ActionScript 3.0 :: Lighten / Darken Uint-formatted Colors
Apr 1, 2009
Is there an easy way to multiply a color that is stored in an uint? Basically what I would like to do would be applying a colorTransform-Object (like ColorTransform(1.2,1.2,1.2,1,0,0,0,0))to the uint and get the new value in return, but it will not work. Will I have to convert it into RGB first or am I missing something here?

Is there a way to darken or lighten an image or actually any display object on mouse over and then restore it back on mouse out? I would prefer to use filters if possible just because I am already applying a filter on mouse over and removing it on mouse out. I would then be able to add it to the filters list. If not that's fine. In my code I'm using a Flex 4 Spark Image component.

This is probably an easy question but with the upgrade to CS5 when you go to the color pallette - the color you are using you used to be able to lighten or darken it. Now that is gone. Is there a way to get it back or was it removed?

I'm working with several components that take color as a uint, but the colors I have are in the format of "#161616". I'm not sure what the relation between the 2 types of colors are or how to go from one to another.It doesn't have to be an actionscript solution. I have only a small number of these colors, so can be done manually too.

This swf is just a test of a site I am trying to eventually make. I was wondering if someone could take a look at it and tell me how I can make the links that aren't relavent to the page dim out a little bit. I will attach the FLA and the SWF. Just click on one of the links in the begining to launch the tween navbar i set up. I just want to be able to make the links that aren't in the middle, be lighter.
I tried putting a semi transparent box in the corners on top of it, but since it's on top, it makes it so I can't click the links.

Photoshop and Fireworks both have some nice filters. When you put one bitmap over the other, the first bitmap can act as filter. For example, the white pixels of the top bitmap lighten the pixels of the bottom bitmap. Is there any way to apply this in as3? What I am trying to accomplish: I have a large single-color bitmapdata object. I want to overlay perlin noise and lighten/darken the single-color bitmap to give it some random/natural look.

I wonder what kind of class(es) I should use to accomplish this task. I have two predefined colors, 0xFF0000 and 0x00FF00 (red and green), and I would like to set a number of gradiants of colors between these two colors. [code]This generates a random color, but I don't want to generate just any random one. Does anyone know what kind of color class I should use to accomplish my task objective?

difference between int, uint and num... when would it be better to use one and not the other type thing?

i want my uint to be 0,1, or null.
it appears i cannot assign NaN to a uint, but i can with a number. why is that?
Code:
var num:Number;
trace (num) //NaN
var u:uint;
trace (u); //0
I want an undefined place holder for the uint. In my case i suppose I'll use the number 2 and try to remember it means NaN to me.

Does anyone know how to cast a string into a uint?[code]...
But i keep getting an error stating that there is a mismatch in variable types or i get a value of '65280' when I trace myUint.I understand that uint is a positive integer but i need to accept a string for the colour value and need to convert it to a string for use.

I am trying to encode certain values that I receive from keyboard event. Basically I want to check if a certain key combination has been pressed or not, so for that I am converting the key codes into sequence/pattern and store it in an object and a value(function) against each code sequence. Now I have to use four bytes and in first byte(MSB) I've to store shift, alt, ctrl respectively and in the last(LSB) I have to store the keycode of the key pressed.
Here is the code:
private function m_encodeValue(key:String, Ctrl:Boolean = true, Alt:Boolean = true, Shift:Boolean = false):uint {
var encodedValue:uint;
encodedValue = uint(Shift) << 2 | uint(Alt) << 1 | uint(Ctrl);
encodedValue = encodedValue | (uint(key.toUpperCase().charCodeAt(0)) << 24);
return encodedValue;
}

I am new to the concept of Bitwise operations, and was messing around with some examples today. Everything seemed clear up until the point I tried to make a function to perform a circular bitshift on a uint:
private function rotateLeft(value : uint, shift : int) : uint {
if ((shift &= 31) == 0)
return value;
return (value << shift) | (value >> (32 - shift));
}
I was trying to shift a colour value (e.g. 0xFF0000) and expecting something along the lines of 0x0000FF, when in actual fact I was getting 0xFF000000 (which is correct, due to the length of a uint) - the most significant bytes are for the alpha value.

It is simple to format text with setTextFormat. But is there any affective method for retrieving all the styling that has been made on the text? getTextFormat is known but it doesn't work on text that varies in formatting.

I'd like to implement the following logic:
function setMyValue (myVar:int = undefined):void
{
if (myVar == undefined)
{
[code]....
So if the value is supplied, use it. If not, generate it. Seems simple enough.Problem is that AS3 doesn't like this. 'undefined' gets coerced into '0', so myVar is never undefined. I've tried variations with NaN, null, etc, but nothing has worked.

I need to load data from an xml file.The data i'm loading has basic formatting like italic, bold. The formatting is applied in the xml file and the other formatting is in a css file.I have used code from a tutorial which loads both xml and the css file. The code works fine, if I load the entire xml in my text field.If I want to load data from one of the xml node which has Italic tag then it returns a null value.

I have some text fields which have to be displayed with a style I have previously loaded from a CSS document. There are two choices to choose from, but both have some hitch I cannot resolve by myself:
- If I decide to embed a font and use it along with the other CSS properties, I don't know how to associate this font to the text field, because if I do this: myTextField.embedFonts = true, no text is displayed.
- If I decide not to embed fonts, so that I use the CSS font-family property, I've checked that the text is not displayed the same way in different monitors: while in my PC it is displayed smooth and sharp, in another appears kind of jagged. Moreover the animations of non-embedded fonts are not the best option (the text must have an animation which includes a mix of fading and scale).

People have asked how to make a text editor with css formatting before and the answer has always been with reference to the manual - "it can't be done".But what if you didn't accept that something can't be done?I'm thinking some sort of translation class to convert between textformat and css.Or bin the css for the moment of editing and then reapply when the user has finished.

Code:
function buttonModeTrue(event: Event):void {
trace(event.target);

So this code works fine in terms of rendering and formatting text:
PHP Code:
var ss:StyleSheet = new StyleSheet();
var H1:Object = new Object();
H1.fontSize = 24;
[Code]....
But the fonts are not embedded. If I want to reduce the textfield's alpha or rotate it or some such operation, I need to embed the fonts.
If I uncomment tf.embedFonts = true; then the text disappears.
So what's the next step? I'm familiar with various ways of embedding fonts --using fontName with a Library font, or embedding using the Flex SDK in FlashDevelop. But I don't know how to approach either of those in the case of text formatted via CSS.

<headline2 width="500"><spane class='Headline'>your collateral
get info about it here
How would I retrieve the URL contained in the a href attribute? I have tried a number of ways: @a, @ahref, @href, as well as CDATA.@a, CDATA.@ahref, CDATA.@href and am stumped.
