Web Development :: Web Development - Browser Support Like For Bare SWF Files?

Aug 31, 2009

Does anybody use bare .SWF files as webpages? I know it's possible; it seems to work fine for me. Why would I embed a SWF inside an HTML page if it's just going to be full screen (I mean the size of the browser's normal viewable page area, not COMPLETELY fullscreen)?

Is there a lack of browser support? Or is this functionality determined by the browser's Flash plugin?

Web Development :: Web Development - Browser Doesn't Load Imagers All At Once?

Jan 12, 2011

If I load a web page full of other files, e.g. images, my browser doesn't load them all at once.I seem to remember reading that IE will only have at most 3 requests open at a time for a page. The rest will be queued. If I have a flash movie on the page which is continually making image requests, how does this affect the maximum number of downloading files in the browser?

Is this browser limit accurate, and is it generally the same across browsers? Does flash share the requests of the browser? If not, does flash have a limit and what is that limit?
For some background, I do have a flash movie that is continually loading files so there is a queue of Loaders waiting to make requests. My idea was that if there was a different request that I needed to be executed straight away I could make it jump the queue by making a javascript call and allowing the browser to make the request instead.

Web Development :: Easiest Way To Get The Absolute Path Of Directory From Browser?

Dec 8, 2009

I allow my users to upload files from a directory. I use SWFUpload so that they can upload multiple files easily. However, I need to get the absolute path of the directory from which they are uploading.A little research tells me that it can't be done in plain HTML/Javascript or in Flash.Java applets seem to support this, so that's what I'm planning on using. I guess ActiveX can also do it, but I don't know much about ActiveX stuff, so I would rather avoid it.Also, I can assume that the users are using Windows (XP or greater) and IE.It there an easier way (other than writing a Java applet) that I'm missing? Having the user type in the directory into a textfield is an option, but not a very good one.

Flash :: Web Development - Not To Target 10 For A Browser - Based Game?

Oct 25, 2010

There's clearly a bunch of new stuff in Flash 10, I'm seeing a bunch in the Graphics class so far. Struggling a bit to reconcile it with what I know already but it looks useful - render lists and 3D transforms, etc - however I wondered if there are good arguments for targeting Flash 9 since I can definitely manage without all the new stuff I don't know. Like support on non-Windows devices, wide adoption of Flash 9 Vs 10, etc.

Actionscript3 :: Game Development - Flash Cs4: Resolve Lag When Launched From Browser?

Aug 12, 2011

I've been working for a month on a flash game, which should be manageable to play in a browser (light computation). This being said, I've noticed that in some browsers the game runs at what looks like 15 fps (the game should run in 80fps). This has been known to happen in IE9, and the quick fix was to add this line to the top of the html: <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" value="IE=9"> This was a quick-fix that forces IE into compatibility mode and greatly improved the fps (to about... 60, let's say). Still, I believe that the game is running slower than it should in every browser, which is evident when the html version is compared to the swf.

Web Development :: Web Development - Post Flash Exe To Web?

Aug 26, 2010

I've been given a Flash tutorial to post to the corporate website that is an .exe file with an embedded Flash player. Users will be on IE, so I guess they would get the run/save prompt. I don't like this and I know it generally isn't done, but I need to know if it is OK to just do it. When I try to explain the security issues with executable files, eyes glaze. Is it possible that the users' system admins would be able to block the run prompt and make the user save the file? Could they block that too? The user community is hopeless, so having the embedded Flash player could be a good thing.

Multimedia Development Platforms?

Dec 15, 2009

I've been out of multimedia development since then, but have started dabbling in Flash. The version of Flash my company currently owns is old--Flash MX. It's old, but has been good enough to prototype some ideas that I have.My boss says he's willing to upgrade my version of Flash and send me for training, but before he does so, he wants me to confirm that Flash is the best platform for me to learn. So that's the question: what's the best development platform for multimedia development? I've been reading that people predict Director is on its way out, even though it's more powerful than Flash. I've seen people mention AIR and FLEX, but I don't really know anything about them.

Flex :: MVC Architecture Development

Nov 22, 2011

I have a mobile application that I want to try and reorganize so that it's easier to read and update and follows better practice.I want to implement an MVC pattern, but I'm getting a little tripped up on getting there. I'm just hoping for some help with rebuilding the architecture. Here's the outline of my application:

Level1) MainView has a column of 5 buttons that when clicked lead to View1, View2, View3, View4 or View5.

Level2) Each of these views is the same: a list, but each is populated with different data. Selecting an item brings the user to another set of views SubView1 - 20. that each are again populated with a list.

Level3) However, any selection made on a List in a SubView leads to a view that is always the same for all selection paths - but is populated with different data. Basically a button, another list, a text input and a textarea.

From what I gather, I should be able to use a lot less files and achieve something of the same result:The model being a single class for data? The controller being a class or that controls the business logic, and a view that calls the controller?

I've been working on them for a while,at least space out, but don't know what to do about getting feedback/users to try them. They use php and mysql to act like a server, and are written purely in as3.Space out has had more functional versions that were based on a development kit, which I am trying to move away from now. ActionScript 3.0 :: Jigsaw Development Using PS And Flash CS5

Feb 9, 2012

I am planning to develop a jigsaw puzzle, by designing the puzzle pieces in Photoshop (with each jigsaw piece on a separate layer) and then importing all PS layers into flash, to compile the game. I haven't been using AS3 for too long, but am reasonably happy with the progress I've been making and would like to take this step up in terms of complexity.

The pieces will be stored in an array (piecesAry). I want the pieces to each be registered to a Point on the playing board. For example, if there are 100 pieces in the jigsaw, each piece will have correct place in terms of a 10x10 matrix (10 rows x 10 columns). The unique Point for each piece will, I think, need to be stored in the piecesAry.

My query relates to how I am best assigning the unique Point to each individual piece. For example, to take again the example of the 100 piece jigsaw, would it be possible / effective to create an underlying 10 x 10 bitmap square grid, and have each piece of the grid assigned to an individual piece (the thinking being that the square grid can be "cut up" easier than the jigsaw once in flash).

Flex :: Module Development Workflow?

Oct 6, 2009

I have just started looking into using Modules in Flex and would like to know how you all go about developing them.I understand how to use them (load, unload, application domains, shared classes, etc.), but I'm wondering what a good workflow is in creating them and using them in multiple applications. If I were building reusable application components (text editor, image cropper, compass, whatever), and I wanted to reuse them in many different applications, it seems like I would:

1) Create an Application specifically for one of those modules

2) Create a Module inside that Application

3) Develop the Module by itself, make it work right

4) Link shared libraries to it somehow (like library projects I would use between all of the modules)

5) ... then I'm unclear what's next.I now have lets say 10 Module/Applications, and I want to start mashing them together into usable applications. What's the best way to do this?I would like to not have to copy-paste code and swfs, using something like git submodules if an equivalent is possible.
