It pulls a library item out of the library and puts it on stage programmatically. No big deal, except that in order to get the image displayed on the screen to actually update, I had to removeChild() and then addChild() it back. Is there another way to force the screen to redraw?

Here's some code I created as an answer to another question. It pulls a library item out of the library and puts it on stage programmatically. Note that in this example, this code is on frame 1 of the timeline. It _feels_ like imageClip is not a direct reference to the thing that's actually on the display list. However, when I modified my code to replace the reference to the AS variable imageClip with a more direct reference to the element on the stage (imageClip = getChildAt(1)), that made no difference either.

I'm trying to make a basic mouesover and mouseout that will display a help/key box on the screen. I created the help box that will be displayed as a symbol called helpbox. I updated the linkage to export to Actionscript and called the class Helpme. The object I'm using to instantiate the Helpme class is a small graphic called helpcoast. I want the "helpbox" in the new class "Helpme" to be displayed only when the mouse is over the helpcoast graphic. When I test the movie and mouse over and mouse out of the graphic once, I get no errors, but if I mouse over it, then off it, then back over again, I get this error in the output box:

I have an app w/ a login screen. When the user hits "enter", the state changes to "login" & a child component is triggered to load (though the child stays invisible at the moment). The child contains many functions that the user needs upon logging in (ie their screenname & settings are retrieved from a database). The following is included in 'Parent':

<mx:Button label="logout" click="currentState='Default'"/>

My problem is when a user logs out (state changes to 'Default') & then logs back in (state changes back to 'login') the child doesn't get "triggered" again & the functions w/in the child don't reload. Is there a way to force my child to refresh?

Note: While it would be easier to just move the child's functions to the parent it is complex...I moved these functions to the child to make it easier to follow

UPDATE: I even tried adding an "exitState" to my state:

<s:State name="login" exitState="removeElement(localComp)" />

This doesn't work either, as I get an error: "RangeError: Index 0 is out of range."

UPDATE: Even though you are allowed to call a child's function from a parent, my problem is that the child needs to be "created" in order to not show errors. It makes no sense to me why the flex team would make something like removing & adding children so complicated.

Suppose I have a component and want to change it's focus color at runtime. Here's an example for you (I've excluded any buttons and such to prevent component from losing it's focus, cause in that case it changes it's color perfectly):

When the list item label is changed, the list doesn't redraw until I hover the mouse over changed item. I've tried invalidate & redraw but they didn't work:

How to force the list to redraw in this case?

I have a tree control with a custom item renderer. The item renderer has different states that should be set while an item is being dragged over the item renderer. I understand from reading this post [URL] that the 'right way' to do this is to override the 'getCurrentState' method and append some text. I do that.

Now in my tree control I handle the drag over event and get a reference to the itemrenderer that is being dragged over and I set the boolean 'dragOver' property to true. Now I just need to force my itemRenderer to redraw. I can't figure that out. A workaround, is to just set the currentState of the itemRenderer.

how can I force my itemRenderer to refresh? (and I've tried calling validateNow, invalideDisplayList/Properties/Size, to no avail)

I create a custom component to override the linkButton to make it behave that if an exist value is found, it would shown as "Added".

By default the button label is "Add to cart", I could not make the button become "Added" after trying many trial and error on uHandler which I suppose, COMPLETE, ENTER_FRAME, CREATION_COMPLETE could not even update the label.

i have a swf with several processor intensive subroutines within a main init() routine at start up (about a 5 secs startup wait). it needs a preloader not due to asset loads but to the processor intensive routines.i'm trying to create a preloader that will display progress as the routines complete but when i try to write text to text field as each subroutine completes either the textField.text is not updated or the text field display is not updated after each subroutine finishes.this prevents me from tracking the progress of the start up.

is there a way to force an update to the display list in the middle of a processor intensive routine? i believe flash is supposed to update after each frame but i'm not seeing this.also, the text field i'm displaying *before* this processor intensive routine *does* display when running locally but *does not* display before the routine when running online.not sure why.

For example, I have a function that is triggered by a button click This function loads an external swf.I then set a global variable swfLoaded to true, with the idea of having an if condition that executes removeChild(loader) if swfLoaded is true.When trying to execute removeChild(loader), I get an error telling me that it must be the child of the caller.I've seen the code below, which loads a default swf, but I don't want a default swf - I just want one loaded if the button is clicked, and then if another button is clicked, the original one to be removed before the next swf is loaded.How do I make this code work without loading a default swf, just loading one once someone clicks a button, and then removing it?

I'm making an application for the iPad that allows me to swipe movieClips that are 1024 x 768.The application starts with movieClip1, movieClip2 and movieClip3 added to the stage.When you swipe to the left... they are to move to the left. When a movieClip is off the stage to the left... I want to removeChild and then addChild the next one in the queue to the right of the visible clip. This will provide a seamless swiping experience.

I first noticed it when this function started throwing a 1009 error:

were throwing the 1009 error. Which is wierd on two accounts. First, if I remember right, error 1009 comes about when referering to an object that is not on the stage. Which makes NO sence when getting it from an addChild! Second, this error only starts to occur the second time I use the function.

I am putting together my file right now which is now using visual elements purely added and removed via AS3 (addChild / removeChild) methods.My question is just about the proper time / place to declare their variables.Can I declare them all at the start of the movie (frame 1) and just call them when I need them, or is it better to declare them on the frames that they are introduced on? I guess the question is really, will I ever lose those variables throughout the movie once they are declared?

I am doing a project in which I need to open and close MovieClips. I have my Scene1 which loads the first MC (named "page1") then page1 plays and I would like it to unload itself and load the MC named "Page2" and so on up to page 10 ...

On the last frame of the MC "page1" I have this code:

I'm in the right place for this plea from yet another novice trying to learn AS3 in Flash with a couple of very good books but no one to talk to about it - and in danger of losing hair in the process.

My problem: I have a web site containing 8 pages. Each page is a separate movie clip, and each is in a Labeled frame. My intention is to have an overlay for each of the buttons in the top left panel of the home page. On the positive side I have managed to achieve the dynamic placement of an instance of a library movie clip called "sampleAR" via addChild to overlay on top of my home page. But I can't for the life of me get removeChild to rid me of the wretched thing again. My home page is in frame 1 of the movie labeled "Home". This contains a movie clip with the instance name "HomePage" on the stage. Inside the "HomePage" movie clip is my script sitting at the end where the movie stops in frame 44.

I have just started with creating Drawing Pad, which can save and reload the image drawn once. I have completed the basic interface which includes drawing and erasing part. I am storing the co-ordinates in a text file. I am using MultiDimensional Array to store X,Y co-ordinates. But now I am facing a problem that how to load these variables into the flash back and using these redraw the image. I am writing a program in AS3 that gradually draws a line following some points on a bitmap.  Firstly I draw the bitmap on the screen ( load into a sprite, add the loader to the sprite and the sprite to the screen) Then I draw the line on it segment by segment.( add an empty Sprite to the screen and then do lots of lineTos)Sometimes my line drawing process goes wrong and I was hoping to see where this happens, but Flash Player 10 seems to have some clever optimisation, so that it waits to put the display on the screen until after it has calculated all of the sections of the lines.  This means that if it goes wrong it never displays the picture, and I cannot see what is going on. This is very frustrating when I use the debugger in Flash as it does not even refresh the screen when it reaches a break point how to turn this optimisation off and force it to draw stuff onto the screen as it is calculated.

I have a main class that calls and removes screens with addChild and removeChild, these screens are movie clips.My issue lies in these movie clips, each clip is linked to a class - e.g. confidence.as links to my confidence screen.I am trying to add buttons and pieces of text from this class file onto the confidence screen, so essentially adding more movieclips on top of a movieclip that has already been added. I keep getting this error:TypeError: Error #2007: Parameter child must be non-null.I could do with some help figuring out how to add objects to my screens, as I am trying to prevent having everything in one class.
