Flash :: Flex - What Are Possible Non-code-related Reasons For A Blank Screen In Builder 4.6 Design View?

Dec 13, 2011

I was editing a very basic mobile Flex project, and after I debugged the master (application) mxml file, Design View stopped working (blank screen displayed, no Design View errors) for all files. Creating new projects, either mobile or else, or testing old, working projects, doesn't work either. Out of the related issues I've found info on, most concern earlier versions of the IDE, and deal with either Design View errors (got none), use of certain functions or custom components (I get the error even on a new project), or are solved by changing styles back-and-forth (tried already, to no avail).

I can't drag and drop components to the design area, either (a "prohibited" symbol appears and nothing happens when I drop); so I'm pretty sure it's not code-related or a bug, but probably something stupid, like a configuration issue, so I definitely need someone to take a fresh look at it.

Actionscript 3 :: Error #1006 RemoveChild Is Not A Function. Timer Delay RemoveChild

Mar 29, 2010

I'm trying to build a conditional statement that will addChild and removeChild at different Timer Delays. Before I go any further, I thought, I should mention that I'm usinig TweenMax to ease the alpha of ease Child from 1 to 0 and back during the process to imitate a fade-in/out.

I'm getting issue with only one line - inside a conditional statement.It's running "OK". The movie runs as I want it, but the remove/addChild transitions are not at the speed I want it at. I am getting an error message in the output, but other than that, the movie runs fine.

IDE :: OOP/Event Related: Transition Game Tiles?

Oct 13, 2009

I'm working on OOP skills by creating a fun Mahjong game. I made a working concept (not very OOPed yet), and am trying to get everything OOPed before its too late. I want the tiles to transition in, maybe teleport in like a Star Trek movie. The tile object is a movie clip, so it can play the transition as it is added to the stage. Tiles will be added in, in increments so there's a cool wave-like effect of teleporting.

How would I know when the tiles have finished transitioning in? Would the tiles generate an events that the game object detects, starting the game after receiving X 'finished' events? Or should I create a timer in the game object where the amount of time to wait for the transition depends on the number of tiles being added to the board?

I think I'm close, but could use any general feedback on the concept. The coding is not an issue. I'm just trying to wrap my head around things.

ActionScript 3 :: Flash Game Inventory - Design Pattern

Aug 23, 2011

I'm still studying OOP designs, so what's the best way to achieve an inventory for a simple flash game? It seems that more than one design pattern could deliver some kind of an inventory but I would lose the flexibility if I try to adapt it somehow without a good knowledge about the subject. For money to buy what is available in an inventory I thought of Singleton. If there's enough cash earned while playing the game, then one can buy new skills. Maybe decorator pattern could list many thumbnails as buttons, and clicking on it applies new features and skills to the character.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Design Class To Create A Mock Interface For A Game?

This may seem like a noobish question (and it is) but I have created some AS code to help assist in a project of mine in a level design class to create a mock interface for a game. It works fine on the first screen but once you hit any button and go to the next and then try to go back, the code breaks and I am not sure why. Ive tried multiple things to get it to work but nothing seems to help. The code I am using is

ActionScript Code:

Actionscript 3 :: Design Community Driven Server Hosting And Game Lobby

Oct 31, 2011

I want to create a 2D real time multiplayer game in the browser in Action Script that can do the following:

Client: Player logs into Account via Flash Client. Player hits 'Versus Mode' Button. A lobby with a list of online servers come up. Player joins game. Heres where the problem comes in, I want the servers to be community hosted. i.e. the player downloads and runs a server app on their own desktop for other players to join. Players then go to the website and access the browser based client to find a list of active servers.

This would be a commercial product (players buy an account to log in through the client) and each player hosted server must handle 20 live players. As the servers are not centralized and scalability is handled by the community typical solutions like SmartFoxServer licences will not work.

Flash :: "Instance Name At Design Time" Vs "Instance Name Added Dynamically" Vs "Variable Name In Related Class"

Nov 4, 2011

Say i have a movieclip named a_Mc ( ClassA ) I have a sub-movieclip named b_Mc ( ClassB )

CASE 1: Accessing the sub-movieclip b_Mc which is already present inside the a_Mc movieclip

( Since Flash IDE has "Automatic instance naming" OFF )

ClassA mentions the name of b_Mc as => var b_Mc:MovieClip;

NOTE HERE: That the variable name MUST BE same as the name of the instance on stage.

So i can access it as : trace( a_Mc.b_Mc);

ActionScript 3.0 :: Error #1063: Argument Count Mismatch

Jan 14, 2008

The very first attempt to write something in AS3.0 stumbled me. Code: play_btn.addEventListener( MouseEvent.CLICK, play ); results in runtime error "ArgumentError: Error #1063: Argument count mismatch on flash.display::MovieClip/play(). Expected 0, got 1". On one hand, everything is clear: the listener is expected to accept one argument and the play() function accepts none. One the other hand, everything starts to work fine after wrapping the call to the play() function in a trival closure, also accepting no arguments:

Code: play_btn.addEventListener( MouseEvent.CLICK, function(){ play(); } ); And as if that's not enough, the Adobe's "Programming ActionScript 3.0" document says on page 131 that "ActionScript 3.0 allows function calls to include more parameters than those defined in the function definition", which kind of implies that the initial code with the direct play() invocation is perfectly legetimate and should not lead to any error.

I keep getting an error I cannot seem to solve. Although it does not seem to influence the behavior of my file, I don't know if it will in the future.

I've already looked up the error, and it's true, there is no argument assigned within the "()" of my function, but I don't know what to put since it's a function that applies to multiple buttons and is called upon in another function. A similar function doesn't return this error. When I put "e:Event" within the "()" it returns "error 1136: Incorrect number of arguments. Expected 1.
