ActionScript 3.0 :: Creating Custom Touch Event Handler Class

I have a problem that seems easy enough to solve but I'm trying to do it with reusable code, which involves doing something I don't understand yet. I've googled this endlessly and read dozens of articles and I'm still just as lost as when I started. I'm hoping a live human being can help me make sense of it.
I have a movie clip on stage. When this movie clip is pressed, I want it to play a certain frame of another movie clip for as long as it's being touched. (It's a map of the US, that will display each state name as it is pressed.) I COULD write 50 different functions, each to call a different frame of the displayName movie, or I could write my own custom event that would be able to receive from each touch event a string variable to then tell displayName which frame to play. how to create custom event from beginning to end in AS3?I'd like to know how to create a custom event that extends the Event class and then how to dispatch it. Also, I'd like to know how to catch it using the addEventListener() in the format Event.ENTER_FRAME or Event.CHANGE etc...
I'm having some difficulty understanding how events work. I believe "ENTER_FRAME" is a constant holding some value but I don't see how that could dispatch an event. From what I understand; ENTER_FRAME is a static variable of the Event class?

In a kiosk application (with NO mouse action) I try to mimic the action of buttons...with movie clips.I was wondering if that would be possible to create new event handler for MC?So that, by script, I could tell something like:

I want to create an event handler dynamically, which will use certain parameters passed at the time of function creation as well as the event parameter passed at the time of the event firing.For example, the function would be created something like this:

I have a class file defined in my package as MyGlobals.as.[code] (I have tried adding/removing "static" and "dynamic" to no effect.)I am trying to call a touch event from the main timeline in this way:myObject.addEventListener(TouchEvent.TOUCH_BEGIN, MyGlobals.myFunctionName);(I have tried removing the class name to no effect.)When I compile I get the error 1046: Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant: TouchEvent. This error occurs on function definitions in the class file.What syntax/concept am I getting wrong? The functions were working fine when I was using constants in the timeline, but I need to be able to reuse these functions over and over again, so I wanted them to be able to take touch event variables so that I didn't have to write a different function for every touch event.I tried googling "error 1046" but I can't find anything useful.

I am stepping back up to AS3 after realizing that it would be easier if I learned AS2 prior to trying to understand AS3 (all documentation, online and in books, reference AS2..."in AS2 this was done this way.I am writing my first external class and trying to associate it with an object created in the Flash via the Library Linkage.I have a movieClip on the stage and have it associated with the following class that doesn't show any transition when tested.[code]

I've got a problem... here's an example script:

Ok, so here's the problem. What happens in the above, is that I call 'loadTheXML()', it loads the xml file into xmlLoader and then runs the event handler 'onLoad'. My problem is here: once I get into the event handler 'this' refers to xmlLoader, not the class. Therefore, I have no way of calling wannaCallThis(). How do I call a member function of the class from inside the eventHandler?

I have the following situation:I have an event handler, that displays small messages in my application's statusbar.These messages get passes through by dispatching events from custom components.A simple message could be like "HTTP Error" or so.Now, the main event listener, in the main application file, listens to the event dispatched by any custom component,but seems to refuse listening to events dispatched by custom AS classes.Here is my code for the custom event:

So to sum it all up:
- The event listener listens to the custom event dispatched by any custom component.
- The event listener does not listen to the custom event duspatched by an AS class.
Those who wonder, the event really gets dispatched, that's why I added a trace call.

I have written a framework that facilitates RPC calls between AS3 and PHP 5 called FlashMOG. I recently got a forum request that has introduced a pretty bizarre question regarding access control. This will be a lot easier to discuss if you have access to the FlashMOG 0.3.1 client source which is here:

The basic idea is that I have a FlashMOGService class which has an RPCSocket member that it may share with other FlashMOGService objects. The idea is that you can create two distinct FlashMOGService objects and have them both connect to the same host/port via socket. I use my special RPCSocket class for two reasons:
1) Let developers use one port but separate functionality into two distinct services...a form of multiplexing i guess
2) RPCSocket adds functionality to the standard Socket class that works to serialize and unserialize data and get it where it needs to go. The essence of the problem here is that created a class with a FlashMOGService object as a member and has tried to assign a private method of his class as an event handler to the FlashMOGService object:

My initial thought is that this should be fine because it's all done within the class. However, when I consider the monkey chain that results in this function being called, it seems almost logical that it wouldn't work. The problem is that the browser freezes when a socket message arrives that tries to call the service's client method, _service.client.firstClientMethod. This client firstClientMethod is attempted when data arrives from the server on the Socket (an RPCSocket, actually). The RPCSocket class deserializes the socket data and extracts an array with a service name, a method name, and an array of arguments. It looks into its own private class variable (an array of services using the RPCSocket) and tries to invoke whatever function was assigned thusly:

I have a document class called Main.as In the class constructor I have the following listener:

In a third class I make a call to the despatcher in the previous class:

I have trace statements in eveything and from this I know the despatcher in TellAllModeChangeToStudent is being called.The problem is that the listener in the main.as is not calling the function exp.I cant see why and I dont know how to check if the listener is actually seeing the dispatch event?

I want to dispatch a custom event from the Country() sto the MenuButton();[code]When a country is hovered a custom event is dispatched which I want the MenuButton to listen and if the parameter passed is the same as its name to get highlighted. The Country Class is the Base Class for my countries movieclips I have on stage and the MenuButton the Base Class for the menu button.

In a nutshell I have a custom event that I am dispatching from one class that is not getting picked up by the other class even though i have added the appropriate addEventListener calls on its constructor.Here's how the classes are laid out:
application(class/parent)
- network(class/child)
- loginscreen(class/child)
The constructor of the Application class creates and stores references to the network and loginscreen classes:

The NetworkManager class extends the MovieClip class as does the LoginScreen and Application classes as well.Now within the oLoginScreen class I dispatch the ValidateCredentialsEvent by calling it this way:

dispatchEvent (new ValidateCredentialsEvent(ValidateCredentialsEvent.VALIDATE_CREDENTIALS, oLoginData, true, false));
Then when I debug the code, I can step through and see that the ValidateCredentialsEvent is being generated but it is never picked up by the oNetworkManager class whatsoever.Is this occuring because the NetworkManager and LoginScreen classes are children of the Application class and because of this can't capture events raised by one another without using the Application class as the intermediary to redispatch these events? My whole idea here was to create a generic network managing object that could be called from anywhere within the application, by any object, using custom events.

I've been trying to create a simple loader class that loads an image file onto the stage.
Writing the code to perform the task is simple via the main timeline:

I have made a site in AS3.0 code and it's working fairly well but theres alot of things i'm trying to update to make the code a little more reusable. For startersI have a function that creates a little pop-up text when I roll over a button. The text is a class that I created in the Flash IDE instead of dynamically drawing it with actionscript.Here is the code for the pop up text instance called "enter_text" as it rolls over the movie clip "preloader_mc"

I have a custom class which creates a new MC using a library MC. The library MC contains a dynamic textfield called productName.
The custom class object gets created fine and is displaying on the stage. It's also holding custom properties I set as well.
How do I control the dynamic textfield inside the MC, which is inside the custom class object?

I would like to make a new instance of a MovieClip within my library from code written in my keyframe. I relise that you can do this by making a class and using the codeCode:var instancename:movieclipname = new movieclipname(); and with the MovieClips class I would need to extend MovieClip and nothing else. I am unsure if you put in the name of the MovieClip or the name of the MovieClip class in the code above so feel free to correct me. But instead of doing this can I just add a MovieClip to my stage with doing this

I had watched a CartoonSmart Tutorial on AS3, and the amount of code that goes into a button seems to much (especially coming from AS2). I tried to create a custom class to make my life easier for this, but... I ran into a snag.

I have the following as code in a separate file placed in the root folder of the swf file. The as file is the class for a MovieClip in the library.When i manually place the library symbol on the stage, the MC works fine and draws the square with the nodes. However, when I try to create a copy using ' new sqMC();' code, I get an error.

This is NOT duplicate of my earlier post (its is slightly different)But this is similar issue with similar error but its not the same error The error I am getting now is below while dispatching the custom event from my custom component
TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert events::MapEvent@a74ab51 to flash.events.MouseEvent.
dispatchEvent(new MapEvent(MapEvent.CLICKED_ON_MAP));
Note: The error in my earlier post is giving below error message
Type Coercion failed: cannot convert flash.events::Event@81ecb79 to com.events.ShopEvent
The difference here are two things, the earlier error is while converting flash event to custom event and now this one is while converting custom event to flash event and secondly, I have no clue why it is trying to convert to the mouseevent where I am just dispatching my custom event with proper listeners.

For graphical representation I use fla file as a resource. I work in Flash Builder 4.6 to code. I try to create own class Panel which contains the click event. But event doesn't work when I test the move! When I move the event handler (buttonClick) and event listener to main class (test) and apply the event to the card object (for example), all works fine.

I'm trying to add an eventListener to a custom class. I created a motion tween in CS4 and exported the motion as as3, which then gave me a chunk of code.I then took that code and turned it into a class. What I'd like to be able to do is set up an event listener in my FLA to listen for when this animation is done playing, however, I have been unable to get that to work. Do I need to add something else to my class? Is there something wrong with how I'm trying to implement the class in my FLA?Here's the code for the class:
