ActionScript 3.0 :: Flash - Document Class And Instantiating Linkage / Exported Library Items?
Aug 19, 2010
I have a symbol named picHolder. In symbol properties under linkage, I chose "Export for ActionScript" and "Export in frame 1" and gave it a class name of picHolder.Normally, to instantiate a new instance, I'd say:
Code:
var tempPic:picHolder = new picHolder();
and I'd go about my way.

I've been running circles around this preloader I have for days now. There's a number of problems, but the main one I can't seem to figure out is how to retrieve a library asset from an external class that's not the document class.I have a Preloader_mc class in the library. But the Document.as class doesn't need it really. I only need it once I instance the actually Loading.as class. So I'm trying to access it from the Loading.as and I'm not getting anywhere.I also gave up by instancing it in the Document.as and then referencing it by:
Code:
Master.preloader_mc
or
Code:
Master(root).preloader_mc
Static or not, I just wanted access to the thing for once. Which worked until I had to remove it from the Loading.as. Then it wouldn't budge no matter what I typed.

Is there a way I can load a swf file but not automatically instantiate it's DocumentClass? Instead I want to do something like the following:
protected function mainLoaded(e:Event = null):void {
trace('mainLoaded');
var main:* = this.mainLoad.createClassByName('Main');
trace(main);
}
Where mainLoad is an instance of CasaLib's SwfLoad and createClassByName is the equivalent to
loaderInfo.applicationDomain.getDefinition();
The thing is that when my swf finishes loading I can see it is created, because of some trace calls, although its obviously not added to the display list.

right now i have some items in my library that use a base class using the linkage menu item by right clicking on the item in the library.
i want to dynamically populate the movie clips instead of them being already in the library. I know how to create/populate the movieclips by using the loader class, but i am not sure how i assign the base class to each movieclip i create in my .as file

I have several SWF's (secondary) published that I want to load into a main (primary) SWF file when the corresponding button is released. I'm currently using loadMovie to load external SWFs into a container_mc on main stage of primary SWF. This works, the secondary SWF loads when it's button is released.But, the secondary SWF has items in it's library that Export for Actionscript, and they should load onto the secondary SWFs stage inside a container_mc (has a different instance name from the one used in main stage). These library items are not showing up. One should load immediately, the others after button releases. None are loading.Should this work? Will items in the library of the secondary SWF that are set to Export for Actionscript be available to load once the secondary SWF is loaded into the primary SWF? Do I have to share the library of the loaded SWF with the main SWF?

When I set the following class as my document class it works (draws a rectangle) but when I don't set it as my document class and instead instantiate it using var myRec:simple_shape = new simple_shape(); in first frame of my timeline nothing happens no rectangle and no error either). why and how I can get it to work without setting it as my document class?

I am loading one swf into another using the Loader class, but when the child swf finishes loading and is added to the display list, its Document Class is not instantiated. I have a few trace statements that should execute when the object is created, but nothing is happening when loaded into the parent SWF. When I compile the child SWF on its own, the Document Class runs as expected.
So I'm wondering... how do I associate a child SWF's Document Class with Loader.content?

I have a movie clip that holds one bitmap image, some simple AS3 to change the image displayed, and a ton of bitmaps I've imported into my library.Currently, I swap the images by changing the bitmapData
holder.bitmapData = new test2(1,1);
but this requires me to check off 'Export for ActionScript' in every symbol. I'd rather not go through every bitmap in the library and do this, is there some way to reference them by their library name?

If one uses [Embed] to refer to external graphic assets its easy to instantiate and use them.However, I've got a png in an Fla, with the Class identifier set to "Symbols", Base class is BitmapData.I need to instantiate it like this:
var symbols:BitmapData = new Symbols(1, 1);
addChild(new Bitmap(symbols));
Of course the compiler complains about a call to a possibly undefined method Symbols.For a temporary fix I guess i'll put the graphic external to the swf, but for this project it needs to be in the library along with everything else.

How do I reference a library movieclip in a class? I couldn't get it to work entering the name of the class in the linkage properties (as2 class name text field). The variable was undefined. I know I'm missing something....what is it?

Flex complains if I want to create an object from a library symbol with linkage: 1180: Call to a possibly undefined method [linkage name]. So to avoid this, I create a class for that symbol, in this case extending BitmapData using Flex's new ActionScript Class feature. Flex create that class for me and the constructor looks like this: public function CustomBitmapData(width:int, height:int, transparent:Boolean=true, fillColor:uint=null)

I am working on a new site, and in the site items from the library are brought on to and taken off the main stage through a handful of functions in the document class. I also have a main menu class that is responsible for building and adding menu items. The way it is built currently, these menu items must somehow reach into the document class and call the functions I created earlier, but I am unsure how to do this. Most things I find on how to call a parents method end with the person saying if it built correctly you shouldn't be doing this at all.

I'm still in the 'need to learn a lot more' phase of AS3 and am wondering the best way to do this. I have some graphics (MovieClips) in my library that I'd like to have use the same class. But Flash wants unique class names.What's the proper way to handle this? External swf graphics?

Got two classes "Engine.as" and "Player.as". Engine.as is the document class that is calling Player.as.
The point is to have Player.as create a movieclip on the stage, but it seems it cannot access the library or something. Because when the player class is at the createHero() method it gives me the "error 1009 cannot access a property or method of a null object reference"
Engine class:
Code:
package test{
import flash.display.*;
import flash.events.*;

I'm trying to figure out how to add a movieclip (called menuList) from the main fla library to the stage inside my document class. Up until now I've just created new mc's or used ones already on stage in the fla but now I need to add directly from the library. In the following example I've tried to create a variable, type it, and define it as the menuList_mc object but I just get the 1120: Access of undefined property menuList_mc message. What am I doing wrong here?
ActionScript Code:
public var menuList:MovieClip;
public function createMenuList(event:Event = null):void //called by constructor{
menuList = menuList_mc;
//addChild(menuList); will do this after i properly define menuList
}

I have a movie clip in one document. I want to move this movie clip to another document, but whenever I do I get this message:
"One or more library items already exist in the document. Replace?"
I checked on the net and people said this happens if there are things with the same name in each document. But this movie clip has a completely different name than any movie clip. Yet, this message still comes up.

I am dispatching an event from one document class and listening for it via another document class.My code in class A.
Code:
this.dispatchEvent(new MYEvent(MyEvent.APERTURE_DONE));
trace("Dispatching APERTURE_DONE");
my code in class B.
Code:
addEventListener(MyEvent.APERTURE_DONE, onDoorsOpen,true);
trace("Lisetning for APERTURE_DONE");
[code]....
My listener is registering before the event is dispatched, based on my output window, however I never get the "Open Doors" trace statement to fire.

I am trying to use AMF PHP to pass variables to a flash file, thus far I cannot see anything wrong with my code, but I have very little experience with creating classes, so here it goes, here is my code,
index.php:
<?php
include "amfphp/services/flashMe.php";
$session = true;
[Code].....
Flash is looking for the flashMe class and the push method within that class, but I keep getting null variables in my flash file when I run it

Assume I know practically nothing about AS3! I'm using Flash Pro CS5. I'm trying to reassociate a flash file I've been given with its external assets and classes. In the library I have a movieclip with linkage to a class called 'StaticMap' using the base class 'flash.display.MovieClip'. am I missing a custom class file called 'StaticMap.as' that was originally located in the same folder as the fla, or is this a generic class accessible to all movieClips from within Flash?

In the past, we've put a stop() action in the timeline of movieclip symbols so that the timeline would not play and we would control all animations via code. We've also done that to the main timeline as well. Is this still needed for performance reasons? Is this needed for dynamically created movieclips? I know that the Sprite class should be used if there is no timeline associated with it.

I am instantiating assets (skins) from external SWF:
Code:
var asset : Class = loader.contentLoaderInfo.applicationDomain.getDefinition(myName) as Class;
var myClip : MovieClip = new asset() as MovieClip;
all works well but...The assets in library are basically images (jpegs) and I would like to avoid encapsulating them into MovieClips when you can export them for actionscript directly. This could significantly improve my work flow, but...
The problem is that the base class for any image in the library is BitmapData and the constructor for BitmapData needs two arguments, width and height which could vary...
Code:
var asset : Class = loader.contentLoaderInfo.applicationDomain.getDefinition(myName) as Class;
var myBmp : BitmapData = new asset(?, ?) as BitmapData ;

currently this is the problem i'm having.i'm exporting a symbol - song1 - from my library to AS ("export for actionscript") and then using it to dynamically create some movieclips (hereafter referred to as MC's) on the stage. each MC contains a text field that is filled by an value in an array....
Code:
function xmlLoaded(event:Event):void {
songList_XML = new XML(xmlLoader.data);
var songNodes:XMLList = songList_XML.song.title
var songTime:XMLList = songList_XML.song.time
[code]....
Now all this works without a hitch - all the trace statements produce what they are supposed to and the MC's appear on the stage where they are supposed to and with the proper text (song name song time).
BUT - here's what i don't understand - *how do i REFER to the INSTANCES of each clip*?because they are created dynamically they don't have instance names and there is no way to assign them instance names via AS (right?).i tried to use the Display List to access them by assigning each one a name (last line - commented out) and then using the getChildByName() method - for ex. getChildByName("nameSong1"). but that didn't work either... i have a few other ideas but they all seem ridiculously complicated - i believe there's GOT to be a *simple* solution for this but i've checked all the references i have (O'Reilly, AS Bible, and others) and found almost nothing. just the display list trick above which didn't work.

Is there anyway in ActionScript 3.0 to assign instance names to movieclips in the library without assigning linkage id? I said that because I have over 1000 movieclips in the library that I need to be able to manipulate at runtime. I hope I don't have to Right Click -> Linkage... a thousand times to assign the linkage IDs. How can I reference to the library movieclips without having to name 1000 times?

I have just started my first project using AS3.0 and Flash 9 this week.I feel like I know AS3.0 from my flex experience very well, but it is downscaled for Flash 9. Anyway I have looked for this issue in the forums and maybe I am just missing something.I have a class we'll call MyClass which extends Sprite. I have several methods in there that update things like rotation and position based on events it is listening for via the model. I even have a trace statement in the constructor for testing.
Now maybe this is just stupidly obvious but when ever I set a library element to link with the class (i.e. linkage = MyClass), all my script fails to work. If I remove that linkage and work from a purely data perspective it works as expected.I have the project settings to Flash 9 and AS3.0 so that shouldn't be an issue.

I have a problem with loading SWF and access to their elements by class linkage in Adobe AIR 2.6 for Android.
Problem: I have two different .swf files:
file1.swf (in which MovieClip with name1 has class linkage 'mainScreen')
file2.swf (in which MovieClip with name2 has class linkage 'mainScreen')
They have some action script code, which I need to import in my application domain. Files downloading great. After downloading they are in differen app domains But when I'm getting elements by class linkage and add them to stage - only element which was loaded second is shown. Looks like second movieclip with same class linkage replaces the first one.
For this I'm using such approach:
how can I load two different elements SWF files, which have elements with same class linkage, or explain why I can not do this? When elements have different class linkages - all OK. But!!! It is working for web, but for air it don't want to work.
package
{
import flash.display.*;
[Code]....
