Actionscript 3 :: Flash CS5 Font Inconsistencies Across Windows/OSX?
Mar 22, 2012
We have multiple people working on a single project (and often even a single FLA), everyone's using Flash CS5.5 but some users are running Windows whilst others OSX. I've noticed that some Fonts appear differently when moving a FLA from OSX to Windows or vice versa. In particular, the vertical gutter will often be larger on Windows and sometimes even the leading will be significantly increased.
Published SWFs appear fine across both systems, it's only when you edit an unpublished FLA in the IDE or re-publish it that you notice the difference. I'll also add that this doesn't occur across all fonts and as far as I'm aware, I've only noticed it on the OTF file type (the Helvetica Neue LT family is one such example). And of course, all users have installed the same version of the font.
The problem exists regardless of whether the TextField has been added to the editor or programatically. TLF TextFields don't appear to exhibit this problem, however, we already have an extensive library built up that utilises the old TextField class so migrating to TLF isn't preferable.
This is incredibly frustrating as files move back and forth frequently and it basically boils down to telling users of one OS to ignore the alignment issues because they won't exist when published from the other system. Does anyone have any theories as to why this could be happening or how to get around it?
I am having some consistency problems with my flash application, when I echo out variables for flash to get, it doesn't always pick up what PHP is sending, it seems to vary from PC to PC.I am getting info from a database, and I need to pass it to flash, say for instance I need to send through 5 variables $uid,$name,$points,$from,$page , how could I go about sending these from PHP to flash using AMFPHP?
I'm developing a Flash AIR app mostly on Windows Vista, but recently tried to do a little light editing on my MBP running Snow Leopard as I have access to the excellent jEdit text editor there. Unfortunately, the Windows Consolas font I have chosen for on-screen error messages, tool tips, etc seems to have issues with displaying properly in the Mac version of Flash CS4.
Consolas displays well in Flash CS4 editor mode (and other Mac apps like Text Edit), but as soon as I try and test the Flash file, the font basically explodes, drawing huge black triangles all over the screen. The app continues to work properly, but it's almost impossible to use as everything is covered in triangles. I tried clearing the font caches already as well as deleting the ASO files/test movie.
I've flex application and am using arial font family. My problem is, arial fonts are shown up in windows while on Mac, it's been replaced with Times New Roman. (Arial font is there on both systems).
Does anyone have any clue why the formatting of the contents of a .txt file dumped into a TextField would differ when the same file is loaded locally (during testing) versus remotely (when the project is deployed on a server)?The .txt file has simple HTML formatting that is set by a stylesheet (creating 100% in Flash, so it's not a stylesheet issue), but the paragraph breaks are much bigger when viewed online versus when tested locally.
I have a set of dynamic textfields created and loaded with text at runtime. When I go to print them they print OK but on close inspection you can see that the printed version has words dropping down a line compared to the version on the screen!
I have tried different align settings for the text, system fonts and embedded fonts, cacheAsBitmap the textfields, printAsBitmap=true option, all to no effect.
The only thing that has worked is by drawing the texfields to a bitmapdata and printing that instead. This produces an exact copy of the screen version but the printed quality is very bad and unacceptable.
I'm pretty sure its not a procedural error in my code as the bitmapdata version is made in the same flow. So could it be a quirk in Textfield or TextFormat, or a quirk in PrintJob?
I want develop an application on windows mobile.In this app, i need to show some Flash games to the end user.ow should I do?embed an Flash ActiveX Control (in Windows mobile Form application) ?embed an IE control?BTW (because i do not have a windows mobile device now)Can I views flash in IE of the windows mobile device?for play flash, Macromedia Flash Player 7 for Pocket PC should be installed on your windows mobile emulator.DIT2:after practice i found following package should be installed before your windows mobile progr
Vista SP2 Visual Studio 2008 SP1 Windows Mobile Device Center
I'm trying to build a calculator in Flex / actionscript 3 but have some weird results using the class Math :
trace(1.4 - .4); //should be 1 but it is 0.9999999999999999 trace(1.5 - .5); //should be 1 and it is 1 trace(1.444 - .444); //should be 1 and it is 1 trace(1.555 - .555); //should be 1 but it is 0.9999999999999999
I know there are some issues with floating point numbers, but as you can see, it should at least fail for all of my examples, am I right?How the problem is solved in other calculators and how should I proceed in order to build a usable calculator in Actionscript 3 .
I am working on a short animated story, which has a scrubbable timeline and chapter headings. I used TimelineMax for sequencing it. For the most part, it is working fine. I am seeing some strange behavior that pop up, though: sprites disappear, functions stop responding to user input, seams of the sprites become transparent -- all small issues but pretty hard to nail down because they happen in Mac only.
So I am wondering what is wrong with Flash, and why it misbehaves on a Mac?
I'm trying to embed a font in my project by using url("font.ttf") rather than local("Font Name"), but it doesn't seem to pick it up. The font in question is called "Gotham Bold". When i view the details of the font, the font weight is regular, however when i use local("Gotham Bold") in the css i have to specify fontWeight: bold or else it wont pick it up. But when I use url("folderGotham-Bold.ttf"), and specify fontWeight: bold, it says that font weight is not found for that TTF. If i remove the fontweight, there's no errors, but the font is not applied to the text.
In my application I'm using a custom embedded font for English (Helvetica New) which does not contain characters (glyphs) for chinese unicode range. In the application, wherver chinese characters are avaiable they are not displayed (suppressed) since they are missing in the custom embedded font. How can I make the flash player to use a fallback system font for the missing characters? And the fallback should be for the missing characters alone. For the Engligh characters it should use the embedded font.
I am working on a as3 project in which the user select a font from Combo Box and that font SWF should be loaded Dynamically and then i need to change the font of the Dynamic text field.
I have swf font files downloaded from [URL]
My question is that how can i load the font swf dynamically from server and add them to the library and how can i use that swf to change the font of dynamic text field.
if there are embedded fonts in library the i can access them using this- --
var fontList:Array = Font.enumerateFonts(); for( var i:int=0; i<fontList.length; i++ ) { trace( "font: " + fontList[ i ].fontName ); }
But How to use dynamically loaded Font swf as a font type.
I have a swf A, which contains no font.If I download into it the swf F1, which contains few characters of Arial, then I'll have the arial font embed into A, no problem with that.But if, then, I download the swf F2, which contains other characters of Arial into swf A, will I be able to use all the embed characters font, only the F2, or only the F1 ?I'd like to have a link to somewhere where this is explained, even in very technical terms : I wasn't able to find one.
EDIT : After few tests, it seems that the player replace the loaded font... How can I merge them, then ?
Is it possible to embed a font in Flash and have it displayed as though it was a device font? In other words, can embedded fonts be aliased?Using the bitmap-text option doesn't work, Flash tends to screw up a lot of the character spacing. I haven't found any pixel fonts that mimic Arial, Verdana and Tahoma accurately. Setting the stage quality to low does alias the fonts but they become fragmented.Using device fonts is an option but, as far as I understand, some browsers/operating systems will take it upon themselves to anti-alias the text.
I'm having an issue with the PDF displaying outside the viewable area of the mx:HTML control in Flex. When the application starts up - the mx:HTML is set to a certain size, but can be enlarged if the application is maximized. These are the following conditions to replicate it: Issue only happens in Windows (Windows 7, not on Mac) Issue only happens with Reader X installed (not with previous versions) Issue only happens when running the built app, does not happen in debug / development mode from FlashBuilder
I'm running ant to compile a Flex application, and the build keeps failing when running it on a windows command line. Other people in my team can successfully run the very same build under mac and linux. This is the error shown in the command prompt:
[Code]...
All tokens are set in corresponding build.properties and filter .properties files (and, as I said before, it compiles perfectly under mac and linux). The windows version is 7 Ultimate, FLEX_HOME is set as an environment variable to the Flex SDK 3.5 (the 3.5.0.12683 build that comes with Adobe Flash Builder Burrito). ${compiler.fork} is set to false, to avoid an issue with the SDK and the source files being in different logic drives.
I'm using Flex in Flash Player 10 on Windows, using FileReference to load a file into memory, as below.My issue is that when a file is locked by Windows, my FileReference is not giving me any feedback that the file is inaccessible--it simply never dispatches any events after my calling load().Does anyone have insight into how to tell that Flash Player is unable to open the file?
var fileReference:FileReference = new FileReference(); private function onClick():void { fileReference = new FileReference(); fileReference.addEventListener(Event.SELECT, onSelect);
From an Adobe Air application, I need a function to launch the Windows Virtual Keyboard (c:windowssystem32osk.exe). I tried the Native Process, but it didn't work when telling it to execute cmd.exe /C osk.exe. How should I launch the keyboard application from an Adobe Air application?
I have a mp4 file which is to be used in an application. Currently i am in the stage of figuring out the technology to be used for this job. I am familiar with flex and am hoping that i be able to use it for the application. But i can not figure out a way to play the file in flex. I have been able to play the file only in windows media player and that required the installation of three codecs : Mp4Audio.ax, Mp4Video.ax, Mp4Src.ax.
As i see it, it will be very convenient if i could embed a windows media player plugin in flex or i could specify the audio and video codecs in the flash player
I have a flex application (.swf) and want to create a projector file. When I choose File-> create projector I get the .app file because I work on a Mac. I know I can create both projector formats for windows and mac using the export feature in Flash Professional. But this is not an option since it's Flex.Is there any other way rather than switching to windows to create the file?
I want to provides an option in my air/flex application. A user can check an option and the application starts when windows starts.I don't find with google how to do this, someone knows do that ?
does anyone have an idea or developed before windows authentication through flex application.I have a semi solution when user enters his/her AD username and password, and application send this data to web service which handles AD authentication, but this is one extra step which will give full comfort for users.
we're having a strange problem on a project here. When we use NetConnection in combination with a NetGroup to initiate communication between two local AIR applications on Windows XP, they always both connect to the NetGroup succesfully and detect each other as neighbors. However, on Windows 7 both applications connect succesfully to the NetConnection and NetGroup both don't detect each other as neighbors.To reproduce this problem, here are two AIR applications:[code]
These applications can connect and send message to each other without a problem on Windows XP. On Windows 7 however, they cannot.Does anyone know why this wouldn't work on Windows 7 and what steps can be taken to make it work? It's critical to our project that this works.In some cases, the applications take quite a long time to detect each other as neighbors (up to 15 seconds in some cases), in other cases they detect each other immediately. Does anyone know what could cause this delay?
In my application, I allow the user to change the font of a text field. They use a combobox component to select the font. Can I change the font of each individual label in the combobox to match the font it is named? Like, Microsoft Word style.
I have a strange issue where a dynamic text field will not show a bold version of a font (Gerstner BQ) if the regular version is on the stage in a static text field.Remove the static text field and the dynamic text field displays the bold font correctlyI have created a test FLA to reproduce this and by turning the layer with the static text field on and off (Publish settings -> Flash -> include hidden layers [unchecked]), the issue is quite clearhis issue is so big for me that I have had to abandon a project in CS5 and start again in CS4 just to work around this.
I'm using Flex 4. I'm trying to apply a embedded font in all Alert components of the application, to get the same style that all the app, of course. I code in my CSS file:
[Code]...
The font-family worked to all componentes, but not to the Alert component. In alert the text message and title got unvisible. If I change to other font-family it works correctly, just the embedded font doesn't work on Alert component. Anyone got this problem? Obs: The embedded font worked in all the app, just the Alert no.
I have generated an swf file that contains my embedded font of specified Unicode range, then I am loading this swf into my application. The code in the generated file for the font, automatically registers the font using the Font.registerFont method. I then load this swf file into my application, I never add it to the display list, I just created an instance of the file so that the code is executed to register the font.
Then I use the font name when I create embedded text fields and there you go it works... well it used to, I am not having any luck at the moment though. Sometimes it displays fine, other times it all appears cut off and I see a few pixels of the text I am trying to display.... Anyone else had a similar issue? Know what it might be? I have created a class below that I am using for the embedded font text, any issues people see with this?
