ActionScript 3.0 :: Finding Stage Coordinates Of Point Inside Rotated MC
Jun 5, 2011
I have a Movieclip (MC1) with and moving object (OBJ1) inside it and using AS3. I want to do a hit test on it with another object (OBJ2) that is on the stage. Normally I would just do MC1.x + OBJ1.x to get my coords for the hit test. But how do I do it if MC1 has been rotated?

i need to check if a point is within a rotated rectangle. I have to do this mathematically, as none of the objects are on the stage so i can't use hitTestPoint. I know the position and rotation of the rectangle, and if necessary can get the four corners as points as well.
I kind of feel silly asking this, because i am pretty sure it's not a hard thing to do, i just can't work it out and so far any google searches just bring up hitTestPoint.

I am trying to scale a movieclip with AS3, but always using the center of the stage as the registration point. The movieclip is larger than the stage to begin with, and uses a slider component to slide back and forth. I'd like to be able to scale the movieclip using a button, but it currently uses it's own registration point (upper left corner) as the source.
Is there a way to force the scale to use the center of the stage?

I'm trying to figure out how to find a point relative to the center of an object, modified by its rotation. For example, in the attached swf, I've been messing around trying to draw trails to a bitmap, coming out of the thrusters. I didn't have a problem at first, but as the ship rotated, the lines that were being drawn wouldn't remain relative.
http:[url]....
I'm sure this is because I have no idea what I'm doing, and I've just been sort of idioting my way through it. That aside, is there an easy way to find the point I'm looking for? For instance, say I want a point at Y -14 of my ship, but I want that to remain relative to the ship as it rotates.

I need to know what side of a rotated box my sphere/point is colliding with and at what angle.
I could perform the 4 lines check but I think it will be too cpu consuming. I need it for fast simple physics simulations(bounces)..

I'd like to use the x and y mouse coordinates as variables in a program. I'm very new to Flash and ActionScript and I'm not even sure which classes I need to import or which listeners or handlers I need to use.

We have a client server architecture where a C++ server talks to Flash clients. I'm developing the server and would like to send through tcp an xy coord to simulate a button press where the receiving flash client would find the topmost visible object at that coord and send a mouse event to it such that we could simulate play without a human present. I'm told this is incredibly difficult, but it seems to me that there must be a way to do this. Am I off the mark? Or is there a mechanism in flash to iterate through all objects regardless of parent child relationships to find a visible button at an x, y coord and signal a press event?

I have made a few posts now, and I'd like to especially Prid for not only answering them, but for giving me guidance on how to learn AS2. I am progressing very nicely, and have made a couple of simple games without any tutorials, but theres one thing I couldn't find. I have this character which can move, up and down, left and right. I also have an enemy trying to shoot at him. However, this enemy needs to know where the character is. I already have the shooting code (Prid), but it was for shooting in the direction of the mouse. What I need now is to replace the bit of code that finds the mouse coordinates with code that finds the coordinates of the player.
The shooting code is on the frame (doubt that is important to say, but still) and the instance AND name of the Character is, well, Character. So basically, I need a code to calculate coordinates of a movie clip that does not have a fixed position. Oh and one more thing, should I post simple stuff like this in the beginner section, because I've seen waaay more complicated stuff there than in the AS2 section.

I have a rectangle of any arbitrary width and height. I know X,Y, width, and height. How do I solve the upper right hand coordinates when the rectangle is rotated N degrees? I realized if it were axis aligned I would simply solve for (x,y+width). Unforunatly this doesn't hold true when I apply a transform matrix on the rectangle to rotate it around its center.

I have a line dynamically drawn in a coordinatesystem. The line is drawn by the user. Now I wonder if there is a way to find out where the line crosses the y-axis. I know about hittest but how can I get exacltly where (x- and y-coordinates) for the hitpoint?

I get the feeling the title is misleading... What I try to achieve is quite simple (at least it sounds like a simple thing to do). I am trying to find the intersection of 2 objects in relation to each other. One of them is the character for my game, and the other is the obstacle (the floor, a barrel, etc). I need to find the coordinates of the character in relation to the obstacle. Here's a picture to make it a bit clearer:
Here the coordinates (and the cross) represent the origin of my objects, and the two squares are my character (twice to better represent the multiple possibilities). The number after the slash for the square is what I should get as the .x when my character hits the obstacle. I tried using getBounds(), but I really don't know about it and tried stuff based on the little knowledge I have about it (I won't post the code here, first it was horrible, and it also didn't survive the rage I had trying to get this to work...).

I'm in the process of making a board game in Flash; as part of process of getting fully to grips with Flash AS3.
I have a JPEG of the original board. This contains ~ 1000 circles that players may move pieces between. Pretty standard board-game stuff. The circles are not in any way regularly spaced.
So far, I've drawn the circles in Flash, by hand, and positioned them where they need to be. This looks great - I can see all my places.
What I want to do now is create these circles programatically. I want to be able to do this so I can adjust how the spaces look (depending on game state). Eventually I'll want to be able to zoom / pan the entire game board as well.
My question is, is there a way of tagging each circle with a unique reference and then looping through and recording locations?
I'm thinking something a bit like the Javascript DOM "getElementsByTagName" or similar.
At the moment I can only see two options:
Convert each circle to a symbol and give it a unique class name so I can access it from code Go through and write down the X/Y of each circle (add to my DB of board locations that I already have) so I can plot them programatically

i've been working on a problem for a while now, which involves targeting the closest movieClip in relation to the x y coords of the mouse, I've attached a nice little acompanying graphic. Each mc added to the stage has it's own sub-class (HotSpots) which uses Pythag to measure distance from mouse. At this stage i can determine the closest value from my Main class but can't figure out how to reference it back to the movieclip... hope this makes sense. Below are the two Classes. My Main Class which attachs the mcs, and monitors mouse movement and traces closest value.[code]

Imagine two movieclips, both on the same Y axis. I want one MC to be able to diagonally move to the other MC X axis, all while making a perfect diagonal line until it reaches 100y. So just like this picture, that MC moves in a perfect diagonal until it matches the other MC.x, and 100y (no matter what, it can't go past 100y but must equal 100y). I probably made it sound more complicated than it is.

Here's the layout:I have a main SWF. Inside that main SWF is a container MC that has been rotated in 3D space to have a bit of perspective. Inside _that_ container is a container MC into which is loaded various images, videos, and SWFs. Images: no problem. Videos: no problem. The problem:If an SWF is loaded into the media MC that has an MC in it with a listener/startDrag combination allowing that MC to be dragged it seems to fail (the drag).I've tested this child SWF extensively to make sure the drag works, and I've even loaded it externally into other SWFs and it works. I've also tested in various ways to make sure that the problem isn't something simple, like an intervening clip in my main SWF keeping the MouseEvent from reaching the MC with the startDrag

i was wondering if there was something that allowed you to grab any 2d point that exists inside a movieclip and grab the 3d position of that exact point...
for example i have a rectangle movieclip on the stage .. and its rotate on the x axis 75 degrees.. registration of the clip is at bottom middle.. so when it rotates the bottom stays in the same spot and everything rotates around it..
now what if i wanted to know the exact x,y,z of the top edge of the clip..
is there a function similar to localToGlobal that would take the x,y coordinate inside the clip and spit back a global 3d point .. (i guess its called a Vector3D)

I got a working broad phase and collision detection is fast enough. Now my collision response is working, but slow. I have trace(using getTimer()) through the whole resolving method, and I found the slow spot is where I get the collision point and normal vector.
Right now, I test each point on each shape against each line on the other shape. This works nice on triangles, but other shapes, it much to slow.I would think that using SAT(seperating axis therom) would have a way to get this when checking collisions, but I cant seem to get it.I need a fast way to get the collision point and normal vector.(Right now, it takes about 3 milliseconds per collison on a rectangle with 4 points and 4 lines)

two balls are stationary on stage and I am dragging ball 1 between them. I want my program to deny the ability to do this (technical terms) and move the ball automatically to the closest point available that does not overlap either of the other two balls i.e. the left side of the dragged ball may touch but not over lap ball 3. I have a feeling the circular equation: (x-a)^2 + (Y-b)^2 = c comes into it but it may need pythagoras instead as the balls are all circular but not all the same size. The best way I can see for this is to write a multi-part equation for the bounds of boths balls and then finding the nearest point, but not sure how to do this in as3, perhaps using the 'for each' tag.

Iīd like to know if itīs possible to find a minimum y point (where the shape ends) of a shape, in a given x coordinate.
Example: I have a complex shape like a big "S". Suppose the "S" minimum x coordinate is 0. How can I find the minimum y point of the "S" (again, where the shape ends) in the x coordinate of 14?
Here is the image: I need to find the y coordinate (or point) of the blue point in the image.

how I can count the B point's coordinates (see attached image... or not as I am a new user...pf!). I know the arrow's rotation - so the angle (let's say it is -120), A's coordinates (0, 0) - A is the middle point of the arrow, and that the distance between A and B is 50 px.

I'm importing an external image, but by default the anchor point (coordinates 0,0) for the movieclip it loads into is the top left, this is obviously an issue if I want to rotate, as I need coordinates (0,0) to be the centre of the image, not the top left?

how I can access the coordinates of an mc, but its coordinates with respect to the stage.
What I am doing is using a dragging function, but while the mouse is moving I am also trying to trace the position of the mc itself with respect to its position on the stage, but it seems to keep giving me very small numbers, almost like numbers with respect to its original position. I am not sure yet though why this is. Here is my code:
[Code]....
I have also tried to get rid of the this.x = mouseX and the same for y, but then it returns the values as undefined when i trace this.x and this.y

Excuse the title, had no idea what to call this. I'm creating a simple game with the following components (added picture for clarity):
[URL]
1. Character - The symbol in the center of the stage.
2. Level - The bounds surrounding the stage. Everything in this picture is contained within the level except for the character.
3. Water - The blue square. The water symbol is located within the level symbol.
4. Water droplet - The blue dot floating above the water. This is also located within the level symbol.
Using the arrow keys the player controls the movement of the level. While the character symbol is always located at x=275, y=200 (center stage), the level symbol's coordinates change whenever the arrows are pressed. This gives the player the illusion that they are controlling the character.
When the player makes the character symbol touch the water symbol, I want to move the water droplet to the location of the character. The problem is, I can't for the life of me figure out the coordinates I need as they will always be different depending on where the character touched the water. It's important that the water droplet be inside of the level symbol because after the player drops the water I need it to act as if it's moving with the surroundings.
tl;dr: I essentially need to find the x and y distance from the character symbol to the origin of the level symbol, keeping in mind that the level symbol's location is always changing and that both symbols are located on the stage.

I'm figuring out a way to update my mouse x and y inside a loop. In this small test block, I'm tracing the mouseX and mouseY twice. The first one is outside a loop. The second one is inside a loop.
When I test the SWF, you can see that the first trace changes constantly and seamlessly. But when you hold your mouse down, the code starts tracing the 2nd trace. Even though the mouse is down and moving, the mouseX and mouseY traced is not changing.
Actionscript Code:
import flash.events.MouseEvent;import flash.events.Event;var mouseIsUp:Boolean = true;stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, mouseDown);stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP,
[Code]....
Closely related to the main question, when you click the stage, you would get 100 lines of the 2nd trace. Is there a way to break the loop as soon as the mouse is up?
