ActionScript 3.0 :: Defining Functions In A Separate .as File?

I would like to know if this is actually possible in AS3. I'm not really fluent in Java-style programming, but very used to C++'s .cpp and .h file system. Right now my functions are defined where my class is defined, so as you can imagine, my classes look incredibly untidy and disorganized.

I'm working on an mp3 player. It makes use of a custom scrollbar I found here: [URL]

I've gotten it to work so far, but there is one bit I would like to add. I would like it to scroll to specific y-coords when a button is clicked. The code for the scrollbar is all in an external AS file, which is referred to by an exported movieclip in the main fla.

how I would go about referring to this file, or just some other method of doing this? I'll paste the AS code as well as the basic fla code.

I'm having a strange problem setting variables in movie clips from another (parent timeline). I run the following code from the parent movie clip to target child movie clips it contains.

setVars = function (clip, value) {
clip.val1 = value;
clip.val2 = 0;

I am trying to set variables in a movie clip targetted by the 'clip' argument in the setVars function but they are being traced as undefined. However, setting the function works fine. I have also tried manually defining the variables in the movie clip and am still unable to change them externally from the setVars Function.

What I am trying to do is kind of odd, but I am wondering if anyone can come up with a clever way to do what I want to do. Basically, I want to re-define a named function at runtime. I can do this with anonymous functions, but I can't figure out a way to do it for named functions. I want to do this so that I can implement a "spy" functionality on an object for a testing framework (a port of Jasmine to Flex).

Take, for instance, this class:

if defining variable types in function parameters gives any speed boost.

is there any performance difference between above functions. in theory compiler should be able to manage memory more efficiently when knowing what data to expect, but is it so in flash

I�m trying to use Listeners to capture the MouseUp event based on Helen Triolo�s sample at [URL]I reused her code and loaded the listener�s array (with MC names that will listen to the MU event) from a textfile.My problem is that I don�t have these MCs on the _root. They�re located deep in the MC hierarchy, this way: MCComponent-->MC1-->MC2-->MCs I want to address for listening (I have about 250 MCs in this level of depth which I want to to address for listening)So, when defining the MouseUp function for each MC to respond to, I couldn�t address the MCs. I tried in different ways without any result.

This is the code:

Is there any way of making this work? Is there something missing in this code ? Note: I cannot put these MCs on the root because of other functionalities that they need to accomplish...By the way..., what about RollOver and RollOut ? Can they be captured too ? i'm kind of beginner/intermediate level (more so beginner i'd say) at AS3, and i'm trying to make a tower defence style game... ATM i'm using internal code, but would it be better to switch to external?Anyway, the problem is, at the moment i'm not sure how to impelment a way of saying, if an enemy spawn hit tests "icearea" then just trace ("in range"); but i get errors no matter where i insert the equivlent code...[code]

I've managed to create a button which on MOUSE_DOWN scales its parent object- it works just like windows in your OS, where you grab the corner and can change the scale of the window.

Here's how I've done it, (minus the MOUSE_DOWN listener)

However, it throws the error, "Access to undefined property 'scaleMC'" on the removeEventListener line. My thought was to put another listener for mouse up inside the first, but that sounds wrong

I have just started learning AS3 (2-3 weeks) and I have to say its very enjoyable!I am trying to make a function that pulls in values to save me writing 15 separate functions!I have a "street mc" which has 15 "house mc's" inside.When the user hovers over a house I want the resident to appear above the house.The house instance name is house1 and there is a mc in the library linked using the MrsRoy() class.This is my code so far:

I am trying to load various swfs into a main swf. The initial swf loads in by default, the others load when buttons are clicked. All of the buttons also call a lengthy function called loadpic which appears later in the code - Currently the buttons load in the swfs as required, however the swfs are always behind the initial default swf. Is there a way to add removeChild to the buttons? I have tried creating seperate functions for each button and added the line removeChild(); however doing that means I would also have to repeat all of the later functions as well. If I add removeChild(); without placing it in a function the default swf doesn't show at all.

I'm stuck with defining a getURL function while loading an external XML file.
 
I have a Flash AS2.0 file and I've made it CMS driven. The content for everything in the SWF file is loaded from an XML file which resides on the same server. I've defined all other XML variables and I'm able to successfully parse them inside a holder MC I have in my Flash file. Some of the many variables I have are name, caption, thumbnail img, large img, etc... I've also defined the XML file with a 'Link' that points to a URL relative to each image it loads.
 
I'm unable to define the function in Flash to retrieve the URL from 'Link' parsing value stored in my XML file.
 
I tried defining a function called getLink in actions layer of my Flash file:

getLink = function () {
getURL('Link[ID]','_blank');
};
 
The ID is loaded in the beginning of the Flash file - based on the number of values available in XML file. All other functions work, except this getURL function.

I'm trying to find a way to have global functions in my as project, similar to how flash does with stuff like the util functions (describeType()...), where you can just call the function wherever you need it. For example:

So when I call Test(), it prints out "hello world" fine. My problem comes in that I can't change the name of the Test function, and I can't add any other functions without compiler errors. Is it possible to have a load of global functions in one file, or do I have to split them up into separate files like in the example? Also, I know that I can make a Global class and call static functions like Code: Global.doSomething() but I'd like to know if there's a way to do it as flash does it (describeType(), getDefinitionByName(), etc), or rather, how does flash do it?

Is it possible to export text from a text field, which has been created in Flash and export it into an external file such as a text file or Word document?The idea is that information will be collected by the user into a text field within the swf. Hopefully, this information can then be exported into an external file which will allow the user to work on and edit at a later stage. It needs to be a separate editable document. Is this possible? ActionScript 3.0 :: Assign 5 Separate Dynamic Text Fields To 5 Separate Buttons?

What I need to do is assign 5 separate dynamic text fields to 5 seperate buttons and at the same time to those same five buttons i would like to add 5 images that i would  be able to change merely by swapping out the images in the file theyre in on the server.I would also like to get a nice transition between the images...ALSO i want to dynamically load the images for the buttons that will be used for switching from picture to picture(which im thinking i will be able to do after i know the how to do point the aforementioned things.) 

Through tutorials I've found around the net I've been able to get most of the parts together... but i get lost because what they show you for AS2 they don't for AS3 and vice versa, at least that ive seen.so... I guess my question is... would i need to set up 5 seperate dynamic text fields on the stage and then set each one of them to one of the corresponding button. If so what AS code would i need to use to do so.  And if not what would i need to do?
 
The other part of the question would be I know about the UILoader... would i be able to use it as my buttons and images, if so would i need 5 seperate ui loaders for both the Thumbnail buttons and the images or is there a way that would be better to do it?  and once i do that would i do the transitions using frames and tweens like with AS2?

I believe I am using AS2, I have cobbled some script together from the internet and it seems to be mostly working, but there is one issue I have.Okay here goes with my explanation. I have an SWF that loads a random quote from a txt file which is located on the same server as the SWF file. The quote has an 'a href' tag around the text so that when clicked it will load a URL. - This is all working fine! Here is the problem:I would like to use the same SWF file on a separate server (server 2), that then calls the quotes from to the txt file on server 1. I have added the complete path to the txt file, but when i run the SWF on server 2, it gives me an error. Here is the script I am using in the FLA file.

I am currently wondering if it is possible to load a swf that is sitting on another file server. I.e. I currently have a custom play bar swf which is embedded on a website (behind the company's firewall) which then loads swf content (currently in the same folder on the website server). The problem I have is bandwidth between remote sites is limited and streaming the swf content from the website server is not an option, however we do have a DFS set up to push all the swf content out to local file servers.

I have tried using a file:// path which works if you create a windows projector file however it doesn't work when embedded onto a website as it seems to try to access via http which the file servers are not set up for. So is it possible to get the play bar swf to load the swf content sat on a remote file server?

I am designing a website with html pages and flash pages. When the user open a flash page (embedded in an html page) i would want to have a preload script. I found a couple of them but they all need to start at the first frame and have a go to and play script after. So my problem is that I already have an important script that make a image follow my mouse and the script needs to be on the first frame to. Is there any way to have both or maybe to have the preloader on a separate file or even change the way my script is written ?I am open to any ideas, here's the script I already need;

If I create a new flash AS3 file and create two blank keyframes in my actions layer I can add actions to each keyframe separately no problem. I can then easily switch between the actions frames from the menu bar on the left of the actions input panel. However if I try and do this on any of my projects i've been working on for a while when I create a new blank keyframe in the actions layer and try to add actions to it, I get sent straight back to my first actions keyframe and not a nice blank page. Can I even apply seperate actions to seperate keyframes?
