ActionScript 3.0 :: Refer To An Instance On The Stage If
Feb 9, 2009
How can I refer to an instance on the stage if:
- I added it to the stage using the GUI
- I wrote its implementation in an external AS file
I can't assign it a instance name otherwise I get this error: Code: ReferenceError: Error #1056: Cannot create property myInstance on MyClassName.

the second bit of code "mc_inst1.onRollOver..." works, but the first bit of code, which tries to loop through all movie clip instances, will not work.I think this is because myReference is a String. But can anyone suggest how else I should construct my reference to the instance name?
Code:
for (var a:Number = 1; a<myCount; a++) {
myReference="mc_inst"+a;
var myClip:MovieClip = myReference;

I have several movie clips labeled thumb0, thumb1, thumb2, etc.
How do I refer to these instance names inside a for loop? I want to do something like:
//DISPLAY THE THUMBNAILSfor(var thumbCount:int = 0; thumbCount < loadedThumbs.length; thumbCount++) { ["thumb" + thumbCount].visible = true;
}

Trying to set up a world of warcraft like hotkey setup for an RPG i'm making for a school project, where you drag spells from the spellbook onto the hotkeys. Understand all the concepts, however, instead of doing a ridiculous amount of if statements, I want to loop the functions. Unfortunately, I don't know how to refer to certain variable and instance names within loops. I shall show you what I have:
ActionScript Code:
for(var i; i<2; i++){
spellbook_inst["spell_"+i+"_inst"].onPress = function(){
this.startDrag();
_root.hold_spell_position_inst._x = this._x;
_root.hold_spell_position_inst._y = this._y;
}}
The "spells" (i.e., icons you drag from the spellbook) are all named spell_(number)_inst, and are movieclips within the spellbook_inst movieclip. I want the drag function to be available for all spells. At the moment, I don't get any syntax errors, but nothing happens, so I presume I have referred to it incorrectly.

var c = 0

so i finally decided to jump to as3 from as2! (yes, it took me some time XD) I have a better understanding of as3 after reading tutorials, however i have a problem/doubt: I have 2 movieclips on my main timeline with the name of the instances: OBJ_1 and OBJ_2. both have animations. OBJ_1 has a stop on its 1st frame; OBJ_2 has an action in its last frame:

I spent my holyday in studing new Flash 9, very good, powerfull but I doesn't find anymore my root, in teory is transformed in stage.root but it doesn't work.I want to understand if I make a mistake in my code or in my approach.I make a simple example with a few object containers.In the firsts lines of the constructor of the mail class I create the style class named tf and then the interface class called interf.Here is my class
Code:
package test {
import flash.display.Sprite;
import test.tf;[code]....
how to get the tf1 Object that as to be in stage.root.mytf.tf1 as some documentation say? If you doesn't comment that line you have an error. Obviously you can carry with you the object because is a small object with a few nidification but It seems to me very very bad for performance and code.

I'm trying to make a menusystem that will jump to specific frames depending on what frame I'm currently on. I have made a switch/case to evaluate the current frame. I have managed to find this code to get the current frame but I need an instance of my entire flash movie it seems? I have tried this (psudo code sort of). var frame = myClip.currentFrame; I then proceed to test frame in the switch/case statement. (All this is an event for a mouse event listener BTW). Now how can I refer to myClip?

I have an object created visually. How should I refer to it from classes of other objects? MovieClip(this.root).someObj or stage.someObj or MovieClip(this.root).stage.someObj? And moreover, if I want to see which frame is current on the main timeline, why I cannot just check stage.currentFrame? Why there is no such property of the stage, currentFrame? It has timeline, right?

I have a movieclip on stage, but I want to move it or animate it with the use of an .as file, how do I refer to a movieclip on stage through a .as file?
Is this even possible or do I have to pass the actual movieclip as a parameter to a function of the class?
To make things more clear, here is my code:
Code on main timeline:
Code:
var myBox:Box = new Box();
myBox.x = 80;
myBox.y = 160;

asically I have a variable in which I store various numbers depending on other aspects of the flash movie and I have a bunch of movieclips that are on the stage all named by number. I want to use the variable value to access and run methods etc of these movieclips.
e.g.
var myVar = "10";
myVar.myFunction();
where the item on stage called '10' will react. I realise this is a confusion between a string and an object/movieclip reference but i'm almost certain ive done this before and ive got a feeling it had something to do with [] brackets on the end of something...

When an instance variable is constructed by a constructor method, why do you need to refer to the current instance variable being created when its the only one being created? I understand assigning an expression to it but why name it "this." when it is the only object that the constructor is building? Does it have some hing to do with being able to naming that object in the Local Variable? In other words am I creating a generic object that will be named in another class?

I would like to know if there is a reason that, within an AS3 class, I would want to do something like this:
var myStageInstance:Stage;
//within an arbitrary class
var myStageInstance:Stage = stage;
myStageInstance.addEventListener(MouseEvent, someFunction);
as opposed to something that I would normally do:
//within an arbitrary class
stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent, someFunction);
There is no particular problem that I am looking to solve right now. I would just like to know if there is a reason to use one method over the other.

The Sample object does get added to the stage, although it doesn't honor the x & y position I specify. I'm sure I'm failing to comprehend something simple,

I have one MC on stage with instance name "box". That MC duplicates by using this script:
Code:
duplicateMovieClip (box, newname="box2", this.getNextHighestDepth());
box2._x = xPoz;
box2._y = yPoz;
So the new MC is now called "box2".
Inside original MC "box", I have one button. After click on that button, I need to know on which MC I clicked. box, or box2. I tried to use:
Code:
trace (this._name);
But, that get me only instance name of the button.

I was just doing a menu system for a game project, as3 with Flash CS5. The navigation is build on the frame on the main timeline. When I was creating stuffs on the 3rd frame, the btns on the frame can not be called, returning "null", this is weird. With further study, I found that, if I delete a instance on frame 2, the problem on frame 3 will be solved. Then I found that giving the instance on frame 2 a name could also make things normal. What is happening? Why having a unnamed instanced on the previous frame could make the instances on the next frame "null"?

I'm using Flash CS5. I have some instances on my stage declared in the main class and I want to attach some events to them, however at the time of the main class constructor, these are declared as null.
What's the best practice for accessing stage instances? Is there an event listener I could add that will tell me when the stage instance properties have been populated?
Simple example:
public class bleepBloop extends MovieClip {
public var productName:TLFTextField;
public function bleepBloop() {
trace( productName ); // Here it is null
}
}
However, when I access productName later, it's defined.

var arr1:Array = new Array( t1_mc, t2_mc, t3_mc, t4_mc );
var names:String;
//function made to add event listener to each object
function addListner():void {

I`m having a silly problem with adding instance of an object to the stage two or more times. For example, this don`t work:
Code:
var temp0:SomeClass = new SomeClass();
this.addChild(temp0);
this.addChild(temp0);
Well, I know that one instance is one instance and two objects of the same class on the stage would be two instances, but still, it is what I need.
