I've noticed that using stage.addChild(obj)(i.e. creating objects on the fly) can slow down frame rates.I was told by several sources that one way to speed up a flash game engine (or any animation where instances are generated as you progress), is to reuse objects in what is known as object pooling.
First of all a bit of background:The game engine I'm working on can be found at: http:[url]....Most objects (i.e. bullets, particles, enemies...) are exported for actionscript, each with a set of actions that are performed each frame, and another set of actions upon being created.Each class has an array called instanceList, which keeps track of all objects currently within play.The main timeline contains an event.ENTER_FRAME function mainActions(event:Event):void, that loops through each of the instances and performs the actions associated wit11h each.It goes through each instance of each class by going through the static array instanceList().
Now what I plan to do is:Have a seperate static array for each class, called inactiveInstances,which keeps track of deleted objects.Introduce a function for adding the objects back to the stage (with the nesscessary variables reset), to give the impression of a new object being created.When objects are destroyed:Should they be removed from the stage and readded latter e.g. removeChild(obj2)/addChild(obj1)? e.g.
Code:
public function instance_destroy()
{
parent.removeChild(this)
//Remove all refferences and listeners[code].....

After having some trouble with object deletion, I ran a simple test:Created a simple class with a weak reference listener for Event.ENTER_FRAME.Added a trace("I Exist!") call to the listened function.Instantiated a single instance with one reference in the Document Class.his worked as expected - the SWF file did nothing but print "I Exist!" every frame to the console. (In debug mode, of course.)What I did next did not work as I expected:I set the only reference of the object to be set to null on a mouse event, but the messages from the event listener of of said object still appeared in the console after the mouse event was fired and the reference set to null - meaning the object still existed!Calling System.gc() in the document class IMMEDIATELY stopped the event listener from printing further messages and seemingly deleted the item.
From what I understand, calling System.gc() is discouraged, but as it seems from this simple test the garbage collector is a big FAIL.Am I doing something wrong here in trying to dispose of the object, or should I simply call System.gc() every time I want to get rid of an object..?

I am working in on a Flex / Air application (using PureMVC) written virtually entirely in ActionScript 3 (i.e. we use very little of Flex). View components are added to a Canvas object in the main application window and these Views then load other movie clips, images files, etc.When I remove a View from the stage, I do so using application.canvas.removeChild(). This fires an event in my PureMVC mediator for that View, which removes any event listeners that were set up and everything appears to be dandy.However, the movie clips are still playing in the background. They are not causing any trouble on screen but they are simply there, playing somewhere in memory (e.g. I can see trace statements from them) and I want them gone. I suspect the View that was removed from the Canvas is still there too, but I can't prove it.
Setting the View to null doesn't do anything. I'm surprised that AS3 doesn't include any method to simply and effectively destroy a Display Object and all of its children.Is the only way to do this to tediously unload all of the movie clips, etc. and then hope that Flash will clean them up?

So I've got problem with some drawing objects inside movieclip in my flash file... Setting width and height of flash to match browser's w&h got my movie clip to get correct values, but unfortunately drawing objects inside of it are not scaled as movieclip. Those object are just random stripes that got some tween on it acting as somekind of preloader... All graphics are pulled from ai file, so no AS was used to manipulate them, just pure tweening in design mode...So if my stage w & h are lets say 720 x 50, graphics inside movieclip are 1600 x 900 which match my monitor's resolution.

If an image is 800 by 600, copy the image's bitmap data and divide the image into, say, 20 by 20 squares, each having a reference to be manipulated later. Im guessing you have to use bitmapdata for that, unfortunately I dont know how to copy bitmapdata from an image's arbitrary x and y coordinates and for a certain width/height.

I have a tree component in my stage and i am using _visible property to make that component hide and show. but even after setting the _visible propery false the space of that component is showing a small green shade in my page. So i tried the
Code:
tree.removeMovieClip();
property to remove the component fully from the stage. thats working fine but thats not restoring the same movieClip. Is there any options to restore that movieClip again?

I am trying to incorporate the facility to recover an object that has been deleted by the user. When he presses delete, i unload the movieclip. So if I want to recover it, complete with its last width, height, x and y positions, how do I do it? Is there some inbuilt function? or do I have to use some programming to do it, like save the object properties before deleting and all? The object could be any one of about 5-6 of them in my library, so knowing at run time which one to attach is impossible. So I need something to recover exactly the movie clip that was unloaded. I don't think attaching a new one and setting its properties will work. Very simply, I could just set the _visible to false when he presses delete, but then, thats not a very good practice I feel.

I'm trying to make it so you're shooting bullets, but with each bullet it lags worse. The duplicate movieclip it being removed, AND replaced. I don't know why it's lagging. All the bullet is is a line.It used to be only shooting one bullet at a time, and it didn't lag then Should I go back to the old way I had it?Does it always lag after a lot of duplicates?Does it not delete the actions that are in the duplicate movieclip?

How do I align a movieclip, which width and height is user-defined, inside another object (this one is static, though). Top-left alignment is easy, x=0 and y=0, but what about center, center left, bottom left, etc? Math(.round) i suppose, but how?I want an object (static) inside the movieclip (user-defined) to stay aligned to, for instance, the top right corner, similiar to the minimize, maximize and close buttons at the top right of your browser.. The height and width data is pre-defined by the user in another file.But that does probably not make any difference...

I have a movieclip that contains two frames, each frame contains a different set of buttons.
it seems that i cannot add the event listeners to buttons that are not in my current viewed frame.
so.. problem one: is there a way to add event listeners to all the elements in the movieclip even if the elements are in a different frame.
problem two: after I added an event listener to some elements in current frame and then I move forward to the next frame and go back to the same frame, all the event listeners are removed and i need to initialize them again. is there a way to resolve the issue without the need to re-initialize the event listeners ?

I have a MovieClip symbol created with flash in a fla file library. There is a textfield in frame one of this movieclip's timeline . There is another frame in the movieclip timeline. There is a custon class definition for this symbol. It is a flipping card in a memory game.
I access the textfield by going to frame 2 (gotoAndStop(2)) and setting the textfield's text property ( this.field.text = "hello" ). However if I go to frame 1 and then return to frame 2, the text becomes the original one in the library's symbol. I have to modify the text propery again in a showFace method I've written.
Besides, I cannot pass parameters in the constructor because it is a symbol in the library and that would give errors.Is there a way I can set properties inside frames permanently?

I have a syntax problem using Actionscript. Can I create new objects from inside an ArrayColletion ?
var tagsList:TagsListModel = new TagsListModel(new ArrayCollection([
{new TagModel("News", 36, yearPopularity, false, true)},
{new TagModel("Information", 18, yearPopularity, false, true)}
]);
This is the error I get:

I've never actually fooled around with 2d arrays that much. What I need is to access an array and get all the objects inside of it. I actually mocked up a little something to mirror what I want.
ActionScript Code:
var arr:Array = [[{name:"Hat", price:"34", url:"http://www.google.com"},
{name:"Scarf", price:"38", url:"http://www.yahoo.com"},
[code]....
I don't have any trouble getting the data, but as you can see that it's pushing each object separately in an array. So it would look like this: I just need to get all of the objects first like {obj}, {obj}, {obj} and then push them into an array.

I've got 4 arrays with 14 objects each:
player1[]
player2[]
player3[]

How could I trace all the objects inside 2 fors? How is the right syntax ? The following obviously is wrong:
Code:
for(var i:uint=1;i<5;i++)
{
for(var j:uint=0;j<14;j++)
{
trace((player+i)[j].cardType);
}
}

I´m starting to learn flash cs5 a couple hours ago. Currently i´m learning how to use layers. Imagine that I put a rectangle and an elipse inside layer 1. Then I create a new layer with a photo. How can I see the list (root) of objects that are inside each layer? I know that I can use the outline color to visually identify them but is it possible to see the objects as a root?

Has anyone successfully used hitTestObject on objects that weren't on the stage?
I have game code that works fine when the objects on are the stage, but replace "stage" with "this" (the game object that covers the whole stage) and it doesn't work.
