ActionScript 3.0 :: Pass Names To Functions?
Sep 12, 2010
I am trying to set up a function that makes the hit areas for buttons. The text is visible, but the hit area rectangle underneath the text is not, but detects the hit; my previous version, the mouse had to be over the actual descenders and ascenders of text to register, to the rectangle makes it easier to click. I have the invisible part of the hit areas visible right now, by commenting out the line to make them invisible, but the end result will have them invisible. Instead of explicitly defining every rectangle, I am successfully passing the x,y,height, and width params to newbut function. But I also want to pass the names for each button, otherwise it seems to just change the coordinates on the same button. I am trying to pass the names as strings, but not working. Not sure what to do!!! PS this is my first time on this or any other Flash board, so please be gentle.[code]...

Im adding lot of simple functions to prototypes of top level objects ( Object , Array , String ...) and have 2 questions :
Is possible to add functions to top level's classes in compile-time ?
If not , is there a way to allow this functions to compile ? I dont like to turn off strict mode
ex:
string.removeWhiteSpace();
string.sliceStr("." , "end");
textField.scrollBottom();
this return compile-time error , cause there is no such function , i have to write it in braces :
string["removeWhiteSpace"]();
string["sliceStr"]("." , "end");
textField["scrollBottom"]();
and i like to aviod it )

Is it possible to pass variable as arguments for a function? I wish to update a boolean variable via a function, by passing the name of the variable to the function, like so:
Code:
function ENVSegment(curSegment:Boolean, nextSegment:Boolean) {
curSegment = false;
nextSegment = true;
} var attackSegmentIsRunning:Boolean = false;
var releaseSegmentIsRunning:Boolean = false;
[Code] .....
Much shorter, and easier to understand. Also, less repetition of the same blocks of code over and over...

I am using Flash CS5 and I have created a large, rarely changing framework that I don't want to be recompiled every time I use it in my projects.I must be doing something wrong because the "auto-complete" functionality doesn't show the names of the parameters of the functions.For example, I have a function:
public class Hey {
public function show(name:String, num:Number, data:Array):void {...}
}

I know PHP, JavaScript and AJAX. All of these other languages easily allow me to pass variables through a function, but I can't seem to work out how to do it in ActionScript 3. As you can see from the code below, I have created a variable called 'flag', this variable is set to 'notAdded'. However, once the function is called, I want to change the variable to 'added'. This for some reason does not work, the variable update only works within the function itself. There seems to be no global scope for functions.
Code:
var flag:String = "notAdded";
bobRunning.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP , bobRunningUp);
if (flag=="notAdded"){function bobRunningUp(event:MouseEvent):void{ bobRunning.width = 30;
bobRunning.height = 30;
flag = "added";
}}trace(flag);

I'm starting to get a handle on some AS3 basics in terms of building nested classes or packages or whatever the proper syntax terminology is.
Now I have two instance functions:
1 - parseXML
2 - loadImage
I have these 2 functions working together using an eventHandler. Once the XML is parsed the aim is to load an image. Sounds pretty common right?
When the image loading commands are in the parseXML function they work fine. But then when I put the image loading commands in separate function titled loadImage and trigger it using an eventHandler onComplete, it loses my variable and instance definitions.

I don't know if this is possible with Actionscript 3. What I want to do is have a loseAll(); function that calls other function that in turn close sections of an application. I would be easier to have all the close functions in the closeAll() function and then pass a reference to the once that i don't want to be called. something like this.

I have been working on a Flash movie that loads variable data from an external XML file and dynamically displays the item names in a menu which may then be clicked to display other dynamically-loaded content that corresponds to the menu item that was clicked. I have now come to a standstill in the project as there is something I'd like to achieve but simply cannot work out how. This is my first attempt at working with XML in Flash and one of my early attempts at using variables. What I'm trying to achieve is; once the user has viewed the item's content, they can simply click "next" and "previous" buttons to display all of the content for the next or previous items in the XML document.
I know it probably sounds simple and I'm sure some of you could achieve this in 5 minutes (!) but I can't get my head around some of the coding. I assume previousSibling and nextSibling would come into play here as well as some sort of functions which access arrays of data for the previous and next items, but I'm just not sure how to correctly put these things to use. Rather than post my code and example images of the stage up here on the forums, I've created an html page here: [URL]

There are two files in my actionscript project named "TestAPP", TestAPP.as and Draggable.as
TestAPP.as:
package {
import flash.display.Sprite;
import flash.display.Stage;[code].....
In "my actionscript theory", I'm supposed to see a circle that follows the mouse when I click it. (The draggable is not fully implemented) But the circle doesn't even budge .how to access the main class's stage property. I've googled for it, but still no progress.

We've got an Illustrator file with something over 1,000 layers. We're trying to import this into Flash and keep the layer names intact, such that they become the names of the movie clips that are imported for each layer and can be used programmatically. (It is a diagram and arrows, boxes, etc all have callout names that will eventually allow them to link to a database.)As near as I can tell, the Import dialog will NOT pass this info across between the two parts of the dialog.

I started a thread about a reference to a symbol House, in the output window, which was: House_1. A lot of people said some useful things about that. All day I've been thinking about it, and I came to the conclusion that I don't understand things, at a very basic level.
Consider:I make a movieclip which I give the Symbol name Drawer. (I don't export it for AcitonScript.)On the stage I manually place two instances of this Symbol. The first one I give the Instance Name drawer (in the properties panel). The second one I leave nameless.Now if I trace the names of both these clips, by
trace(this.getChildAt(0).name);
trace(this.getChildAt(1).name);
the output window gives me
drawer
instance2
Now I know that the so-called "instance name" which I gave in the Properties Panel (drawer) is, in reality, a variable name which Flash gives my first instance behind the scenes. And instance2 is a name that Flash gives my second instance. What exactly the nature of that name is, I do not know.My point is: both names (drawer and instance2) are the .name property of these movieclips. Otherwise I could not have traced them through asking for the .name property, in the above. Yet only the first of these two can be manipulated:
drawer.x can be set;
instance2.x can (as we know) not be set.
But...why? What is the real difference between these two kinds of names? How can they both be the .name property of their underlying movieclip, yet be of such a different nature? What IS the nature of the instance2 name? If it's a String, how come the .name property of one movieclip can be a variable name, while the .name property of another (but identical) movieclip is a String?
I've searched every bit of web page on the net I could find. But it looks as if nobody addresses this issue. We all just work with it - but it makes no bloody sense. A name property = a name property, you'd think. Whether Flash set it or I set it should not make a difference. The x property of a clip, for example, does not change in nature according to who set it - me or Flash.So, again, just to emphasize the problem: how can a property (the name property) of a movieclip change in NATURE depending on who set it? After it's been set, shouldn't the name property of a clip be of exactly the same nature as the name property of another clip?

I've got a project thats getting a bit big, so Im taking the actionscript out into separate as files. I want all the basic functions to be in BasicFunctions.as and the make a library for more specific functions. I find that a lot of people use the import statement but I cant get that to work with a simple Hello World trace, yet the include statement works fine (see attached). I understand that import/include work differently, but which is the better method? If import, then is that heavier to work with. Any rate, what's the best way to organise code when it gets to the 1000+ lines?

I'm trying to find a way to have global functions in my as project, similar to how flash does with stuff like the util functions (describeType()...), where you can just call the function wherever you need it. For example:
[Code]...
So when I call Test(), it prints out "hello world" fine. My problem comes in that I can't change the name of the Test function, and I can't add any other functions without compiler errors. Is it possible to have a load of global functions in one file, or do I have to split them up into separate files like in the example? Also, I know that I can make a Global class and call static functions like Code: Global.doSomething() but I'd like to know if there's a way to do it as flash does it (describeType(), getDefinitionByName(), etc), or rather, how does flash do it?

I'm having to pass data (originally read via an XML file loaded by the parent class) to a child class upon instantiation, and I can't decide which is the better method.I could parse the XML in the parent and throw the data into an Object and pass that object to the child class....or just pass the part it needs as an XMLList and let the child class do the parsing.Seems like a trivial decision, yes, but I'm not sure of longer-term implications.
