays beyond that point.
[{n:1,bb:4},{n:2,bb:4,r:1},{n:6,bb:7},{arr:[{a:11,b:2},{a:11,b:2},...],r:1},...]

I created a very simple experiment to attempt to access the same shared object in Flash Player and AIR.
A Flash SWF creates a local shared object.
A AIR application (being tested from CS3 or installed) opens the same shared object.
The data does not persist. Is this theoretically possible?

I am trying to make a to-do list application. I would like it to save each time I close. So I researched shared objects, and somehow cannot get it to work. I hold all my "items" in an array, then copy that array to a shared object. Here is the code used to copy the array: At the top. I put the array in a Global class, just ignore the GlobalVars.vars. junk. It's not really necessary, but it definitely works everywhere. ListItem is a class I made that works fine by itself.
Code:
var listCookie:SharedObject;
listCookie=SharedObject.getLocal("lkjasdf");
if(!listCookie.data.itemArray) {
listCookie.data.itemArray=new Array();
} for(var i in listCookie.data.itemArray)
[Code] .....
When this function is called, it equates the two arrays fine. I trace them both afterwards, and they have the same items in there. But when I close the .swf and reopen it, the saved array is full of undefined references. It has the same length, just nullifies everything it was supposed to have.

I'm basically loading an XML file to assign instances of a movie clip a distinct value, which it uses to modify its height. So, I'm looping through the xml and instantiating my class Object each time (Rect) and then placing that Object into an array:
Code:
function loadXML(loaded){
if(loaded){
var boxArray:Array;
xmlNode = this.firstChild;
[code]....
the trace here always comes up undefined. "listPosition" in this bit is an Rect parameter, defined in the previous bit of code as "i", so I can keep track of the order of the stack.I've found one or two examples of putting objects into an array and getting them back out, but it doesn't seem to work with this, maybe because I'm using a class. I don't know.Could this be an area where I need to use the array access brackets, like around the movie clip the object is loaded into. I've tried everything I can think of -- referencing back to the movieclip, adding extra objectRef type parameters... nothing has worked yet.

I'm using a loader for people to use to upload their own images for a background, and I want it to remember the image the next time they come to the page, so is there any way to save the loader data in a shared object? I haven't tried just using something like
Code:
sharedObject.data.dataName=loader
because I assume it doesn't work that way.

I'm trying to retrieve values that are embedded in the object tag on the HTML page. Is this possible? I've been trying to find how to do this, but all hits point out to how to embed flash in HTML and rarely do I find on which tells me how to retrieve data from HTML into flash.
Example:
Code:
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />
<title>Untitled Document</title>
[Code].....
How can I simply trace the value in flash??? Just for now, all I want to know is if I make a dynamic text box in flash, can it display the name of the .swf by reading the param?

I have an object which is assigned a number of properties:
var project_array:Array = [];
var slideObject:Object = {
project_title : myXML.projects.project[i].title.toUpperCase(),
[Code].....
but I'm not quite sure where to place this. If I place it outside of the object constructor, I get "term is undefined", I guess because it doesn't know what project_clips_array is - but if I declare project_clips_array in the constructor, it appears to need to be defined, i.e. I can't create a blank property. But I can't place it in the constructor either, because it doesn't seem to allow me to run a function within an object constructor. What is the proper syntax or arrangement of code for executing this function to get the array within the object?

I was thinking if there was a way to remove the shared object pop up from popping up lol?Its because Im making a game where when the player saves the pop up comes up over a 100 times and it's really frustrating, so I was thinking if you could remove the pop up entirely by using actionscript?I've found a script that shows the popup:System.showSettings(1);So is there a way to reverse this script? like System.hideSettings(1); ?

I have a client who has a video that is to only play once when a user visits. So I created a shared object to create a param that the video has been played. It works perfect locally and on my live test site. However when the client posts it on his ning website in the header it doesn't work. The strange thing is that live and locally on my server you can see the shared object and it's size through the advanced tab in Flash's privacy settings.

I have a gane that uses shared object and keeps note of highscores and users names. So - if that is possible then I can set up teaching courses on standalone pcs can't I? ie: Databses I have in access can go in XML and the recording of position in course and results of tests can also be recorded using Shared object.Is that a good way of going about things OR should the whole thing go over to AIR and its sqlite system?

I have 2 ways of accessing info in my course files (SWFs): text-only and audio playback. I'd like to use shared object to store the user preference so it remembers the setting when navigating between screens. It stores info file but each file creates its own shared object.
for example:
<path to the swf>page1.swfcoursename.sol
<path to the swf>page2.swfcoursename.sol
<path to the swf>page3.swfcoursename.sol
Since it writes and reads the SOL file of its own folder, the user setting isn't remembered when switching pages.
