Professional :: Optimizing Flash Graphics - Use Filters Or Vectors?
Mar 28, 2011
I'm trying to lighten the load on the users' machine as much as possible. Which requires less resources: using Flash filters for Drop Shadow/Glow or creating vector shapes for the shadow/glow with the Modify > Shape > Soften Fill Edges command?

My app draws a handful of very large Shapes to the screen very frequently. I've already implemented some logic to reduce that frequency in certain situations, but I'm wondering whether there is anything else I can do.My Shapes' graphics are basically rectangles with BitmapData fills. (Smoothing's turned off.) I can use some simple logic to find the regions where their boundary rectangles intersect the Stage. If I redraw my Shapes' graphics so that they only draw to those intersections, will my app take less time to render?

I've been trying to implement and make classes out of some code that was written in the timeline by someone else; some problems have inevitably arisen. One of these problems is that I can't seem to compile a specific part of it concerning vectors, given that it tells me that there were no property definitions for the variables and that upon importing, these definitions could not be found:
[Code]....
It also tells me that Vector is not a compile-time constant, and its methods or properties could not be found. Besides this, I can't seem to find the definition for BlendMode for applying a filter with the BitmapData draw() method. Below I list the pertinent piece of code for you to be able to help me in case there's something wrong in my writing. Oh and BWT, what does this declaration mean? var i:Vector.<int>=new Vector.<int>([1,2]); I don't understand why the array brackets inside an int Vector.
[Code]....

I noticed this thing that Flash self generated graphic symbols and names it Tween1, Tween2, etc. I am not sure why it happens. Usually it happens when I tween something and then this accompanying graphic symbol appears in the library. Do I really need them, is it a flash mulfunction and I can safely delete them? why they are happening, am I making all the wrong steps in tweening and thus they appear?

Let's say I create an empty movieclip called "Test_mc", then I create an as3 class "Test_mc" like below and then I set the movieclip class to "Test_mc".
public class Test_mc extends MovieClip {
public function Test_mc() {
graphics.beginFill(0xFF0000);[code]..
Now I can drag out instances of the Test_mc into the scene and get red circles when I test the movie. The problem however, is that I can't see the circles on the canvas inside the Flash IDE. Is there a way to get these actionscript generated grapics to show up?

I've run into a bug where text (static or dynamic) is cut off when filters are applied. For example, I can create a static text object on the stage with a common font (Arial) and put some text into it, and it displays just fine. I'm putting a tween on it to gently fade it in from invisible (alpha=0%) to full (alpha=100%) and back to invisible. At this point, the text looks just fine. The trouble starts when I add a filter, like drop shadow for example. Once the filter is applied, the last character is cut off. For example, if the last word ends with an 'e', the 'e' character is lopped off vertically so only the left two thirds of the 'e' displays and the rightmost remaining third is not visible. I've tried quite a bit of adjusting things to fix this... adding multiple extra spaces at the end, increasing the size of the text box, several different fonts... nothing works except taking the filter back off. This is on the Mac version of Flash, by the way.

I just got a new laptop that is running Windows 7 (64 bit) and has Intel HD Graphics (driver version 8.15.10.2182) built in to the CPU (Intel p6000). The laptop came with Flash version 10.0.45.2. When I play HD video with this version of Flash on Youtube and on HULU, everything is fine, I can play 480p and 1080p videos at 30fps with no noticible problems (although there are occasional frame drops according to the right click menu option "Show Video Info" on Youtube, but nothing major.) Then the other day, flash told me there was a new version available, so I upgraded to 10.1.82.76.
Running this version, all HD videos on Youtube and HULU are choppy and unwatchable, according to "Show Video Info" on Youtube, I am getting only 8 fps, and the frame drops increment constantly. I unchecked "Enable hardware acceleration" in the Flash settings, but it has no effect. The only other people I can find who are having a similar problem are Mac users who are also using CPUs with Intel HD Graphics and Flash 10.1, I couldn't find anyone else complaining about this issue on Windows 7. Is anyone aware of any issues with Flash 10.1 and Intel HD Graphics on Windows 7? Will there be a future release of 10.1 that fixes this issue? Is there any workaround for this problem other then downgrading to 10.0 (which is what I am running now)?

I tried to apply a filter to a video on mobile phones and had a strange effect:
When I apply the filter to a 24 FPS source video the resulting frame-rate after applying the filter drops to about 7 FPS. But if I use a 8 FPS source video the frame-rate is even lower at about 3-4 FPS. I expected an higher, or at least equal resulting framer-rate with the 8 FPS source video. What's the reason for this behavior?
I use the Flash Player 10.1 for Android 2.2 and the Google Nexus One.

I have a question about layer effects and filters - firstly are there any way to do layer effects in flash (like in photoshop "stroke" "outter glow" etc...) also is there any sort of plug ins to do special effects - perhaps with particles, or with pretty effects that I can buy.

I've tried searching but have not succeded in finding an answer, I just hope i'm not asking something that has already been answered.ANyway , here I go.For some reason the filter option is greyed out in the motion editor ans i don't understand why, and I was hoping someone would be kind enough to enlighten me on the matter?Could it have to to with the fact that i'm apply ing the motion tween to a graphic symbol with an imbedded animation ? Should i change it to a movie clip?

It seems to me everytime I export a PSD design into flash the images come out a little pixelated. Granted I do use 72 dpi though I thought that was the webstandard. By using flash can I use higher dpi images? Or is there another method I should be using instead of the direct import to lirbary?

I'd like to port a Flash application to iPhone.I like flash for a lot of reasons and would prefer to use it for content generation. However there are a few downsides I am told, like at least 3.5 MB per app.So while using Flash would make it easier to extend the current pipeline to include iPhone content, I was wondering what other choices are there for dealing with vector assets. I'm looking to bring in assets from Flash (or illustrator) easily, be able to add placeholders that can be replaced, and package them so that they can be updated easily from iOS.
Will most likely end up outsourcing the app creation, but I would like to know what the choices are before deciding what route to go.

In Actionscript 3, you quickly learn that using vector graphics is a guaranteed way to inflict massive damage to the performance of your project. Using a combination of Bitmap, its bitmapData property and its copyPixels() method in place of all vector graphics will yield a ridiculous performance boost and is essential for people like myself developing games within Flash. Beyond this I'm not really sure what the next major things that I should be targeting and attempting to optimize are.
I do use a lot of the inbuilt trigonometry functions, but they don't seem to affect it all that much. I know there are some libraries that optimize mathematics with some approximation methods and similar, but so far I haven't found these necessary. Are there any other massive known points I should be looking at? I'm more referring to the inbuilt things that I should be careful of (like avoiding vector rendering) rather than how to improve my own coding style.

my current situation maybe akin to me painting myself into a corner. i have many vector shapes drawn with the Flash Professional CS5 IDE, which have been converted into sprite objects and exported to actionscript. for example, here are 3 shapes:
i want to programatically fill each shape with a bitmap from my library. i realize i can fill these shapes with library bitmaps in the IDE, but i need to scale the bitmaps at runtime as well as swap them out for others. how is it possible to programatically bitmap-fill shapes drawn within the IDE at runtime without having to also programatically redraw them?

I'm trying to make my first game in Actionscript 3. Its a simple artillery game where you have a gun at bottom left corner and AIs flying across the screen which you have to shoot down. Now, in a classing shooter game how this is achieved is either by firing a bullet from the gun and doing a hitTest of that bullet with the AI movieClip or by simply removing(or playing the death animation) the AI movieclip. But here's the problem. I dont wanna do either of them. I want to show a gun with a rapid fire rate and hence no bullets. And I also don't want the player to click exactly ON the AI movieclip to destroy them (just the gun/turret pointing at the correct direction should be enough). So here's what I tried. This image should help picture the whole thing.
Tried attaching a 'line' to the turret and checking for collision with AI clip. This obviously failed because of the bounding box problem when the line is slanting.
I tried putting multiple tiny movieClips ON the line and iterate through them in a loop and checking for any collision with the AI. This method partially worked, but it was too slow and didn't seem like the 'correct' method. I draw 2 hypothetical lines. One between p1 and p2 and other connecting p3 and p4 (please see the image above). p3----p4's lenght = AI.width and is a horizontal line running right through the center of the AI MovieClip. Upon mouseClick I check for any intersection between these two lines. Now if I have multiple AIs on the screen, Again i need to iterate through each of them, draw a fresh p3-----p4 and check for intersection with p1-----p2.

I have an extremely complicated (10 frames, 3 layers, around 200 objects per layer) vector object, and wish to create 5 instances of this object in my SWF simultaneously. Unsurprisingly, attempting such a feat causes my program to slow down dramatically.
I can freely combine the layers, convert to bitmap or whatever is needed, although the object is very often rotated in my ActionScript code, and is at the third layer of a much larger object. What would be the best (reasonably fast, as I need to repeat this process 10 times, on 10 seperate frames each time) way to optimise this object to increase the run speed without hitting load times too drastically? (The size of the object in question is 7x700 'pixels')...
