ActionScript 3.0 :: Eclare A Variable Type That Is The Same Name As The Current Class?
Feb 3, 2009
How do you declare a variable type that is the same name as the current class in a different package? Is it possible?I'm importing the class and using getDefinitionByName for the instantiation. However, without declaring a variable of that time, the class is not being imported.

I realize this is kind of an odd issue, but I am wondering if there's any way to get Flash to allow me to access a class's static functions using a class variable that points to the class. Example:I create a class called FooClass that has a static function named fooI then create a variable of type Class that points to it
Code:
var class:Class = Class(getDefinitionByName("FooClass"));
However, when I try to call foo() using the variable, it errors saying the function

ve faced a problem. I have a super class called "Plane" which has subclasses called "Fighter" and "Bomber". each of these subclasses have a bullet type "Cannon" and "Bomb"Now I want the to send a reference of the bullet type to the super class, because bullet creation is handled there and I want to let the super class know which bullet type to create.Ofcourse I could pass a string, I just ant to know if there is a better way, like storing a class type in a variable?

Coming from a Delphi background, I am used to be able to have class references/pointers of a specific superclass, example:
#!pas
var
niceVar: class of TClassOne; // Delphi style
badVar: class; // Only? allowed AS3 style to the best of my knowledge
begin
niceVar := x;
badVar := x;
niceVar.staticMethodSpecificToTClassOne;
TClassOne(badVar).staticMethodSpecificToTClassOne;
end;
What this means is that I don't have to cast my variables to a specific class; they are of the correct Class beforehand. This also means that compile-time checking can be performed to make sure proper members are being accessed and I don't have to check that niceVar is in fact of class TClassOne if niceVar was passed to a method.
[Code] .....
So just like a variable storing an object can be for a specific type and only objects of that class or subclasses of it are accepted, so to does "class of AClass" allow for variables of a specific class to be limited to references to a certain class or those inherited from it. I hope that makes sense somehow; I don't know of specific nomenclature for the whole "class of SuperClass" thing. So I'd like to do the same in AS3 as having variables/properties/parameters of type Class does not cut the mustard; its kind of like having all object variables/properties/parameters simply being Object instead of their proper, specific type.
What I'd like to be able to do
public function set recordClass(aRecordClass: TRecordClass): void {
_recordInstance = new aRecordClass(this); // Compiler will know that I am creating a TRecord
}

So for instance, I've got three .as files called 'Helicopter.as, Game.as, Blue.as'
and I also have a .fla file called Helicopter.fla (These files are all suppose to link together, to make the helicopter game) . In the Game.as file, I have the following;
[Code]....
Flash doesn't recognise the original Helicopter symbol (in the Helicopter.fla file, because I deleted it). But I want the system to detect the 'circle' drawn using API (In the Helicopter.as file). And I have no idea how to how to name the API drawn circle 'Helicopter', thus I'm getting an error. So how do I name the API circle to 'Helicopter', so the Game.as file recognises it.

I created an flv video player using Flash Builder 4. This "BasicVideoPlayer" project is compiled into a SWC that will be eventually be used to create other video players that extend the functionality. One of the features is a view that appears when the video has finished playing that displays a "Play Again" button. This "Play Again" view has its own class, "BasicPlayAgain", that accepts a graphic asset that is exported from a .fla file that contains all of the graphic/UI assets.
In my new project, "EnhancedVideoPlayer", I'm using the BasicVideoPlayer SWC as a library to create a new video player that will add more functionality to the "Play Again" view; specifically it will add more buttons to that view.The EnhancedVideoPlayer uses a default class that extends the BasicVideoPlayer class. The BasicVideoPlayer class has a member called "playAgainScreen" whose type is BasicPlayAgain. The EnhancedVideoPlayer needs to override the playAgain member and recast it as EnhancedPlayAgain so it can control the new buttons properly.

I'm working on an accordion component and I was thinking that it'd be cool if I could write a very basic one and then set it up so that it would be possible to pass in any kind of container class and child class so long as they subclassed a particular parent or implemented an interface (haven't really gotten that far yet).
What I've noticed though is that I can't setup a default class for my constructor parameter. For example I'd like to do this:
Code:
public function DropDownList(containerClass:Class = ContainerSprite, childClass:Class = ChildSprite)
However it gives me the following error:
1047: Parameter initializer unknown or is not a compile-time constant.

I am trying to work with a global variable in Flex and it does not appear to be working correctly. In my default mxml file I declare the following
public var appID:int;
This variable keeps track of the session ID across my application for SQL purposes. On another mxml page I call the following code which should update the global variable to the current ID.
// Get the ID
sqlStatement.text =
"SELECT Max(id)FROM applications";
sqlStatement.execute();
var result:SQLResult;
result = sqlStatement.getResult();
FlexGlobals.topLevelApplication.appID = result.data[0];
Lastly I run a SQL Update query using the ID as a parameter. My problem is that the FlexGlobals.topLevelApplication.appID is always 0, for some reason the global variable never gets updated, I have checked to ensure that result.data[0] is correct but the value never gets passed to the global variable.

I've been trying to create a script that pulls the current time and turns it into a variable, the problem is the variable keeps updating as the time changes, where as I need it to remain static as the time that is was when the variable was first created...it's just a simple:
Code:
var theTime = today.getTime();

I've used similar code to this before in another project, but for some reason it's not working here:
Code:
var current:MovieClip;
menu01.menuslide.arch.onRelease = function() {
if (current != null) {
Tweener.addTween(current, {_y:0, time:.5, transition:"easeOutExpo"});
Tweener.addTween(menu01.menuslide, {_x:0, time:1, transition:"easeOutExpo"});
[Code] .....
I need to assign a value equivalent to the name of the button that is being pushed to the variable 'current'. when I trace 'current', I get 'undefined'. I used this in the past in this way below and it worked:
Code:
a2.onRelease = function() {
if (current != null) {
current._alpha = 0;
current.removeMovieClip();
attachMovie("002", "box002", 10, {_x: 0, _y: 30});
[Code] .....
Why the first code block isn't working?

i want to make the current page of a website, fade out, using the Transition Manager.
Best i can come up with is
Code:
TransitionManager.start(VARIABLEtoCurrentMovielip, {type:Fade, direction:Transition.OUT, duration:1, easing:Strong.easeOut});
and obviously before that, have it declare the variable, something like
Code:
if { current position = "home"
VARIABLEtoCurrentMovielip = "home_mc"
}
i just have no idea on the syntax. how do i access the current frame, namely the label? (ie how we have a layer that goes "Home" "About" etc) and then take that varaible and drop it in the transition manager string?

I wondered if there is a simple way I have have a snippet which traces the name of a method when called. I found className which is half-way there, but not something for the method... a 1-line trace(...) is what I'm after so I avoid typing the method name and leaving myself open to mistakes.This is for testing the order things happen, when I don't want to step through in the debugger.

My application has a lot of dynamically loaded shapes... Now i am working on an interface to change the color properties of each Sprite. The first idea was a simple colorTransform. But afaik this only allows for transforming the existing colors. I also want to be able to define a NEW fill, i.e. GradientType.LINEAR / RADIAL.
SOLUTION 1: There may be an undocumented method to retrieve a graphics current points. With that i could loop through this Array with lineTo and redraw the current shape with the new solid / gradient fill.
SOLUTION 2: Create a newSprite with the chosen GradientType, size it by currentSprite.getBounds(); and then use newSprite.mask = currentSprite; to fake my desired fill... However, i am afraid of the impact this creates on the application as there may be more than 200 of these Shapes displayed on stage... overlapping each other.

A Custom Class can be initiated from an FLA or from another Custom Class. Is there a way to find at run-time, where is the current class initiated from?We can't use parent class before it has been added with addChild(thisClass), neither we can use root class to identify its originator. I believe, there should be a way to find it.

I think I understand how to make a interface but the problem is im unsure as to how to add it to my existing code! To make a interface (as far as i know) You can create classes such as mainScreen, intructions and so on. Ok i get that, make the classes then add ther buttons from the library i these classes. But i followed a tutorial bu Emmanuel Feronto, and adapted that to the needs of my game.
So im unsure as how to add these 'Screens' to my current class, the I currently only have 1 class, Main which currently has 300 lines of code, and i dont know how to break it up into smaller classes. Thats the problem i think, The main is quite large, normally i have heard people keep this clear... But then say i made a bland main, and added the screens into that then how do i make the main that makes the game play on the play button?

The task was meant to be quite simple: I needed to initialize variable with new keyword dynamically, depending on it's type. For example:
public var object:Sprite;
...
object = new Sprite();
In this case type is Sprite, but it could be anything and a method which actually instantiates it with new, doesn't know with what type it was declared. Of course I could store type (or class name) in string variable and instantiate object with it. But I just wonder if I could get that type info from the object itself, 'cause it's declared in a class and logically thinking it's type info might be stored somewhere and be retrievable.

I have a simple class file for buttons. on Rollover the movieclip plays frame no 2 and on Rollout it plays frame no 11. This is working fine. Now I want to disable the current button on click/release and enable others. I don't know how to get the other buttons because the this keyword always refer to the current button that is rolled over of clicked.
ActionScript Code:
class ButtonClass extends MovieClip {
var buttonName:String;
public function ButtonClass() {
this.onRollOver = over;
this.onRollOut = out;

I came to realize that in order to get some of the effects to happen I'd need a way to know all of the current MovieClips being used in a given section of the web site. I figure the best way to do this is to create a Class for it and let it handle registering the clips. The functionality is pretty basic with the Class able to register a MovieClip and return all the MovieClips being used up until a given point in time or access a single MovieClip.
Unfortunately I don't really know how to implement this idea. I've pulled it off using index numbers but that wasn't for MovieClips. For this I'd like to be able to access any MovieClip that has been registered already by a name, like a String maybe.
