Flash :: Flex - Manage Library Symbols With Linked Classes In CS4 To Compile / Debug In Builder 4?

Apr 2, 2010

I'm building a video player using Flash CS4 (hereby referred to as "Flash") to create the graphic symbols and compiling and debugging with Flash Builder 4 ("FB4"). Here are the steps I take in my current workflow: --Create the graphic symbols in Flash. I've created a few different symbols for the player, but I'll focus on just the play/pause button ("ppbutton") here. --In the Library panel, I go to the ppbutton symbol's Linkage properties and link to a class named assets.PlayPauseButtonAsset that extends MovieClip. I do not actually have an assets package nor do I have a class file for PlayPauseButtonAsset as Flash will create them for me when I publish.

--In Flash's Publish settings, I set the project to export a SWC that will be used in FB4, called VideoPlayerAssets.swc. --After the SWC is created, I create my FB4 project called "VideoPlayer" and add the SWC to my path. FB4 creates the class VideoPlayer in the default package automatically. --In VideoPlayer.as, I import assets.*, which imports all of the symbol classes I created in Flash and are available via VideoPlayerAssets.swc. I can now instantiate the ppbutton and add to the stage, like this:

Actionscript 3 :: Automatically Generate Classes For Symbols From Flash IDE Library?

Mar 14, 2012

My workflow usually goes like this: i create a symbol in Flash IDE with textfields, containers, etc. Then I select "export for actionscript" and type in the classname (automatic declaration of stage instances, of course, is off). Then i create a corresponding classfile in FDT and declare all this textfields and other objects that are in my symbol. This is pretty routine and boring process that takes a lot of time.

Is there a way to automate it? Maybe some plugin for flash IDE that will automatically create a class file based on symbol exported for AS?

Update: So, following the answer Pavel fljōt provided, i wrote my own command to accomplish this task.[URL]..

Actionscript 3 :: Link Library Symbols In Flash CS4 To Base Classes From An External .swc (rsl)?

Jan 27, 2010

This question stems from this question that I asked yesterday.I've followed Theo's advice and created a .swc with all the common classes and added the .swc as an external library to my module .swf. This all seems to have worked smoothly--I don't get TypeErrors and my classes are all present in the catalog.xml of the .swc file when I unzip it--but now I've encountered a new problem: when I try to link a symbol in the module .fla's library to a base class from my .swc rsl, it says the base class definition can't be found in the classpath. The whole reason I want to use rsls is so I can do this,If I now include the project's source path or the .swc in the normal (not external) library path, will that cancel the sharing benefits of the rsl, or will the compiler still know not to compile the shared classes into the module .swf?

Flex :: Get Debug Symbols For Flash Player?

Oct 14, 2009

The company I am working for has a flash component (using flex and cs4) that crashes intermittently in chrome, FF and IE. (so far only win32 platforms)

I submitted a bug report to Adobe but have not heard anything back from them. Their support process seems like a black hole. WE can get a dump from Flash using these steps but after submitting the bug we got no help at all.

We loaded this into MS visual studio but can;t get decent stack information because there are no symbols for the flash stuff.

Microsoft and other companies provide symbols to help with debugging and we would like to get that from adobe. Is there any way to make progress on this?

Does anyone know where to get flash symbols or how else we can make progress?

It is hard to debug the process if the container just dies.

the binary is flash10c.ocx

I just spent a painful hour on the phone with adobe folks - and the final answer from one of them (I spoke to about 8 people) was that they do not have a per incident purchase plan for developer support for flash.

Flash :: Flex Builder 4 Can't Run Or Debug

Jun 2, 2011

I've been working in Flash BUilder 4.0. I installed Flash Builder 4.5, and switched to the workspace I had used for 4.0. Then we were told to go back to 4.0, and now I can't run or debug. I can build, but then I have to double click on the .html file to run. Right clicking doesn't bring up run or debug, and the run and debug icons are not in my toolbar.

I have declared a dummy:int variable and it is also not visible.

Flash :: Make Flex Builder Debugger Start Listening For Incoming Debug Session Connections

Nov 10, 2009

Is there any way to get Flex Builder to connect to an existing browser session running Flash Player Debugger? I can connect to FDB like this, but with Builder I need to click Debug and rush to close the newly opened browser window before it loads the Flash file and then go back to the session I want to connect and right click it to start the debugger.

Unfortunately this is not very reliable as I can't always beat the window opening, requiring several attempts before being able to connect to the session I am interested in. If I could just tell Builder 'Start debugging' and then have it wait for the connection, I could now calmly go over to the browser, right click, hit debug, provide the IP and voila. This would allow me to inspect variables on a hard to replicate bug on a session running on a tester's computer.

Flash :: Manage Multi-frame MovieClips With Classes?

Apr 15, 2012

After switching to AS3, I've been having a hell of a time figuring out the best way to manage MovieClips that have UI elements spread across multiple frames with a single class. An example that I am working on now is a simple email form. I have a MovieClip with two frames:

the 1st frame has the form elements (text inputs, submit button) the 2nd frame has a "you" message and a button to go back to the first frame (to send another email) In the library I have linked the MovieClip to a custom class (Emailer). My immediate problem is how do I assign a MouseEvent.CLICK event to the button on the 2nd frame? I should note at this point that I am trying to avoid putting code on the timeline (except for stop() calls). This is how I am 'solving' the problem now:

Emailer registers an event listener for a frame change ( addEventListener("frame 2", onFrameChange) )On the 2nd frame of the MovieClip I am calling dispatchEvent(new Event("frame 2")); (I would prefer to not have this code on the frame, but I don't know what else to do)

My two complaints with this method are that, first I have calls to addEventListener spread out across different class methods (I would rather have all UI event listeners registered in one method), and second that I have to dispatch those custom "onFrameChange" events. The second complaint grows exponentially for MovieClips that have more than just 2 frames.

My so called solution feels makes me feel dirty and makes my brain hurt. I am looking for any advice on what to do differently. Perhaps there's a design pattern I should be looking at? Should I swallow my pride and write timeline code even though the rest of my application is written in class files (and I abhor the Flash IDE code editor)?

I absolutely LOVE the event system, and have no problem coding applications with it, but I feel like I'm stuck thinking in terms of AS2 when working with mutl-frame movieclips and code.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Flex Builder W. Flash Library Items?

May 6, 2009

I have found a way! It's very complicated though... Hopefully someone has an idea on how to clean this up...

The workflow:
------------------
I'm using Flash to draw movieClips which are exported as one assets.swc file and then used in Flex for coding.

The scenario:
------------------
I've been working / thinking about this for the past 3 days.. it's driving me a little crazy. I've simplified my code down to 3 boxes that are drawn onto the screen. Each containing one background movieClip. The three boxes are three individual box clips in the Flash IDE library (different designs). But all three boxes share the same functionality.

The problem:
------------------
When using a custom baseclass (AbstractBox.as) to define all the functionality for the boxes, Flex looses all the code hinting for the movieClips inside the box movieClip (bg in our example) Also it seems like Interfacing doesn't work since as3 can't define MovieClip instances or any other variables in interfaces.

[code]...

Now my question: Why is this so complicated!? Isn't there a cleaner / simpler way to write this?

Flex :: Compile An ActionScript Class That Is In A Package To A Swf Using Builder 3?

Jul 11, 2009

How do I configure an ActionScript Project in Flex Builder 3 Pro so that I can compile an ActionScript class that is part of a package into a swf. For example, the class that I want to compile to swf is:

package utils {
import flash.display.Sprite;
public class Tool extends Sprite {[code]....

RootASProject is being produced by one developer, subASProject1 and subSubASProject1a by another developer, utils.Tool by yet another person. This directory structure enables each person to independently build modules and other resources, and quickly test the entire product. It is also important to note that these resources are loaded at runtime. So, class definitions must be fully qualified. For example, Tool.swf contains/defines "utils.Tool" not "Tool".

Developing with just the Flash IDE, this directory structure is not a problem. We create a Tool.fla and assign utils.Tool as it's Document Class then in the Flash IDE's Publish Setting, we set the class path to be NOT the current directory (.), but instead the RootASProject directory. If it were set to the current directory, the error would be: A file found in a source-path must have the same package structure '', as the definition's package, 'utils'. ToolTool.as. We're familiar with this error message and so I recognize that the Flex IDE is by default looking in the current directory for a subfolder, utils, to match the packaged class.

In the Flex IDE, I can add the utils parent, RootASProject, as an additional source path, but I do not know how to stop flex from looking in the current directory first.Using an ant build file, I can set the source path to RootASProject and the mxmlc is able to build utils/Tool.swf just fine. Apparently, it uses just the source paths passed to it, and does not automatically look for utils in the current directory.

Flash :: Unit Testing A Library With AsUnit In Flex Builder?

Mar 3, 2010

I've been trying to setup a working method for unit testing flex libraries using Flex Builder. i have tried setting up a standard flex lib project and using Ant to compile and run the units tests. But this means that when something does go wrong and I want to use the flex builder debugger I cannot do so.

So my next plan is to setup the library as a normal as3/flax/air app as I can use the concept of a main class to run the unit tests. I can then compile the actual library code using Ant.

I could also setup a separate companion project who's sole task is to run units tests on the lib. But this is a little awkward as each library now requires two projects to manage. How do other people develop flex libraries and use unit tests to test/develop/debug the code?
