ActionScript 3.0 :: Flash - Linked With XML Displaying Specific Tag?

Im trying to create an animation of some butterflies that when you clic on them, a dynamic text box would fade in and display a phrase.This phrase would be stored in a data base. This data base is made up by an ID field and a text field (with the phrase). I need a math.random script that 1- would check how many phrases there are (since the phrases are not final, there will be more added with time) 2 - pick one of them 3 - would pick the text on that ID and print it on my dynamic text.---- this is my code so far:

On the mxmlc command line, I can include paths to RSL files. I can choose to link these RSLs at runtime by setting
-static-link-runtime-shared-libraries=false What if I need to link to some rsls and embed (static-link) other rsls? Is there a way to set the link settings for each rsl?

I have Adobe Creative Suite, but I haven't begun to learn how to use Flash yet. I work primarily with PHP using Dreamweaver and have a very basic understanding of JavaScript.I just discovered a really cool script here. The page displays a Flash image map of Africa and a table listing every nation in Africa. If you hover over Kenya on the map, Kenya is highlighted on both the map and the table. Vice versa, if you hover over the word Kenya on the table, Kenya is highlighted on both the table and the map.
I would like to duplicate this on my website. (It's in the public domain.) So I copied the source code, then began recreating the style sheets, JavaScript files and images. When I view the page locally, I see the Flash image (map of Africa). But when I hover over a nation on the map, it says "undefined," rather than showing the name of the nation. The table listing the nations doesn't display at all.
Does anyone have any idea how this affect is created? Can you offer any tips that might help me recreate it on my site? It appears that AJAX is another technology used on the page. That's something else I have no experience with, but I'm not sure if AJAX is associated with the Flash map/table function or not.

I have some XML which is driving a voting system (poll) using PHP. The PHP is including the <name>, <image> and <flash> nodes which are then displayed in an output browser to the user.Inside each flash object however, I want to include a separate MP3 file from the same XML file - from <song>. Could anyone point me in the right way for doing this? I'm not sure how to refer to the <song> nodes in Actionscript - I have the PHP all complete with the flash player I've made which appear for each candidate on the output PHP (contains a play and stop button).XML CODE (poll.xml)

I designed a flash banner with buttons. I am trying to get those buttons linked to other pages in my website. I have tried several methods but none appear to work. The first thing I tried to was to assign the buttons to my other webpages through using the behaviours under the windows tab in Flash CS4. It worked when using the publish preview option (preview in flash) and choosing Flash, but when I went to add the banner to my webpage through Dreamweaver, the buttons would not work. I tried another method and used actionscript 3.0. I kept getting errors.

I have Flash CS3. I have created a flash file. If I click on the SWF file I have no problems opening it It plays. It looks nice I'm the man.However, now when I try to publish it, the HTML file will not work. It says "windows cannot find this file,you have typed the location correctly".I am double clicking directly on the file and not typing anything, in fact I was considering checking on Ebay to see if I could upgrade my PC to have eyes.The feature has worked previously, which leads me to the conclusion that something else has changed. I have tried using the publish setting, I have also tried using Dreamweaver to embed the file, and have also tried manually inserting the necessary code after seeing some on a website.

i have a movie that has a swf player practically on every page playing a number of different videos.When I export it usually and play it on another computer the flash file won't play the videos as they simply are not there

However one problem I have encountered is the only way I can make the buttons appear after the video is finished, is by dragging out the single frame of video on the timeline to whatever length in seconds it is multiplied by the number of frames per second.
Is there some way to maintain each linked clip in a single frame and only move to the next frame (which contains the relative buttons) after the video is finished?

I've got a linked class, with an external .as file, tied to a movie clip called "Menu" in an encompassing fla. In this actionscript file, I am trying to pull some information from a few things I made with the flash authoring tool. There are a few symbols on stage in the fla that I drew with instance names "greensboro" and "birmingham", and I want to get their x-position inside some functions of the linked class. I've tried returning a value from "greensboro.x" but of course it says the variable greensboro doesn't exist, because I haven't defined it in the class. Surely there is some way of getting that info in a variable of my linked class!

I am creating a Flex 4 project and would like to do an actionscript based login with encryption, but I obviously don't want it to be easily decompiled.If I dynamically link to a swf file that is in a "non-browse" directory, would a decompiler of the base application actionscript file also give the code of the linked file? How do you define a relative link to the source of a linked library in Flash Builder (4).

i've been all afternoon trying to figure out a solution to my problem, and I can't seem to find it, or cannot implement it. Let me lay it out for you: I have an actionscript file linked to a movieclip. (movieclip:skate class linked: generic_skate).I have it set up that way so I can create an array of skates easily (i'm using a for loop to create them), and each skate has its own attributes (name, description, price and the image that is supposed to go on the deck)In the stage, i have three text boxes, one for the price, other for the name, and another one for the description.In the generic_skate class, I'm handling all the mouse events (in this case mouseOver and mouseOut.
What i want to accomplish is: when the user hovers over a skate, the info shows up in the text fields and when he hovers out, the info goes away. My problem: Since I'm doing all the mouse interaction in the class file, my guess is that I have to access the stage to get to the text boxes that are placed there to change its info or somehow create a "middle" man to do all the handling.

(Spoiler alert: It's not an issue of my package statement not reflecting the location of my class file.) When I have a class linked to a MovieClip in my library and that class takes an argument in its constructor method. That class will compile properly ONLY when it's located in my top-level directory (same dir as the .fla and Document.as files). If I move that class to a deeper directory, say com.place, the compiler will generate error "1136: Incorrect number of arguments. Expected 0.

I'm building a video player using Flash CS4 (hereby referred to as "Flash") to create the graphic symbols and compiling and debugging with Flash Builder 4 ("FB4"). Here are the steps I take in my current workflow: --Create the graphic symbols in Flash. I've created a few different symbols for the player, but I'll focus on just the play/pause button ("ppbutton") here. --In the Library panel, I go to the ppbutton symbol's Linkage properties and link to a class named assets.PlayPauseButtonAsset that extends MovieClip. I do not actually have an assets package nor do I have a class file for PlayPauseButtonAsset as Flash will create them for me when I publish.
--In Flash's Publish settings, I set the project to export a SWC that will be used in FB4, called VideoPlayerAssets.swc. --After the SWC is created, I create my FB4 project called "VideoPlayer" and add the SWC to my path. FB4 creates the class VideoPlayer in the default package automatically. --In VideoPlayer.as, I import assets.*, which imports all of the symbol classes I created in Flash and are available via VideoPlayerAssets.swc. I can now instantiate the ppbutton and add to the stage, like this:

I've got a number of related projects set up in Flash Builder. Each project gets its graphical assets from an exported SWC file (or multiple SWC files.) This works fine, but I wanted to create a shared project that contains stuff used across all projects. The first item in there is a screen with a number of clips containing dynamic text fields on them. This screen (and associated assets) are exported to a SWC and then I have written code in the shared project to add functionality to the screen and buttons. I'm using 2 fonts, both are embedded.
Both show up just fine in my test harness, but when I link the shared SWC and src folder (which is required in order to use this code/assets in the other projects) the textfields blank out if I try to set their text properties. If I leave the default text (set in the FLA) it shows up, and the static text fields in the FLA also show up, it's only when I set the text property.
I've tried a number of combinations, including removing embedding, exporting for ActionScript, setting all textfields in the shared project to dynamic, all with no luck. The main project does have the same font embedded, and I've checked that the same glyphs are selected in both the main and shared projects. I realize this is a rather complicated setup, but I have yet to find a workflow to allow a designer and developer to work on large projects that is better (but I'd love to hear one!)

Running Flash CS3, I've reviewed the lynda.com tutorial on building particle systems in ActionScript 3.0 to try and build some shooting sparks in an animation.I'm getting stuck at what I think is a really elementary point, but I can't seem to get past it.
Basically, all I'm trying to do at this point is create a class called Particle (which I will teach to do things that particles do a little later) link it to a MovieClip on the stage in my .fla file and use the particle's update function to move it across the stage in a manner defined in the instance (so I can later give different movement properties to each AS generated instance of the MC). I know there are easier ways to accomplish my base task without loading an external package, but this seems so strightforward that I must be doing something very simple wrong I just can't see so I thought I'd post the code here and see what I'm missing.
I start with a file called Particle.as in the same folder as my Spark Test.fla file.
In Particle.as I have the following code:

So I'm declaring that all particles are built with no motion, but if they are explicitly granted an x or y velocity, they will move by that much when the instance's update function is called in the timeline.
Then in my Spark Test.fla file, I have a small shape in a MovieClip called Spark. In the Linkage properties of Spark I have chosen to Export for ActionScript and Export in FIrst Frame. The class is called Spark and the Base class is Particle. For testing purposes I've dropped an instance on the stage and called it spark. Then in the actions layer in the first frame (the timeline is just the spark layer and the actions layer, one frame long each with no "stop();" so it should run forever) I have included the following code:

What it looks like this should do is on each ENTER_FRAME Flash should call updateSpark which is a function that runs the update() event for the spark instance which is a instance of a movieclip that has an update event which moves x and y position by their relative velocity variables. This all seems pretty straightforward to me, but when I ctrl-Enter to test the movie, I get the following 3 compiler errors:
Particle.as Line 1: 5000: The class 'Particle' must subclass 'flash.display.MovieClip' since it is linked to a library symbol of that type.
Particle.as Line 7: 1071: Syntax error: expected a definition keyword (such as function) after attribute public, not xVelocity.
Particle.as Line 7: 1084: Syntax error: expecting rightbrace before semicolon.

I am having an issue with compiling a .swf. I get the following error on what seems to be related to the images. There is about 40 that are all very similar the the error code listed below:

We have a completed flash game similar to Tetris that is ready to be "linked up" for multiplayer. After doing some research and asking here: Flash Sockets, Peer-to-Peer Capabilities , we have come to the conclusion that P2P networking done in the way xbox/ps3 games handle online games is not possible without expensive/dubious adobe software/services (FMS/Cirrus) on the flash platform at this point in time. Basically, a flash client is not allowed to become a "host" listening on sockets without the RTMFP protocol.
The Question that needs Suggestions:With that summary, the question is... what is the best way to implement the network infrastructure for a game like Tetris, which has quite a bit of small I/O going from user to user (say, a max of 4 players at a time). Given that we can't assign a single player as the host p2p style, our options are:
1.) Fat Server with Game Logic, Light Clients updating display/interpolating based on server updates (Ala Quake)
2.) Light Server handling communication between Fat Clients (Ala Concurrent simulation like RTS games)
The problem is, we are inexperienced when it comes to networking games and therefore would really love some advice on the pros/cons of those solutions (or even other solutions). Our Tetris game isn't as trivial as sending "attacking lines" when a client clears lines to add to the other players currently battling. We need a little more real-time syncing than that. For example, the list of next tetriminos is a single shared source where everyone is "fighting" for desirable pieces.
Finally, depending on the implementation chosen, I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with Node.js on game servers. I'd assume if the server was a lightweight server only handling transfers of data between clients that Node would be a good perfect fit. However, if game logic was placed on the node.js server, I'd assume that the blocking nature of the calculations would make Node.js' single threaded no-blocking I/O approach redundant?
