What is the right way to allow Garbage Collector to recycle _movieClipClassVariable after it is not necessary? Assign null to it? Remove all listeners? Use weak reference for listeners?
I have a CustomSimpleButton class and a CustomSprite class which creates a bunch of CustomSimpleButtons and displays them at runtime. How can I access other objects on the stage in Flash inside of my two custom classes? If I want an object tween to occur when one of my custom buttons is clicked how do i reference the object that I want to tween if I'm inside of my custom class.

To do that I activated onion skin tool, selected all objects and all frames and resized by using the transform tool.
However, masks and some motion paths are not scaled proportionally.Is it yet another bug in CS4? Here is a video illustrating the [URL]...
I increased the size of my stage to 1280 x 1024 and now objects on the periphery have disappeared. When I zoom in they appear, but when I zoom out or export the movie the objects in the center are there but the objects around the edge do not appear. If I add an object and drag it to the edge I can watch it disappear as I am dragging it, but when I zoom in it is there. I have no masks and I need to create the video at the higher resolution, so I cannot resize the stage smaller.

obviously there are several layers on there too, and on them there are Three buttons which I want to click on to get to each of the three frames. But every time I follow a tutorial nothing seems to work.I have taken out all the script that the various tutorials have told me to enter and only have two stop commands for two Movie Clips that are also on the stage.If I give you the following information could someone please write the script for the three buttons to link to frame 1,2&3

I've added text to the stage and if I test it out using ctrl+enter, it does not show up. If the swf "loads"/"simulate load" then the text shows up, but not in the correct font.This is the error when the swf is not preloaded:VerifyError: Error #1014: Class flashx.textLayoutcontainer::Container Controller could not be found.at flash.display::MovieClip/nextFrame()at spot_fla::MainTimeline/l()I've also recently added an AS3(CS5) preloader which is when this started. The library mc items have been set to export in frame 2 but the font doesn't show up. The font has been embedded as well but linking/unlinking it does nothing. The AS3 preloader is a simple script that a lot of tutorials online use.The textfield is located in frame 2 of the timeline and is not referenced in AS. However it is inside of a mc that has a mouse listener on it(mc).

when the stopDraggingMe() method is called from another object (code shown below) I need to see all the objects on the stage to see what objects on the stage my currently selected movie clip is over and assign it to the dropCheck.checkAgainst method (that will be checked against an array to see if it can in fact be dropped, if so set the canBeDropped value to true and therefor run the .stopDrag() ). I have read using root is not a good coding practice in AS 3.

lets say I have animated a car entering the stage area from outside the stage. When I render the SWF at first only the content on the onstage area is visible but if I resize/enlarge the window I can also see the car(content) lying outside the stage just like in the flash file. How can I make sure that no off stage content is visible at all in the final SWF?

I am a newb to Flash CS5 Pro, so I can't tell what is wrong. I have multiple objects on my stage that I copied to create afull effect. Most of the objects perform perfectly, but the ones on the edge of the stagedisappear when I export to video. When I zoom in to look at them, they are there,but when i zoom out to fit to page, they are gone

View 1 RepliesI need to create an object in code which can then be imported to the stage. Specifically it's a circle with an ellipse cut out of it. The size and position of the ellipse masked out need to be parameterized by sliders, and the size of the circle as a whole is also a parameter which might be dragged out on the stage.
Does anyone have an example of how to programatically create an object in action script which can be imported to the library which can take parameters (or rather expose some methods) which can be wired to other things in the project like a knob or slider?
Is there any way to find out about all the objects being on the stage?I mean, all nested in other movieClips or Sprites too.I can find children of specific object by looping it with getChildAt(), but of course I would have to do this for all the objects in their levels that they are nested in..

I realise I could use hitTest to check if something is intersecting, but I can't use it to find the names of the said objects. I also realise I could just cycle through all the objects on the stage and calculate it that way, but considering there's over 300 objects that could 'possibly' be covering this particular object, thats a lot to calculate, and i'd like it to be snappy...
I get the feeling the title is misleading... What I try to achieve is quite simple (at least it sounds like a simple thing to do). I am trying to find the intersection of 2 objects in relation to each other. One of them is the character for my game, and the other is the obstacle (the floor, a barrel, etc). I need to find the coordinates of the character in relation to the obstacle. Here's a picture to make it a bit clearer:
Here the coordinates (and the cross) represent the origin of my objects, and the two squares are my character (twice to better represent the multiple possibilities). The number after the slash for the square is what I should get as the .x when my character hits the obstacle. I tried using getBounds(), but I really don't know about it and tried stuff based on the little knowledge I have about it (I won't post the code here, first it was horrible, and it also didn't survive the rage I had trying to get this to work...).

I have a service which returns an Array of ObjectProxy objects. I would like to cast this to a custom object (a value object) and create an ArrayCollection. View 1 RepliesI'm in the process of making a board game in Flash; as part of process of getting fully to grips with Flash AS3.
I have a JPEG of the original board. This contains ~ 1000 circles that players may move pieces between. Pretty standard board-game stuff. The circles are not in any way regularly spaced.
So far, I've drawn the circles in Flash, by hand, and positioned them where they need to be. This looks great - I can see all my places.
What I want to do now is create these circles programatically. I want to be able to do this so I can adjust how the spaces look (depending on game state). Eventually I'll want to be able to zoom / pan the entire game board as well.
My question is, is there a way of tagging each circle with a unique reference and then looping through and recording locations?
I'm thinking something a bit like the Javascript DOM "getElementsByTagName" or similar.
At the moment I can only see two options:
Convert each circle to a symbol and give it a unique class name so I can access it from code Go through and write down the X/Y of each circle (add to my DB of board locations that I already have) so I can plot them programatically

two balls are stationary on stage and I am dragging ball 1 between them. I want my program to deny the ability to do this (technical terms) and move the ball automatically to the closest point available that does not overlap either of the other two balls i.e. the left side of the dragged ball may touch but not over lap ball 3. I have a feeling the circular equation: (x-a)^2 + (Y-b)^2 = c comes into it but it may need pythagoras instead as the balls are all circular but not all the same size. The best way I can see for this is to write a multi-part equation for the bounds of boths balls and then finding the nearest point, but not sure how to do this in as3, perhaps using the 'for each' tag.
Is there a way to have a function draw a box around an object by finding the objects instance name via a string?
such as:

In my machine I have installed only Adobe Flash CS5 proffesional trial version. Now this installation is not supporting adobe.utils.Extension class in this version. I have tried with all latest updates from adobe site. My doubt is does adobe.utils.Extension class is available in licensed version of Adobe Flash CS5 proffesional?
View 12 Replieshow I can find the original stage size of an SWF that has been loaded into a parent clip via MovieClipLoader? In the child clip, there are a number of elements that extend beyond its stage, so when I check the _width and _height properties, then they include the stage overlap.
I tried using mc.getBounds(), but it doesn't seem to give me what I'm after.
How do I determine the pixel size of the stage or viewing area defined in Flash CS4? Isn't it just stage.width and stage.height?
Okay now the long version:
I'm working on a script in AS3 and Flash CS4, and I'm doing some art by code.
I wanted to make a progress bar for a preloader, so I made a Preloader MovieClip and on that movieclip I drew a white rectangle, and I told it to appear at stage.width / 3 and stage.height /3. It drew it at the top corner instead, and after a lot of experimentation, and reading the ActionScript 3.0 Language and Components Reference I found that a display object's width and height are defined by their contents, and you can't manually alter them to be bigger. So I figured that I could make an invisible rectangle the size of the stage in the background of the preloader MovieClip and that would make it the size of the stage, but I realized that I would still be stuck manually setting the stage size to match what I wrote in ActionScript. Untill the MovieClip containing the Preloader was added as a child object to the stage, which would then set the stage.width and stage.height to match those of the contents.
Now that I talk about it, I suppose I'm looking for the size of the perspective or viewing window, rather than the stage. The stage can be larger or smaller than the viewing window in Flash, can't it? But the perspective of the window is finite, unless you change it.
The thing is I'm sure I've polled this information to position an object at the center of the viewing area before, but I can't for the life of me remember how. So, that's what I'm asking; how do I find the dimensions of the viewing area, so that I can either position an object at the middle, or create an object the size of the viewing area, by code?
