ActionScript 3.0 :: CPU Intensive Animation - Get These Huge Animations To Run In The Background Smoothly?
Jan 24, 2009
So I'm building a music site for a client, he's got a record theme so I thought it would be cool to build the site to look like a big turn table with all the content on the record.the record is designed to spin (not as disorienting as you'd think, just the grooves spin)...but the record image, which I did in Photoshop, is huge.
It was just slowing things down to a near crawl in browser. So I split the record image into four pieces and then mirrored them to get the full piece of the pie. It worked, but it's still running slightly slow. I do have a couple of blending options set to act as lights over the record...I tried deleting them to see if it would run faster, it's still jumpy. When the record is not moving(there's a button to turn it off) everything runs smoothly. The entire move is about 300k in file size and the record is being animated via actionscript.How do some of these bigger sites get these HUGE animations to run in the background so smoothly?

I'm creating an animated background/flash animation, in short I have several tweened pieces all moving/swinging around and I want them all to loop at the end of their individual loops. Each piece is on its own layer) I have been using gotoAndPlay(2); (I'm using a preloader so frame 2 is the start). The problem is (If I'm correct here) is the first layer to reach the end runs the "go to and play" resetting everything!. I want each layer to act independantly. Is there a different version of gotoAndPlay(2); that will work or am I looking at things like nested animations/importing individual fla's ect (all of which goes over my head).

To try to avoid lag in the main animations (few ones, 5 I think), instead of having all the contents load as external movie clips in a movie clip called contentsMC (for instance), I used that contentsMC clip to contain them all, in several frames. There's no great problem in having all in one, since the contents are mainly text. The contentsMC shows up in a masked area inside the main movie clip.
I also have a transition effect, under that masked area.
When I press a button, it uses the command loadContent = #; And sets the transition effect movieclip play ( transitionMC.gotoAndPlay(1); ).
At the mid point of that transition effect (when it covers the actual content), it has the if conditions required to display what was asked.
if (loadContent == 1) {
_parent.contentsMC.gotoAndStop(1);
if (loadContent == 2) {
_parent.conteudos.gotoAndStop(2);
and so on.
However, when the transition effect is ocurring, all the animations in the main page become really slow, until it ends. Also, if I use anything inside the contentsMC, such as a scroll bar, the same lag occurs. That lag happens both with the always running animations (they are 5, I think) and with any other animation triggered during that, for instance by the onRollover effect of a movieclip.
To try to reduce that, I had set the framerate to higher values. First I set it to 50, then 60, and now it's currently at 90 (I only set it to 90 as it displays quite slower on the browser)

How do I build a scrollbar that listens when certain text is at some Y position and triggers certain animations(MovieClips to play or stop)? I was using this code but is not so responsive sometimes works and sometimes no.
import com.tis.utils.components.Scrollbar;
var s2Bar:Scrollbar = new Scrollbar(aboutMC.about);
s2Bar.name = "ScrollBarMc";

Working on a 'video heavy' Flash site that has an intro video. While the intro video is playing, assets(images,flv files) should be loaded in the background. The problem is that, while the assets are loading, the intro video play gets jittery. What can I do to make the video playing smoothly while still loading assets? It might be the single threaded nature of actionscript, not sure. After using @Demian Brecht suggested method, I noticed that the culprit might be Memory allocation. As the FLVs load the memory usage goes up by ~266MB and while the videos are written to memory, the framerate drops to 1FPS.

For the current site I'm working on, I need to display an intro video while other ssets(mostly flv files)load in the background.The issue is the framerate drops from ~30 to about ~1 because of the loading. When the videos loadinto memory, it grows by about 266MB~ and until it's 'written' the framerate drops.Is there any workaround/solution that will allow me to play an intro video while the assets load intomemory ?

[URL]. Link to my problem .swf file. I am trying to get the bullet to fly in smoothly and ease to a stop. Also there appears to be some audio trying to play, but I have no audio in the library, or the stage! I can't get this animation to play smoothly at all. This was originally exported from an After Effects project (CS4) and there are only 8 layers - 1 for the bullet, 4 for button text, 1 of the main title, 1 of the dude standing (I'm hopefully going to have the title fly in from behind him) 1 of the bg and other text together. Why this animation won't play right? (I'm using Flash CS4 to do this).

Im making a preloader for a game, which is meant to do this: [URL] But for some reason as soon as i add a progress bar to it, The animation freezes when it appears.
It should look like this:[URL]
It does this: [URL]
Ive tried multiple methods to attempt to fix it, but have failed.
If you require the .fla, i can only compile it with cs5, so older versions wont be supported.

I have 2 Flash animations, both tweened and working as intended, and now I'd like to make a third flash animation which will be composed of the other 2 animations playing after each other (with a few empty frames in between). How I do this? I tried just adding them to the time line and giving enough frames, but that doesn't do the trick.

I recently got back into animating and I need some help with my latest project. I have a number of different animations that I would like to be played on the inside of a tv, however I would like for these animations to play at certain times. For example, at 9:00 pm (real time) the tv displays the animation of the character sleeping. I'm not sure how to do this, and I'm not sure if I need an internal clock.

I've made a flash file which contains the following:backgroundMC (consist of vector art made in illustrator and imported)holderMC (loads an external swf which contains my game)I want the background to scale when the Stage get resized so I used the following code as everyone else does:
ActionScript Code:
Stage.scaleMode = "noScale";
Stage.align = "LT";[code]....
Then if I resize my window the backgroundMC doesn't, because the listener isn't active anymore... Is there a way to resolve this? .I want my Stage to resize the backgroundMC, but without causing my game.swf (which is dynamicly loaded) to run slow...

I just created my first animation of a plant "growing up", following the tutorial here: http:[url]..... It worked wonders: I basically drew a few lines, transformed it to symbol, created a new mask and script layer, and just used a brush to cover a part of the image on every frame in order to give the illusion of appearance. However, I don't need a background, I just need to cut the animation and make it an independent SWF.

Lately I have been trying to animate the water surface giving it more natural look by use of Perlin noise. But it seems it is very CPU intensive operation. And if I use it along with other animations on the stage which involve lot of movements then it become really difficult for the machine to render the entire scene.

I want to make an interactive flash file, and the way I want to have it layed out is that a steady animation will play in one layer, while being able to jump around in frames with events such as a mouseover.I'm going to give a generic example, this isn't what I'm going to do, but it gets the point across.Theres a house and a tree. The leaves on the tree are falling, and upon mouseover of the house door, the door will open. Yet the leaves will remain falling (without skipping frames in the animation) while the door is still opening.How do you do this without using a goToAndPlay(x) or such that jumps the whole animation?

I'm trying to find out if there is a way to get an animation to stream in the background and not reset or change when there is a frame jump or scene change. I just want it to become the permanent background.Kind of the way a sound can be set to loop and stream non-stop so long as you don't go back to the frame in which the sound started.

I have an artist I'm paying to do animation art for me. I need PNGs for each frame in the animation but she is most comfortable doing her animations in Flash. It sounds like getting the frames for me will be difficult for her. She was able to do the still art we needed and give us that as a frame, but for some reason the animation is different? Keep in mind we need PNGs with full transparency support in the background. We can't be clipping these frames out by hand.

I found a tutorial online that showed me how to create a looping background animation (falling leaves) but the code is in Actionscript 2.0. I am in the process of trying to covert the code to Actionscript 3.0 but there are still a few things I'm having trouble with (i.e. setRGB, duplicateMovieClip, etc).
Code:
leafNumber = 30;
for (i=0;
i<leafNumber; i++) {
newLeaf = leaf.duplicateMovieClip("leaf"+i, i);
newLeaf.x = Math.random()*Stage.width;

I need to learn how feasible it is to automatically assemble Flash animations which take a background image, an animation (or a set of vector drawings that can be turned into an animation) and a sound file from a set of files. In other words, assume that I have the following set of files:
3 background images (let's assume JPG)
3 animations (no sound, no static background)
100 sound files (let's assume MP3)
So if I want to code something like:
for i 1 to 3
for k 1 to 3
take animation i
take background image k
for j 1 to 100
take sound_file j
resulting_swf = assemble (animation[i], background[i], sound_file[j])
save(resulting_swf)
Which will produce 900 Flash animations with different combinations of sound and background, what is the starting point? Are there some libraries (in Python, Perl, PHP, etc.) with good documentation and examples to develop something like that, some program that I can run from the command line?

I currently have 6 scenes in my current movie. It's going to be an online portfolio and each page is a section of the portfolio. However, I have an animated background (400 frames long) that I want to be played throughout the entire site. Of course, when I try and do this the animation resets every time the scene changes. The best I could do so far is to have it running on every page this way but like i said, it resets every time the scene changes. Is it possible to set this background to run smoothly through the portfolio without resetting?

I am using Bulkloader [URL] to load in a succession of 10 images whilst the main elements of my site have already been preloaded. It is required that these images are not loaded within the preloader as they are large in size and this will increase the wait to an unacceptable level. They are not added to the display list upon succesful load but instead are added at a later time.
The problem I am having is that the menu navigation of the site is slowed down considerably and looks sluggish if the user navigates around whilst the images are being loaded in the background. Once loading stops everything is fluid and smooth. The animations are being carried out using a combination of timeline and Tweener.
Firstly, does anyone know if this is normal behaviour? I don't see why something being loaded should interfere with something moving on the screen, they are doing completely different tasks so I am a bit puzzled as to why they seem to clash.
Secondly, can anyone suggest a feasible workaround? I have been experimenting with using BulkLoader's pauseAll and resumeAll methods and have had some success by detecting mouse events and pausing/resuming as and when required, but it is proving a lot more complicated than I feel it should be, especially as I don't think loading should be affecting animation in the first place.
I have tried loading the images in one-by-one as I thought having too many connections open (apparently bulkloader can open multiple connections for faster loading) may cause some memory issue or suchlike, but that made no difference, everything is still choppy and sluggish whilst the background loader is running.

i have a swf with several processor intensive subroutines within a main init() routine at start up (about a 5 secs startup wait). it needs a preloader not due to asset loads but to the processor intensive routines.i'm trying to create a preloader that will display progress as the routines complete but when i try to write text to text field as each subroutine completes either the textField.text is not updated or the text field display is not updated after each subroutine finishes.this prevents me from tracking the progress of the start up.
is there a way to force an update to the display list in the middle of a processor intensive routine? i believe flash is supposed to update after each frame but i'm not seeing this.also, the text field i'm displaying *before* this processor intensive routine *does* display when running locally but *does not* display before the routine when running online.not sure why.

I have a method, which connects to a HTTP server and requests via XMLRPC, a list of data structures and then for each data structure gets a list of attributes and the values of those attributes. It's implemented using nested for each loops.
The problem is that it's loading a lot of data all at once, and consuming a massive amount of CPU (over 100%) reading responses from the server and parsing the XML.
If I were writing the program in C, I'd insert a usleep() at the end of the loop, to wait before trying to load more data and reduce CPU usage. What would the equivalent be in Flex?

I'm not certain that there's a set answer to that question, so let me give you a more specific example: In my current code, I can solve a problem one of two easy ways: either by using three algebraic functions (one square root and two squares) or by using three trigonometric functions (one atan2, one cos, and one sin). And then I potentially repeat the code for several hundred iterations.
I'm curious if one set of functions is any more efficient than the other, if they're fairly similar, or if there may be a set of higher-order functions I'm missing that can do these kinds of computations much more easily.(For some more specifics, if you're interested: given a line between any two points, I want to find a new point along that line that's a set distance from one of the other two points.)
