ActionScript 3.0 :: Getting Access To The Caller Of A Method?
Jun 23, 2009
I know it's possible to get access to the currently executing function with "arguments.callee" but is there a way to get access to the scope under which a method is being executed?

I have 2 classes representing 2 objects. From the "whoCalledMe" function, I want to find out what object called the function (without passing that information in as an argument). I've used a make-believe property, "caller", that would give me the reference I'm looking for. Is there a generic way I can get a reference to the caller from there?
package {
public class ObjectCallingTheFunction {
public var IDENTITY:String = "I'm the calling function!";

is there any way to know which method caused a certain event to be fired? For example, in NetConnection API, you can have: connection.addEventListener(NetStatusEvent.NET_STATUS, netStatusHandler); netStatusHandler is called everytime a Flash Remoting call fails for some reason: how to know which one failed?

My issue today is a DisplayObject error I'm getting when remove a child object. I have code that will launch(addChild) a video container and video controls as well as add a close button. Now the close button works fine and everything, removing the video and controls and I'm able to choose another video again, but when you click close a 2nd time I get this error: ArgumentError: Error #2025: The supplied DisplayObject must be a child of the caller.
at flash.display::DisplayObjectContainer/removeChild() So I've narrowed down the problem to where I remove the videoContainer (which holds the video object) My code to play the videos:

Here's the context of the problem, in which I will try to include as much information as possible while keeping the explanation brief.
I am trying to make a portfolio website (architectural design + concept art). Flash / programing are not my focus and this is my first go at learning the software. Due to the nature of the content and my (lack) of ability in AS3, I want the the coding to be really simple and still let the site look good. The way the site is currently structured:
1) Basic menu buttons that navigate to sections of the site (brings up a new page).
2) Example, clicking on <Graphics> takes you to a new page and a sub-menu animates in (simple motion tween for the buttons to cascade down). This animation is a movie clip placed on the main timeline.
3) On the screen is also a slideshow for all the images within <Graphics>.Instead of multiple small slideshows, I combined them all into one, so as to avoid complications with add / remove from stage. There are prev / next buttons that keep images within their sub section (ie 1->2->3->1). The sub-menu buttons are suppose to link to the start of each sub section, much like chapters on a DVD. (The slideshow is a movieclip sub-nested in the menu movieclip).

I have an object on my stage, called obj.I also have a class called "Physics" which contains a bunch of methods for physics, such as inertia, gravity, and bouncing off walls. In order to do some of these,I need access to the stage.stageWidth and stageHeight properties.My code is as follows:
public function wallBounce(obj)
{
this.stageRef = stageRef[code]...
This is supposed to check if the object's x value is greater than the stageWidth or less than 0. When I run this code it says:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
I am a semi-newbie programmer who is completely self-taught and have no clue what is causing this. I spent a bit googling it, and I think it has something to do with scopes,.

I want to create an array of strings in a text class that I can access with the main document class. Then I'll be able to populate a text field with items in the array. The purpose of this is to avoid having massive lines of text in my main document... but I can't even get my test to work. The compiler is telling me that the array (txt1) is undefined. First here's my code for the array:
//text array class:format5000

What I want to be able to do:
- click a guy to select him
- click an adjacent tile
- move selected guy to clicked tile
The way I've coded it, each instance of a guy class has a mouse even listener on him which listens for a click. When clicked, I find out the tile underneath him, and the surrounding tiles. So far, so good.
When clicked, the guy calls a method in the tile class, like tile.onClick, which tries to say: get this tile, and send it back to a method in the guy class, like moveGuy. Then moveGuy moves the guy to the tile it was told.
Problem:
From the guy class, I call a method in the tile class. To communicate between classes, the tile class method onClick must be static. But if it's static, the method can't refer to "this", because it's a method in the class only, not on each instance of tile. But I need to know which tile was clicked, and send that reference to the guy so he knows where to go.
How do you access a method from outside its class so that the method can refer to "this" instance? OR, how do I find out which tile was clicked without needing any code on each tile instance? OR... how else can this problem be solved?

Is this problem what getters & setters are for? I don't really understand how to use them yet.

I created an array of objects and put an event listener on each of them. My problem is that when the object is clicked, I want to access a method inside the object's class but I do not know how to reference its position in the array. This isn't very clear but hopefully my code will make it clearer.
This line is inside while loops and puts an event listener on every square.
[Code].....
How can I know which square has been clicked?
Note: e.target returns the following error:
ReferenceError: Error #1069: Property placeChar not found on flash.display.Sprite and there is no default value.

I am just trying to watch television episodes on my laptop. this error has been popping up for the last couple weeks for no apparent reason. At first, it also said the Flash Player didn't work with 64 bit whatever with IE8. The error said a patch was not yet made and to use IE 32 bit. I did this and am still getting the error. I have uninstalled flash player and reinstallaed it to no avail. This error led to further problems on my laptop resulting in a total crash. Fortunately, I was able to back up all my files before they disappeared. I restored the computer to a time before I started watching television programs on XFinity.com (about a couple months ago) and it seemed corrected for a while and then the error started again. I am given the option to continue or dismiss. either button allows me to continue watching the program, but then repeatedly appears even when I quit XFinity and watch the shows directly from the network websites.
