ActionScript 3.0 :: Removing Event Listeners & Resetting Game

I'm trying to develop a catching game, just for a bit of fun and learning experience. I've been bouncing between tutorials and I've finally come to a point where I can't get any further. After you catch three sandwhiches, you lose and it takes you to an end screen, however, I'm unable to stop the listeners from being called, and when the game restarts, the food falls, but you're no longer able to catch it or keep score.

I have a basic question about manually removing event listeners in actionscript 3.If I have a function like:

How do I remove the event listeners when the saveDone function is called? Normally I just change the "add" to "remove" like:

f.removeEventListener(Event.COMPLETE,saveDone);

However, f is a local variable, and I can't get to it after the doStuff function ends.

I'm trying to do something that I'm not sure if it's possible. I have to add or remove multiple listeners that will trigger the same three methods (onComplete, onError and showProgress). I was trying to do something like this:

I was just wondering--and it's probably an obvious question really--if I make an object null and that object had one or more event listeners registered, are the listeners removed?

ive made a flash website containing 5 pages all accessed via flash buttonson one of the page ive tried loading a external swf file and then added event listeners to each of the buttons so when a new page is selected the swf file doesnt continue to play in the background on the other pagesthis works, however when i then try to change page again this error is displayed:ArgumentError: Error #2025: The supplied DisplayObject must be a child of the caller.at flash.display:isplayObjectContainer/removeChild()atValleyViewingWebsite_fla::MainTimeline/btnClick()below is the code im using:

Professional :: Removing Event Listeners On Leaving A Frame

I have l modded some code that I am really happy with, it makes buttons bounce around for the user to try to click on when entering a certain frame.. I notice tha the code adds eventlisteners ENTER_FRAME to make this work, when you leave that frame there are now problems with null objects becuase the listeners are still on but the objects are not there anymore..
 
Ok so attempted solution - I can use a currentLabel on the main timeline to check if the correct frame is reached then use a function if (label is x) put listeners on else take them off... works but then I have to have these objects hidden on the timeline  and then add visible=true/false to my framelabel listener.. This works but part of my functionality here is that these movieclips that move are buttons that the user clicks on and they explode and dissapear- but now they dont because I have a code that says on that frame they should be visible..
  
The only thing I can think of is to have a blank frame at the end of the explode and put a stop on it.  Then add a gotoAndPlay(1) into my frame label code.  Seems very ugly, you guys got a better way?  Can I remove eventlisteners on leaving a frame?  Is there a code like LEAVE_FRAME??

I'm adding and removing stage event listeners I am relatively new to AS 3 and have been building a liquid layout site unfortunately I do not have a strong grasp of classes and have been doing all of my scripting on the main timeline with encapsulated script within MC's.

basically I am calling on the same functions over and over and those are mostly resize functions which I have added StageEventListeners on the appropriate frames to listen for resize events on that stage now as of now I have literally dozens of these scattered about the site. when testing my site things are running fairly smoothly however I keep getting error messages in my output window that go a little something like this.

I've created a drop down list and populated it with dynamic buttons. (I made a DropDown_btn class with a dynamic text field in it and then filled the button text from an xml file). On rollover I tint the button blue and then set the tint back to black on rollout. When you click on the button I'd like it to stay blue until a different button is clicked.

I thought on CLICK I'd run a function like this:

...and then I need to addEventListeners back to any button that doesn't have them and set that button back to black. I could do this by looping through an array of the buttons but I can't figure out how to access them as objects.

I also gave them each a property of "buttonValue" when I loaded them so I can access event.currentTarget.buttonValue (which in this case is a number from 1-5) but once again I can't figure out how I might leverage this information.

I'm having trouble reseting a drag & drop game. It is a movie clip with two pages: start_pg and game_pg. On start_pg is a start button (start_btn) that goes to game_pg. On game_pg is button (end_btn) that goes back to start_pg. Both buttons share the same layer, so I made each invisible when not of its page. The game works fine, but when the end_btn is clicked, all movie clips that have been dropped, stay there.How can I go back to start_pg and reset all movie clips to their original starting point?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Completely Resetting A Flash Game?

I've programmed an entire game from scratch, without using class files, and there's no menu yet, and I'm not sure how to reset the game without using class files or resetting every single thing manually.
 
I'm making a Flash tower defense game with a friend; I'm doing all the code. I'd never used Flash or Actionscript before, so I started off directly programming the gameplay, to figure out if I'd be able to do it. I've done everything from scratch so I didn't know where to start or the "right way" of doing anything, so I figured out as I went along, which went much better than I expected.
 
So now I've got the gameplay almost completely programmed, the art assets are essentially finished and game looks great and runs (reasonably) well (and the occasional performance problems are due to graphics rather than code), etc. I didn't know how to use class files in AS3 when I started making the game, and when I read up on them and realized you can't import the class files into the project and must open and edit them separately, I was livid and decided not to use them; I was happy with how the coding was going anyway.
 
So now we've got a game where as soon as you run it, it goes straight to the field and the game starts; we haven't implemented a menu yet. We've reached the point of playtesting and it's becoming a huge nuisance having to quit the SWF and reopen or recompile it every time we want to restart the game, so it's time to program a "Reset" button. I thought this would be as simple as making the stage go to a different frame and back to the first frame, but that doesn't work, so now I'm utterly stuck. It looks like the easiest way to reset a game is to load the entire "game" as an object (or something to that effect, I forget exactly what I've read), then you can unload and reload the game object to reset it? It also looked like it would require class files which I'm hoping to avoid.
 
I don't think it's feasible to manually remove everything from the stage, reset all the variables, and delete all event listeners and references so everything is reset/garbage collected properly.
 
Thinking about it more, I'm also not sure how I'm going to get a menu to load before the game in its current state. Maybe I can move all of the gameplay to the second frame and make the menu on the first frame?So, is it possible to reset the game without involving class files?

Something isn't getting cleared. Every time the thumbs are removed, there's a slight increase in the cpu baseline - something is piling up in memory.

almost every single one of my classes, starts with the same method. An event listener in the constructor for EVENT_ADDED_TO_STAGE. Then i do all my actual intialising in a beginclass function that listener runs.I've not generally been removing these listeners though. i never thought it would make a difference since i'm only adding these objects once, but i wonder if there's a performance element. it could be for example, that all of these listeners add an extra check each, ehenever any object is added to the display list.

An odd thing is happening for me, my eventlisteners only fire off once then they seem to stop working.

This thing is a movieclip that slides up the parent movieclip and another movieclip within mc slides it down. They only work once.

So I've gotten into using my own as Classes, and have an interesting question.
My main swf calls a php script that gets data from a mysql database which is returned as XML. Part of that data that is retrieved is a filepath to a jpg image. It then takes that filepath and other information, and passes it to my external class, the "news story" class.

All fine and good. Then, the "news story" class uses a loader to load that image along with some text, organize it, and voila, you've got your own very pretty "news story". (I'm extending the MovieClip class here, though I suppose it doesnt matter)

Now, my main swf uses this component to load multiple of these "news stories". The problem is, theres that load time for the image. The main swf is loading them all one at a time, because they are putting each one together on their own.

The key here is that it be dynamic. So, since we don't know how much text is in each "news story", we also therefore don't know it's height. What I'm doing is creating each story in the main swf, pushing it into a "news story" array, adding an event listener to each ones' loader, and when the event listener is triggered, I want it to go to the 'add content' function where it sets the news story's Y value based off the position and height of the previous story that was added (stacking them, obviously). This makes sense, because otherwise it'd add them all on top of each other and it'd be a jumbled mess.

The problem is, the event listener is on the loader object INSIDE the component actionscript. So, how do I figure out which news story to set the Y value for? Because the eventlistener is listening to the loader, not the class. I hope this makes sense AT ALL. Here is the code:

Lately I've been twitching in the back of my head wondering just how many references to objects that I'm making, and whether or not they are getting GC'd or not.My question in this sense refers to event listeners and whether or not they are removed in certain cases where you get rid of an object. Two examples:

First, and I think this one is an easy one... when you create an object that adds an event listener to itself INSIDE it's own methods (e.g. this.addEventListener(e:Event, function)), when you REMOVE that object (this), do it's event listeners disappear too? I can only say yes, because they are referencing THAT object and are INSIDE that object.

So I think that question answers itself (but I'd love to know if the truth says otherwise).

But secondly, if you add an event listener to an object from a sibling or parent object, and then remove the object, does that event listener stick around, therefore maintaining a reference to that object and keeping it in memory? And is that the concept that people keep referring to of 'weak' event listeners? E.g. someChildObject.addEventListener(e:Event, function)Also, are event listeners by default strong or weak?

And I am assuming that 'yes', it DOES keep the reference. Which, if you are a n00b programmer like me, you probably are all like, 'aww sh*t damn, how am I supposed to make sure that my objects are getting thrown in the garbage collector's mouth of goodness every once in a while?

I didn't like the dynamically drawn submit and reset buttons, so I added my own MCs(my 'buttons') to the stage.I tried modifying the code and took out the dynamically drawn buttons..However, I cant figure out how to add Event Listeners to the buttons which exist on the stage--Im getting undefined errors...[code]...
