ActionScript 3.0 :: Flash Finding Nearest Point Of The Outside Of Two Objects
Aug 8, 2011
[Code]....
two balls are stationary on stage and I am dragging ball 1 between them. I want my program to deny the ability to do this (technical terms) and move the ball automatically to the closest point available that does not overlap either of the other two balls i.e. the left side of the dragged ball may touch but not over lap ball 3. I have a feeling the circular equation: (x-a)^2 + (Y-b)^2 = c comes into it but it may need pythagoras instead as the balls are all circular but not all the same size. The best way I can see for this is to write a multi-part equation for the bounds of boths balls and then finding the nearest point, but not sure how to do this in as3, perhaps using the 'for each' tag.

I'm trying to figure out how to find a point relative to the center of an object, modified by its rotation. For example, in the attached swf, I've been messing around trying to draw trails to a bitmap, coming out of the thrusters. I didn't have a problem at first, but as the ship rotated, the lines that were being drawn wouldn't remain relative.
http:[url]....
I'm sure this is because I have no idea what I'm doing, and I've just been sort of idioting my way through it. That aside, is there an easy way to find the point I'm looking for? For instance, say I want a point at Y -14 of my ship, but I want that to remain relative to the ship as it rotates.

I'm in the process of making a board game in Flash; as part of process of getting fully to grips with Flash AS3.
I have a JPEG of the original board. This contains ~ 1000 circles that players may move pieces between. Pretty standard board-game stuff. The circles are not in any way regularly spaced.
So far, I've drawn the circles in Flash, by hand, and positioned them where they need to be. This looks great - I can see all my places.
What I want to do now is create these circles programatically. I want to be able to do this so I can adjust how the spaces look (depending on game state). Eventually I'll want to be able to zoom / pan the entire game board as well.
My question is, is there a way of tagging each circle with a unique reference and then looping through and recording locations?
I'm thinking something a bit like the Javascript DOM "getElementsByTagName" or similar.
At the moment I can only see two options:
Convert each circle to a symbol and give it a unique class name so I can access it from code Go through and write down the X/Y of each circle (add to my DB of board locations that I already have) so I can plot them programatically

i was wondering if there was something that allowed you to grab any 2d point that exists inside a movieclip and grab the 3d position of that exact point...
for example i have a rectangle movieclip on the stage .. and its rotate on the x axis 75 degrees.. registration of the clip is at bottom middle.. so when it rotates the bottom stays in the same spot and everything rotates around it..
now what if i wanted to know the exact x,y,z of the top edge of the clip..
is there a function similar to localToGlobal that would take the x,y coordinate inside the clip and spit back a global 3d point .. (i guess its called a Vector3D)

I got a working broad phase and collision detection is fast enough.Now my collision response is working, but slow. I have trace(using getTimer()) through the whole resolving method, and I found the slow spot is where I get the collision point and normal vector.
Right now, I test each point on each shape against each line on the other shape. This works nice on triangles, but other shapes, it much to slow.I would think that using SAT(seperating axis therom) would have a way to get this when checking collisions, but I cant seem to get it.I need a fast way to get the collision point and normal vector.(Right now, it takes about 3 milliseconds per collison on a rectangle with 4 points and 4 lines)

I´d like to know if it´s possible to find a minimum y point (where the shape ends) of a shape, in a given x coordinate.
Example: I have a complex shape like a big "S". Suppose the "S" minimum x coordinate is 0. How can I find the minimum y point of the "S" (again, where the shape ends) in the x coordinate of 14?
Here is the image: I need to find the y coordinate (or point) of the blue point in the image.

I have a Movieclip (MC1) with and moving object (OBJ1) inside it and using AS3. I want to do a hit test on it with another object (OBJ2) that is on the stage. Normally I would just do MC1.x + OBJ1.x to get my coords for the hit test. But how do I do it if MC1 has been rotated?

Is there any way to find out about all the objects being on the stage?I mean, all nested in other movieClips or Sprites too.I can find children of specific object by looping it with getChildAt(), but of course I would have to do this for all the objects in their levels that they are nested in..

need a method of finding all the objects over the top of another object...
I realise I could use hitTest to check if something is intersecting, but I can't use it to find the names of the said objects. I also realise I could just cycle through all the objects on the stage and calculate it that way, but considering there's over 300 objects that could 'possibly' be covering this particular object, thats a lot to calculate, and i'd like it to be snappy...

I get the feeling the title is misleading... What I try to achieve is quite simple (at least it sounds like a simple thing to do). I am trying to find the intersection of 2 objects in relation to each other. One of them is the character for my game, and the other is the obstacle (the floor, a barrel, etc). I need to find the coordinates of the character in relation to the obstacle. Here's a picture to make it a bit clearer:
Here the coordinates (and the cross) represent the origin of my objects, and the two squares are my character (twice to better represent the multiple possibilities). The number after the slash for the square is what I should get as the .x when my character hits the obstacle. I tried using getBounds(), but I really don't know about it and tried stuff based on the little knowledge I have about it (I won't post the code here, first it was horrible, and it also didn't survive the rage I had trying to get this to work...).

AS2, + CS4 Flash I am trying to develop a 'Nearest Store Locator' in flash for part of my website. Basically instead of having all of my stockists and stores listed on the website, I would like to have an input box, where a user can put in their Postcode, and the flash swf will search the stores we stock by the postcode(s) and bring up the closest 3 - 5 stores. Is this possible to do,

Is there a way to have a function draw a box around an object by finding the objects instance name via a string?
such as:
Code:
function BoxObject(object) {
//code to draw a box around the object
}
and then juts have an object with an instance name, like "my_mc" and then call the function on a keyframe like:
BoxObject("my_mc");

How do I determine what objects are underneath a given x or y coordinate on the stage or within a sprite? Preferably, I'd like to be able to do this so that a class that extends Sprite and is a child of the Stage can determine what's underneath a given x coordinate of itself, regardless of position on the stage. This has to be done without user input.
I'm not clear on what methods might make sense for this. The hitTest stuff requires more info than I'm likely to have. Maybe localToGlobal, but to use that, I need to know what the objects are already. There are a finite number of them, so I could have them testing for this all the time, but that doesn't seem right and may not even get me what I'm looking for.

My friend and I are working on a flash project in actionscript 3, and we are trying to move several movieclips by a portion of a pixel. Since we have filters on these movieclips, flash rounds their location to the nearest pixel, making the motion look jumpy. Is there anything that can be done to stop flash from rounding their location to the nearest pixel?

I am trying to detect bodies which are near current. To do it, I've created quite a big collision shape, around the current body, and made it sensor. Collision event was triggered, but it's not what I need. Main thing is that collision event is called only first time when another body entered the detection field... And I want to be able to detect changes in bodies location, after it. (I am considering the fact that other bodies are moving inside detection field)

All though I can scale down the size of my objects and can shift them to their correct positions when scaling. I cannot shift them to the correct relative positions, relative to the screen centre.
Code:
level=1; //starting scale level
public function scaleOut(level:int) // scale to a level 1-4{
for (var r = 0; r < Main.ballArray.length; ++r){
// scale radius
Main.ballArray[r].bRadius *= (oldLevel / level);

I am building a control to allow me to set a meeting time, and I would like it to use as a default, the current time rounded up to the nearest 15 minute interval. So if it is currently 6:07, it would read 6:15 as the start time.
Does anyone know how this might be accomplished, or have run across a code snippit that would put me on the right track?

It's been a long time since I've done any work with actionscript, and alas I've forgotten nearly everything. I've tried to look for a tutorial that would explain basic animation with actionscript, but the one that I found on Kirupa was no longer there.
Basically I'd like to do this:On the stage I have a movieclip and I'd like the movieclip to move along the x-axis to a certain point and then back to the starting point again. The moving speed of the movieclip should also be adjustable.

Internally Flash obviously keeps a list of the primitives drawn using Graphics so I wondered if you have many such primitives in a Sprite, can you re-position/remove/alter individual items rather than clear and re-draw everything? Or is this deeper into the bowels of Flash than you're allowed (or recommended) to go?
