ActionScript 3.0 :: Meta Data And Loading Methods?

Aug 22, 2009

I'd like to be able to resize the stage according to the size (and aspect ratio) of the video - to do this so far I've been trying by using an external function call to javascript:

Code:
function onMetaData(info:Object):void {
objInfo = info;
ExternalInterface.call("videoPlayer.resizeVid", info.width, info.height, mcVideoControls.height);
tmrDisplay.start();
}

As you can see it happens on meta load, and in order to do that I have to attach the net stream, start playing the video to load the meta data, and then pause it:

Code:
ncConnection = new NetConnection();
ncConnection.addEventListener(NetStatusEvent.NET_STATUS, netStatusHandler);
ncConnection.connect(null);

[code].....

What's happening is the player loads up at it's original size, and then with a jolt is resized as required, but responsiveness and load time of the video is very bad and hangs the browser quite easily...

1) Is there some sort of threaded pre-load I can use so that the video doesn't load with such a jolt and the responsiveness of the player isn't compromised

2) is there a way of obtaining the meta data of the video without loading it fully?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Load Data From CSV; Remove White Space From Split

Mar 12, 2012

I'm attempting to load into an array data from an external .csv file. No problem here.

I load into a first array all of the data and split the data at the end of each line ("
").

Then, I place into a new array each line that was split.

The problem is that the last element in this new line comes with an invisible space such that when I do a trace they come out as follows:

AAAA

BBBB

CCCC

instead of

AAAA
BBBB
CCCC

This is a problem because I later on do a switch check for 'AAAA', 'BBBB' or 'CCCC' and I think it doesn't recognize any because of the space.

Loading Several MovieClips Into Separate Variables?

My movieclips can all be called something simple like mc1, mc2, mc3, mc4 etc to make things easier.These need to be referenced in to an array mcContainer[.....] or as mcContainer1, mcContainer2........ so that they can be called easily.I just need to know the simplest way to do this and how i reference them, I have tried several ways like ["mc"+i] etc and nothing seems to work.

variable1 = [135.06, 135.35]
variable2 = [135.91, 135.43]

ActionScript 3.0 :: Load Data From Different Variables - The New Variables Come Back As Undefined?

Jun 15, 2010

I'm writing code that takes data from mysql that's processed by a PHP script. It's actually a bit bizarre, at least to me. Anyway, here's some basic AS3 code that's moving toward what I want to do:

var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
var urlRequest:URLRequest=new URLRequest("receive.php");
urlRequest.method=URLRequestMethod.GET;[code]....

For some reason, the statement "trace(evt.target.data);" produces a whole pile of garbled text before the actual stuff that it's supposed to show Because of problem #1, I've had to include a throwaway variable at the beginning, otherwise the first variable I try to pass into AS3 comes back as undefined. This causes errors when I run my flash movie in the IDE, but when I run it from the browser it doesn't seem to have any effect.But this is the strangest thing of all whenever I make any changes to the database (and subsequently try to load data from different variables), the new variables come back as undefined. For example, let's say that I add another entry to the database, and decide to load students 2, 3, and 4 instead of 1, 2, and 3. When I do that, any new data I've added comes back as undefined, even though when I view the PHP output in my browser, it looks just fine.

And now for the REALLY bizarre part: I'll copy that output, paste it into my PHP script as an echo statement, comment everything else out, and my flash movie runs fine. Even though the output from the PHP script is exactly the same, it gives me errors.

ActionScript 3.0 :: URLLoader Load Data In A Separate Thread?

Jul 14, 2009

I understand the Flash and AS3 is single-threaded, at least at the user level. I would like to understand how asynchronous data loading is handled by the Flash player.

For instance, if I run CPU-intensive code that runs beyond the normal frame (lets say it runs on ENTER_FRAME, and consumes 1/4 per call).  Does this leave any CPU cycles to load data from a URLLoader?

If http loading is truly synchronous, right down to handling the TCP/IP stack, one would get horrible performance. In Windows programming, I can do http access asynchronously (in which case the Windows libraries are doing either input on a separate thread, or doing hardware-level interrupts to handle the data -- I provide an asynchronous callback that may be on its own thread).  Or, I can do synchronous download, in which case there will be hardware buffering, but my application is actively waiting for each buffer of data to be delivered by the hardware/OS combination.

URLLoader is asynchronous, but what does that mean?  Does it mean that I can run the CPU and still download data?  Or, will my download speed slow to a crawl if my Flash application is under heavy CPU load? Understanding how this works will help me design my product better, which both uses a lot of CPU, and downloads a lot of data (to the bandwidth limit of the network, if possible).

AS3 :: Flash - Separate The Data And The Game Rules In A Model?

Dec 17, 2010

I feel like MVC misses a letter to describe the situation in a game. The model to me seems to consist of two distinct parts:

A group of vars that describe the current game state (these will have setters that send out events on change, and getters so that the view can access what changed)
The rules of the game that determine what happens once a certain input (i.e. shoot();) has been received by the controller (these will update the group of vars as deemed appropriate)

The view will exclusively be reading from 1 while the controller will be exclusively communicating with 2. This is why I make the distinction and want to divide them up into class1 and class2.

My questions:

I am unsure if I should be making this distinction, since I haven't seen it anywhere. If I should; should I make two separate classes, or should I extend class1 with class2? Finally, I am having trouble making sure that only class2 (and not the view) can change the variables in class1 (while still being able to send out an event when a value changes).

ActionScript 3.0 :: Assign 5 Separate Dynamic Text Fields To 5 Separate Buttons?

Apr 18, 2010

What I need to do is assign 5 separate dynamic text fields to 5 seperate buttons and at the same time to those same five buttons i would like to add 5 images that i would  be able to change merely by swapping out the images in the file theyre in on the server.I would also like to get a nice transition between the images...ALSO i want to dynamically load the images for the buttons that will be used for switching from picture to picture(which im thinking i will be able to do after i know the how to do point the aforementioned things.)

Through tutorials I've found around the net I've been able to get most of the parts together... but i get lost because what they show you for AS2 they don't for AS3 and vice versa, at least that ive seen.so... I guess my question is... would i need to set up 5 seperate dynamic text fields on the stage and then set each one of them to one of the corresponding button. If so what AS code would i need to use to do so.  And if not what would i need to do?

The other part of the question would be I know about the UILoader... would i be able to use it as my buttons and images, if so would i need 5 seperate ui loaders for both the Thumbnail buttons and the images or is there a way that would be better to do it?  and once i do that would i do the transitions using frames and tweens like with AS2?

However if I try and do this on any of my projects i've been working on for a while when I create a new blank keyframe in the actions layer and try to add actions to it, I get sent straight back to my first actions keyframe and not a nice blank page.
