View 5 Repliesam setting up a webpage with Flash MX. On the homepage I have a dynamic text box with links to the left (currently the links are just typed words). We want it to setup so that when a user clicks a link (such as "HOME") it will access text from a .txt file and load it into the dynamic text box. We want all of the links ("HOME", "PERSONNEL", "RECRUITS", "CONTACT US") to load their text from a seperate .txt file into that same dynamic text box.

The setup is a parent Flash file, that has called a child Flash, and placed it in a movieClip.
I can send a variable using Javascript to the parent Flash file, but not directly to the child Flash file. Is there a way that I can access the child Flash file directly with Javascript?
Or do I need to send the variable to the parent Flash file, and then have the parent send the variable to the child Flash file? Is there a sort of dot notation that I can use with Javascript to get to the child Flash file without first accessing the parent, when the child is added to the parent using the loadClip function in flash?

I need to make a flash applet that automatically grabs a specific file on a user's system (iTunes XML file) and auto uploads it to my server. So far I have only been able to accomplish this with a user selecting the file, how to upload a specific file without the user having to go and find it.

This is obviously a security sandbox thing.Now I tried adding crossdomain.xml to the root and it still makes the same error. I know somehow I need to add to my project use-network=false, but i cant for the life of me work out where the flex compiler additional arguments area is. I want to save and access my FLVs locally, but I can't seem to get it to work. I don't know if it is a matter of the correct path syntax, I'm also not sure what an Air app sees as a relative path. I created a TLF Text with the Flash IDE in the main document.I've assigned it an instance name with the IDE.When I try to access the text with Actionscript I cannot access the text field.Of course if I transform in the IDE the text in classic dynamic text it works as expected.

I have an application created in Flash Builder 4 that loads SWFs of flash files and I want to access movie clips within these flash files. I can access top level movie clips using:

this._graphics[assetName].addChild(this._customText);
However when I want to access nested movie clips I am unsuccessful, I have tried:
var assetName:String = "example_mc";
var assetName2:String = "example2_mc";
this._graphics[assetName][assetName2].addChild(this._customText);
and I have tried:
MovieClip(DisplayObjectContainer(this._graphics.getChildByName(assetName)).getChildByName(assetName2)).addChild(this._customText);
In addition I tried variants of the square brackets and "getChildByName" but still no success.All moviclips are instantiated in frame 1 of the Flash files?
Edit :I forgot to tweak my error handling so an error would be shown, plus all my tests where not showing text, late afternoon on a Mon is not my brightest hour! ;) I worked it out in the end, the solution was either (as above):
MovieClip(DisplayObjectContainer(this._graphics.getChildByName(assetName)).getChildByName(assetName2)).addChild(this._customText);
Or:
MovieClip(DisplayObjectContainer(this._graphics.getChildByName(assetName))[assetName2]).addChild(this._customText);

View 1 Repliesi'm trying to access an aspx file which is online. it's suppose to give me an xml data that i will parse and display inside of flash... the wierd thing is this: using any variation of code (using xml, or loadvars) the file loads the xml file and works great from WITHIN the flash authoring environment (when using "test movie") BUT it doesn't work when i run the swf file from its local directory (explorer) or from within a browser. what and why is this?

However, since I'm using FlashDevelop with the Flex 4 SDK, I have no idea how to access these instances in code. can anyone explain when I goto publish my flash file certain graphics and text are disappearing from the swf file?
For instance just some static text and also a graphic i've copied three times.. two show up but the third doesn't? really annoying help!
I turn to you for help, dear sweet Kirupa Forumites. First, let me explain the problem: I have a flash file reading an external text file for the content. Everything works perfectly for nearly everyone - you click a menu button, and the content text comes up fine. However, a couple of people have found that the text shows up as "undefined". I have checked the player versions of the people where it doesn't work, and it is the same as for those where it does work, so that ain't the problem.
I don't understand why it works perfectly for nearly everyone, but a small number of people have this "undefined" text problem. It seems to be a problem with loading the external text file, but I don't know why. I have a main flash movie, and load the text in the first frame, using the following:

I then have a couple of dynamic text boxes in the main movie - one called ErrorText (for displaying an error message to the user) and one called ContentText (for displaying the content). I use an external menu swf which jumps to a specific frame in the main movie, depending on which button is clicked. Actionscript on the main movie frame for the first button does the following, with the other frames similarly configured:
ContentText.htmlText = my_content.content1;
stop();
My external text file is properly configured (content1=blah blah&content2=other blah blah) etc.
Does anyone have any advice on how I can solve this particular weird problem??

Hopefully, this information can then be exported into an external file which will allow the user to work on and edit at a later stage. It needs to be a separate editable document. Is this possible? I have what seems to be a simple task, yet I cannot seem to figure it out. I am busy creating a project in ActionScript 3, and while I am fairly fluent in ActionScript 2, I am being stumped a bit here.
I have a simple dynamic text field inside a button object. This text field has the name of txt_title. I have attached event handlers to change the alpha of the buttons when they are hovered over, however I also want to change the value of the text field within the button, when hovered over. So I have a movie clip associated with an external class in the linkage dialog. I put that movie clip on the stage. I have another external class that contains some code (not for the movie clip but for the stage). When I access the custom properties of the class in the actual flash file (not the external code) everything works fine.For example.myMovieClip.explodeTheCode = true;works in the main movie. However, it doesn't work in the external flash file when I have a reference to that movie clip.myRefToCustomMovieclip.explodeTheCode = true fails!It throws an error. In java, I'd just import the custom class the movie clip is linked to and then I can call all the extra custom methods on the movie clip in the external class I want. However, this does nothing. I still can't access any properties.So my question is, how do I access the custom features of a movie clip (that is linked to a custom class) from an external code file. It works in the movie, but not in the external source code.

I've used Authowrware previously and it was quite easy to create a large string of data (a comma separated list) and export that to a text file (and create the text file if it didn't already exist). I could then easily append additional rows of data (records) to the text file. We want to build a questionnaire that will store the data locally on the computer in a text file. Each record may have a few hundred data points in a comma separated list.
