I'm a complete Flex/Flash noob, running Adobe Flash Builder 4 Beta 2. I have a main component that needs to be able to call several popups, each mostly the same except for one function and a few labels. Obviously, I'd prefer to be able to define this function and change those labels when calling the popup instead of having tons of .mxml files with nearly the same code, I just don't know how to do it. I figured out how I can change the labels, but not sure how to redefine the function.For simplicity's sake, let's say my code looks like this:

I'm trying to make children of a tile and put them in their respective locations. To do that, I need to know what kind of tile is to be created, but if I just use my old method:[code]I will have to use a chunk of code like this for every single imaginable tile. Obviously, that is not efficient! So I'm trying to optimize it by having what tile type is to be posted saved in a string, then using the string to refer to what child is to be created, something like below:[code]how to make the above code work. Surely, there is a way to do this?

I have an action listener :myText.addEventListener(TextEvent.LINK,linkClickHandler); As according to this, i need to write an event handler function seperate to handle the text link event.Now my requirement is i need to write that function in the same line isntead of giving its name.ie, something like mytext.addEventListenet(TextEvent.LINK, function(event: TextEvent) {....code comes here....});

I have been building my website using a simple mouse event click system that makes movie clips play at specifically names keyframes. it took me a bit, but I got it right and the code was simple. here is an example of the code that works:

Pretty simple stuff. but now I am working on a paid project for someone, and it is a bit more complicated in scope, but essentially I would be using the same code over and over again. it's a glorified slide show. but I ran into a problem. I used this code, which is the same (with different names and mouse event) as the one above.

Its telling me that "Function Light_Type(event.MouseEvent):void" is wrong with this message "1071: Syntax error: expected a definition keyword (such as function) after attribute Function, not Light_Type." I may be wrong, but from what I can read in it, it's telling me that the function I named about "Light_Type" can't be found...
I tried many way to solve this error in mxml but failed anyway:
"Cannot resolve attribute 'colorChanged' for component type com.colorPicker.controls.colorclasses.ColorMap. AdvancedColorChooser.mxml"

How should I define the "colorChanged"? Should I define colorChanged as an event in ColorMap.as? Like this,

But I got syntax error parsing the mxml file.
How could I create a function that returns an array of attribute values.like

In Actionscript 2 I find that I cannot have a "private function set" without returning the error "A member attribute was used incorrectly." If I change it to "public function set" I'm fine but that defeats the goal of trying to protect the function from setting externally

View 2 RepliesI am having trouble parsing some xml that has a few attribute names with : characters in them. The compiler is not throwing any errors and when I trace my complete xml object out it is all there, however when I try to trace out any element or node it keeps comming up undefined. I removed the attribute names with : characters in them and everything works fine. I cant seem to target the attributes either to delete them.

EX:

Except, that I would like to add a Custom tag, like "randNum" so that the tag user could input some number, or rather, a flash movie could generate a tag with a number already put in...Basically, heres a really basic version of the idea.There is a Flash Movie.In the movie, you can input text into a textfield.Upon finishing your message, you click a button "save".
The flash movie then:
1. Comes up with a random number unique to the message.
2. Assigns that number to a variable... "randNum".
3. Saves message as a xml file to the server as "filename" + randNum.
4. Outputs into a textfield a generated HTML tag that a user can post on myspace and such so that it will load in the flash movie.
Except... in the tag, there will be a custom attribute. If the random number variable "randNum" was 00112233, the custom attribute will be 00112233.
EX:
<embed src = "somefile.swf" width = "550" height = "400" randNum = "00112233">
So when the movie opens, it retrieves that randNum from the tag and can use it inside flash. How can this be done? Sorry this post was so long, but I wanted everyone to understand the concept.
I want to be able to get my var from my XML file. But when I add another node in my XML file, let's say its called <picNum>3</picNum> I can't seem to get it into my flash file? I only want one number under each <subnumber> node if thats possible?
I have this var in my .fla.

View 1 RepliesI'm wanting to use an XML file to define swfaddress deeplinking buttons so that "next" and "previous" buttons can be easily changed out by the client without having to edit the .FLA file.
In other words the .FLA file will have a series of labeled keyframes "frame_01," "frame_02," and so on the "next" button will have code in it that parses an xml file and inserts the correct frame for the deeplinking.

I know it's possible (and the answer must be under my nose) but I am at a loss as to how to accomplish this:I have 5 movie clips on the stage, and their instance names are in one array. I then have an array with hexidecimals that I want to assign the colors to the movie clip. So, in essence clipArray[0] would obtain hueArray[0] and so on and so forth. Here is the small code snippet I am working with.

View 4 RepliesI have a MovieClip with buttons inside that basically slides left/right based on mouse movement. Now everything works, I defined a hitTest for the MC movement but I need to reduce the zone where moving the mouse the MC slides.

Now my problem is here this.hitTest(_root._xmouse,_root._ymouse,false)) I tried to change the _ROOT._XMOUSE,_ROOT._YMOUSE,FALSE with the instance name of another empty MC called hit_mc just to have a sort of a hit mask but didnt work.

On a different keyframe, I have my button labled "btn_clickArea1." When I run the movie I get the error "Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference."My guess is because the button is on a different keyframe than the actionscript. However, I have four buttons that will need to be constantly updated, so I want the actionscript all in one place to easily update them. Is there a good way to get this to work?
i have a red rectangle. On top of this rectangle is a bitmapped (not vector unfortunately) pattern fill that needs to include some white/transparent pixels that should show the red color of the rectangle. How do you define this in SVG, if possible while avoiding the use of masks? The 'transparent' pixels keep coming up white instead of red.
