Flex :: Creating One File Per Function With Same Name?
Apr 21, 2009
I am relatively new to Flex/ActionScript, but I have been using a pattern of creating one file per function in my util package - with the name of the file being the same as the name of the function.
Like if the file was convertTime.as:
package util{
public function convertTime(s:String):Date{
...
}}
This way I can import the function readily by doing:
import util.convertTime;
...
convertTime(...);
I like this way better than importing a class object and then calling the static methods hanging off of it, like this:
import util.Util;
...
Util.convertTime(...);
But, the more I do this, the more files I'll end up with, and it also seems a bit wasteful/silly to put only one function into a file, especially when the function is small. Is there another alternative to this? Or are these two options the only ones I have?

I am creating a SWF file using a MXML file. The MXML file define several MX:Button and uses an external stylesheet to style them. There is a problem I am facing at the moment, I am aiming to style the buttons in a way that is similar to the way I can style HTML button elements. However, I could not achieve such look and feel. For example, I could not find a way to define the color and thickness of the borders for each side of the button (top, bottom, left, right), the background color, the margins, the padding, the width, and the height of the button. Also, selector such as hover, active, focus are not available. I was only able to change the size and the font color of the button successfully.

I want to ask if someone can give me an example of creating child through xml. I mean creating custom components through xml (for every xml tag you create your own custom component and then add it as a child to the stage). I hope is it clear enough... :)

i load in ActionScript a swf file. So far no Problem, but I didn't found a way to access one of it's functions, the best thing would be if I could access the main function in the mxml part of the swf.
Here is the code of the main-mxml file that belongs to the swf that should load and access another swf[code]...

Initially I had a 2039 error I resolved this by using a local testing server, which resulted in a 2038 error. So then I hard coded the url and now I dont get any errors but the file doesnt upload.
Instead a file is created (FileUpload.cs) in the directory where the files should be.
Does anyone know what this FileUpload.cs file is?

So I've gone through a few different websites looking for a way to make a symbol a link, and I keep running into the same problem. I am using action script 3.For example, I got this code from this page:[url]....[code]......
It makes the symbol (logolink) a link (changed the mouse cursor to a pointer), but it kills my animations and errors out saying (all on line 4...the function callLink line): "expecting leftparen before colon", "expecting identifier before leftbrace", and "expecting rightparen before leftbrace".I tried a few things like adding an unused parameter, and a couple other things (trying to satisfy the above errors), but then I get "call to possibly undefined method addEventListener through a reference with static type Class"

i have a set of "if conditionals" that should always be together,what i want to do is to put these conditionals in a function... then call the function once needed. i want to call this function once the flash starts playing + when i click on any of the 3 buttons.
here is the code so far:
ActionScript Code:
var btn1:Boolean=true;
var btn2:Boolean;
var btn3:Boolean;
[code]....
the problem is button1 should have no eventlistener once the movie starts playing, but it has all listeners... so how can i make AS reads BtnStatus function once it starts loading

Im trying to create a simple loop that creates 50 buttons, adds them to screen and then when a button is pressed, it traces out that number. I can get it to work by doing stuff I consider hacky (such as using the buttons X/Y location to determine its value), but I'd rather just be able to hold a single value in the function.
The code itself is:
for (var a:int = 0; a < 5; a++) {
for (var b:int = 0; b < 10; b++) {

openList = Array([1,1], [2,3], [4,5]);
containss = function (input, arrayData, tellID) {
for (i = 0; i < arrayData.length; i++) {
if (arrayData[i] == input) {
[code]....
This code returns false when openList contains 2,3. When I add trace(arrayData[i]), I get 1,1 2,3 4,5 and when I do trace(input) I get 2,3.

I would like to make a function that lets me load a movie clip onto the stage like this:
ActionScript Code:
function callImage(i:Class):void {
var img_loader:i = new i();
stage.addChild(img_loader);
}
callImage(b0_base);
b0_base is the class name for my MC. Is this possible? or do I have to write a different function for each Movie clip?

I have this long list of video files(some 500 of them) to be linked to my flash interface. I am looking at the option of creating a search engine such as that when the user key in some keywords, it will search thru my list of video files and bring up the appropriate files. (results will show names of files first then user can choose to click on those that they want to view)

basically i have a mc that i want to use as a button.
frame 1 is the initial state with a stop() action on it. frame 10 is the full rolled over state, also with a stop() action on it, and frame 20 matches frame 1.
so basically i want the button to animate frame 1-10 if they rollover, and animate frame 11-20 when they roll off. i would also like it to detect the current frame, so like if the user rolls off and rolls back on at frame 15, it will play backwards to the mouseover state (frame 10).

I've got an array (slides) that I parsed from an amfphp return that contains the following data in each array element:
slides = (chapterName, lessonName, slideName, slideText), for every slide in the course
I'm trying to get arrays out this that will look like:
chp1Array = list of Lesson names in that Chapter
chp1Less1Array = list of slide names in that Lesson
chp1Less2Array
chp2Array
chp2Less1Array
chp2Less2Array
chp2Less3Array
etc. etc.
This wouldn't be a problem in as2 but I can't get it to work in AS3 because it gives me errors when I try to create the arrays with dynamic names from within the function? How to get the dynamic number into the array name...

I'm doing a school project in flash that basically has to be a movie trailer, just several photos compiled together with some music. I got bored and now am making controls in Actionscript. I'm using CS4, however I have the document based in Actionscript 2.0. Basically, I have created a rewind button that goes backwards, however now I want it to do one of the two things:
If the video was playing when the button was pressed, I want it to go back to playing when released. If the video was paused the the button was pressed, I want it to continue to stay paused when released. I've tried some very basic if statements, trying to assign boolean statements, but I'm stuck. Here's what I have thus far for my rewind button:
Code:
rewind_button.onPress = function () {
onEnterFrame = function() {
prevFrame();
}}
rewind_button.onRelease = function () {
delete onEnterFrame;
play();
}}

I would like to create multiple sprites with a checkbox to remove all items from that sprite without removing the sprite itself. I would rather not create a script for each individual sprite. I would prefer creating one function that creates all the sprites ... If you see below, I would like the function (CreateSprite(10,20)) to include one on the sprites I created in the first line i.e.: CreateSprite(10,20,s1); rather than create 3 CreateSprite functions. I would also like to avoid creating multiple boxClick functions for each sprite.
var obj:Sprite;
var s1:Sprite, s2:Sprite, s3:Sprite
function CreateSprite(xx:int,yy:int):void{
obj = rectSprite();
obj.x = xx;obj.y = yy;
[Code] .....

Because it's a little hard to explain what I need.. I'll make an example.So.. I have the figure below. I mean.. that's what I'm trying to achieve. For that figure I have data stored in the folowing way._root.marc is an Array.All the paths that leave a square ... like From M0 if you choose 1 you'll get M1,From M0 through 5 you'll get to M3.. and so on.this is stored like_root.marc[0].p - the paths. If _root.marc[x].p.length is 0.. that means that Mx is the last one.. and has no paths assigned, like shown in the figure. My very big problem is that I need to position that MC's.. M3,M4.. all of them, according to the paths above them.
So, to position M2, i need to take a look at M1, and if it has any paths, more than one path, I need to move it further down. But this is not the end of it. If M1 has more paths that lead to other MC-s.. i need to take in considerations their paths too . This drove me mad for the last couple of days, and my time is slowly running out for my diploma What I've tryed till now was to build a function let's say... getNextY(m) that should return a number. A "ponder"?..like...to use it in a line like M2._y = (currIndex + getNextY(1))*dy;// here it should return 5 for instanceM3._y = (currIndex + getNextY(2))*dy;// here getNextY should return 1

I've had to create the following code to get a series if loading movies to work properly. Each loaded movie is basically a series of automatically looping images controlled by external xml. I found that without adding the unload movie on each button action the first movie loaded kept playing over any subsequent movies loaded. However its rather long winded and if the amount of movies increase it really is going to be very large. How to create an efficient funtion that does the job in a more effective way:
intro_mc.onRelease = function() {
unloadMovie ("_root.container02");
unloadMovie ("_root.container03");
unloadMovie ("_root.container04");
createEmptyMovieClip("container01", 2);
loadMovie("deaf_intro.swf", "container01");
[Code] .....
