ActionScript 3.0 :: [Flex] Workflow - Dynamically Choose Swfs / Swcs
Apr 16, 2010
I'm in the process of planning a banner project, where I want to being able to output all banner formats (about 10+ of them) from the same flex project. They will all contain pretty much the same content but with some variation, and because of the size limit I want to load only the necessary assets for each format.
I wonder if there's a way to dynamically load different assets (in form of swf or swc) depending on some setting? I can of course load different swf:s into the main swf but I want only one swf per format. How about launch configurations, is there a way to choose different swc:s there?

I want to use the strengths of both Flex and Flash in an upcoming project. Doing the graphical related stuff in Flash and all the coding in Flex.
What i want to do is create a layout in flash making classes as you would normally by creating symbols and exporting them for actionscript etc. Then i want to export them as a SWC and edit all the classes in Flexbuilder. A CustomButton symbol is given a CustomSymbol.as ie. extend the classes in the SWC which will give the same functionality. This however wont work if i got nested layouts. Since the components laid out in flash are not of the same type. I somehow want to directly get in control of the Classes in the SWC.

I have just started looking into using Modules in Flex and would like to know how you all go about developing them.I understand how to use them (load, unload, application domains, shared classes, etc.), but I'm wondering what a good workflow is in creating them and using them in multiple applications.If I were building reusable application components (text editor, image cropper, compass, whatever), and I wanted to reuse them in many different applications, it seems like I would:
1) Create an Application specifically for one of those modules
2) Create a Module inside that Application
3) Develop the Module by itself, make it work right
4) Link shared libraries to it somehow (like library projects I would use between all of the modules)
5) ... then I'm unclear what's next.I now have lets say 10 Module/Applications, and I want to start mashing them together into usable applications.What's the best way to do this?I would like to not have to copy-paste code and swfs, using something like git submodules if an equivalent is possible.

I'm looking for suggestions regarding implementing process flow / work flow management in a PureMVC based application. Our Flex application includes a number of processes such as account creation, payment processing, etc. Within our team, there is some discussion of how rigidly we should adhere to the PureMVC model. Within the PureMVC model, it seems reasonable that the current state in the process could be managed in a Proxy. Commands are clearly responsible for processing the actions required of each node and for node transitions. Mediators for managing the UI.
However, I think that there is an important bit still missing here: a ProcessController. The approaches we've reviewed all seem to either violate the PureMVC model (even just slightly) or make unreadable code. A proxy would maintain the state of the process. As such, it seems to be an appropriate way to implement the controller. However, this is putting a lot of business logic into the proxy.

I am trying to develop a flex 3 application that would appear like a vertical/horizontal hierarchy. It will represent the flow of any application based on user selection.
Here black dots represent the nodes (description) that could be furthur divided into sub-nodes having their own description. White nodes represents the end-point of that expanded view branch. Each node represents some part of application,

Can someone tell me if its possible to create relative as opposed to absolute paths to swcs in module dependencies for Flex or actionscript modules?In Flex Builder i would simply edit the swc path as'../lib/.swc..But there doesn't seem to be a way to edit the path in IntelliJ once you've defined it.

I have several nested VBoxes in flex, and I'm aiming for one of them to get scrollbars if the total content is larger than the window height. However, when I grow the container, it doesn't get scrollbars at all (vertical scroll policy is AUTO), and the outer container stretches past the bottom of the screen, causing the entire app to get scrollbars. So it looks something like this:

HTTPService has a property resultFormat which can be set to any of the following: array e4x flashvars object text xml .I looked at the documentation to understand the difference, but still couldn't understand when to use each. I'm looking for the lightest weight of all of them.
P.S. I'm consuming output from my own server, so can change the output format as needed to make it compatible with each.

Imagine we have an object dispatching some event and this object should perform some action on this event. What's the right way of catching this event? May I listen to this event directly in my object or should I let this event travel through EventMap? Example: I have a popup window with form. On submitting form, I'm going to send a request to remote server and close this popup. Is it ideologically correct to perform popup close on click without dispatching custom event to EventMap?

I have recently been using Charles the debugging app. And noticed a very chatty app named skyrocket (a very very cool slide presentation app) sending a lot of data across the wire. It is built in flex by the looks and I was wondering why they had chosen to send their data using base64 and not amf. Is it because they don't want to be locked into the flash platform? Or could there be another reason. Is it to store it as XML in the database as they don't want to be dealing with amf when handing data to other services/clients (iPhone etc).

I am builder a graph that is going to cover an entire month. The user may change the Month/Year but there is no point in choosing a date for the month as it is going to show the entire month anyways. So is there a way to maybe make the DateChooser date always the first and only allow the user to pick the month and year?

building and using a SWC.Essentially, my only goal is to put a bunch of assets in a library, and have those assets included when a different swf is compiled. Compile-time, not runtime.
In my assets FLA, I add an FLV to the timeline of a movieclip. In the movieclip properties, I select Export for ActionScript and give it a unique classname ("FLV_intro"). In Publish Settings, I choose "Export SWC" and click Publish.
In my main FLA, I goto Actionscript Settings, Library Path, and add the SWC. In the code for my main FLA's document class, I do this:
var VideoClass:Class = getDefinitionByName("FLV_intro") as Class;
_video = new VideoClass();
_videoHolder.addChild(_video);
The result is a SWF that does not have the increased filesize of the assets SWC (~30mb), and obviously, the video doesn't show up.Again, the goal here is to have large media assets, such as FLVs, external from the main FLA code, but the resulting SWF to contain everything when compiled - no external SWFs at runtime. The client requires a singe SWF. Additionally, I can use a different, smaller set of assets when developing to make development faster.

I have a bunch of graphics assets in a fla, the MovieClips are linked to some classes. I export the fla as a swc , which I add to my library with the option "Merged into Code".All works great, I can create instances of my MovieClips , just by calling their classes like this.
example 1
var newMc:BaseClass = new GraphicAsset();
Now if I want do the following , Flash throws an error , GraphicsAssetClass is null!
//example 2
var GraphicsAssetClass:Class = getDefinitionByName("GraphicAsset") as Class;
The only way I can get the above line to work is to do this
//example 3
var newMc:GraphicAsset;
var GraphicsAssetClass:Class = getDefinitionByName("GraphicAsset") as Class;[code]....
where I could simply get the class by calling getDefinitionByName()like I do on example 2 , without having to resort to example 3 solution.

I'm writing a preview site that will load SWFs/images from a URL into a preview pane. However, the primary problem I'm running into is actually loading these SWFs. It seems that the object/embed tags require width/height attributes. I will not know the exact size of these SWFs; in fact, I will know absolutely nothing about them.
What I'm asking is, what is the best way to load in these SWFs? Is there a library that exists to do this? Or do I need to do it myself?

Having trouble targeting movieclips in a dynamically loaded swf. (Flash 8, Actionscript 2).I have a swf file, which contains a set of duplicated movieclips, that I am loading into another swf file (using the movieClipLoader() class), basically like this: "swfA" is loading into "swfB", and I have clips 1, 2, and 3, inside "swfA."I don't seem to be able to mouseover and click clips 1, 2, and 3, when "swfA" is loaded into "swfB". But when I run "swfA" on it's own, the clips are active and clickable.I've tried setting "this._lockroot = true;" at the top of "swfA", and tha in the duplicating script, but still no luck targeting the clips.I usually execute the duplicating script on the main swf (swfB), but I wanted to contain everything in a swf, thinking it might be simpler. But the targeting problem has me scratching my head.

how can you controll them as they are coming in? For example: i want to load three swfs but i want them to sit invisible until the user clicks a button to change visibility and see the content. I cannot seem to accomplish what I thought would be a trivial task. I installed the SWC commands extension for CS3/CS4 and I am using it exactly as prescribed to create SWC files. When I point to them through the 'build path' prefs UI of my Flex project, one of two things happens:
1. If I created the SWC in CS4, Flex immediately crashes when it reads the file. When I re-open Flex it either crashes immediately or does so when I switch to design view and try to have access to the components panel where the new SWC should appear.
2. If I created the SWC in CS3, I perform the steps in Flex, and it seems like everything is OK, but the new component simply doesn't appear in the components panel at all. Flex behaves normally otherwise.
I can import third-party SWCs just fine in Flex otherwise.
Does anyone know what may be going on? I've even dumbed down my SWC to just a single movieclip containing a fill instead of something containing Actionscript, and it still behaves the same way.

I have the following project structure: A Flex Project (SDK 3.3) Multiple SWCs with grafics and textfields that are used as components in the Flex project.
Since I have a lot of SWCs that all use the same font in dynamic textfields, I do not want to embed the font in every SWC.Instead I want to have a library (RSL?) with the font from where all the SWCs load the font.
I tried to build a library file with the fonts using the "Export for runtime sharing" feature in Flash.While it works perfectly when I stay in Flash, Flex throws an "internal build error" when I try to use these SWCs in Flex.

I got a question in need of somebody who knows a lot more internals of the Flash system than I do. My artist designs the objects I use in my games as Movie Clips in Flash CS 4. I export those Movie Clips from Flash CS 4 to Flash Builder 4 via a SWC file. In order to do this, I select "export for ActionScript" in Flash CS 4, and "Export in Frame 1".
1. If a Movie Clip has 20 frames, does Flash export 20 drawings, 1 for each frame? If not, how does it do it?
2. I heard that if I have scripts in the frames, I will definitely get more objects instantiated, thus, for many instances of the Movie Clip in my game, I will get a performance hit.
3. Is it ok to add my scripts via "addFrameScript" in the Flash Builder-side, rather than put them in Flash CS 4?

Beginners Intro to SWC files SWCs are ZIP archives with two files in them: catalog.xml - Lists all classes contained in the SWC along with their dependencies.library.swf - Contains all the actual classes So theoretically... It should be possible to load in SWC files at run time and use the classes from them, right?
You may have to unzip it first and extract out the SWF, but this arduous process could be made easier with a few helper classes. In fact, having the "catalog.xml" there may also make it easier to identify which classes are contained within (which means you don't need to guess or assume which classes are in it). Has anyone tried this yet or know of anyone else who has?
I searched Google for a bit, but most results actually were actually mislabeled, and loading the SWC in at compile time. I found nothing relevant, so asking here is much easier.

- Flash CS4 Actionscript 2.0 internal training project- Main movie is a single frame project, containing just the interface. This includes a menu listing 80+ individual "chapters" for the training series.- Each "chapter" is its own project/swf. Once the main interface loads, it should begin to play the chapters sequentially without the user selecting anything from the menu. When one chapter finishes, the next should load. If the user DOES select a chapter in the menu, it should load that SWF, and continue auto-playing from that selection forward.- Each chapter has a built-in play/rewind/ff bar, various movie clips with animations, dialogue audio track and a fairly lengthy embedded FLV movie, and therefore a preloader before each chapter is mandatory.What I have so far works, but it's embarrassingly crafted:- First frame of main movie (let's call this main.fla) contains the following code (most of this code was taken from an online tutorial):
var slideName = "modules/intro.swf";
var loader:MovieClipLoader = new MovieClipLoader();
loader.addListener(this);
[code].....
