Given a MovieClip containing a vectorshape (loaded from the library) - is there a way to check whether a line (from point(x1,y2) to point(x2,y2) intersects this shape?

I'm making a very simple game that lets you draw a curve by hand (using lineTo to the mouse position on mousemove) but now, I need to check wether the line intersects wiith another part of the same line (e.g. a loop)

I first used an onrollover command, and that worked, but not always because the mouse moved too fast (same with hittest with mouse). Then I pre-drawed the line in another mc, used hittest on it, and if it wasn't intersecting, draw it in the real mc. But that didn't work because it used the bounds to test. I guess the best way is to use some mathematical formula, but that would mean I have to save all my coordinates in an array..

I am using flash as3.I have some shapes I have drawn on the screen. They are made using:

graphics.beginFill(0x00ff00);
graphics.drawRect(0,0,50,50);
graphics.endFill();

to draw them. I am using AS2 with Flash 8 Professional So, my problem is that I currently have a man in the middle of the screen, who shoots a line towards the mouse when I click. However, when I use hitTest to see if the line collides with another object, Flash recognizes the line as a large box if it is diagonal, so the hitTest isn't very accurate. The line only satys there for one frame, so I can't have the usual moving-bullet-style. I am either looking for a way to create an imaginary line with AS from the starting point to the mouse and beyond, and tell whether or not this line intersects with an object... or some other way that I haven't thought of to fix my problem. Keep in mind that the line rotates from a center point towards anywhere around it for 360 degrees.

When I create a new object (a new unit), and draw it to the screen (Flash does all the work there), the point at which it's first placed is considered its origin. That is, getX and getY will return the distance from that point... Why is that? Or how can I stop this?

I have been looking at how to reflect a point in a line, and found this question which seems to do the trick, giving this formula to calculate the reflected point:

Given (x,y) and a line y = ax + c we want the point (x', y') reflected on the line.

Set d:= (x + (y - c)*a)/(1 + a^2)
Then x' = 2*d - x
and y' = 2*d*a - y + 2c

However there are two problems with this implementation for my needs:

My line is not described in the form y = ax + c (so I'd have to translate it, which is easy to do, but it means the process is slower). What if a is infinity ie. a vertical line?

Is there a simple way to calculate (x', y'), the reflection of point (x, y) in a line, where the line is described by the two points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2)?

Edit:

I've found a formula which does this, but it seems as though it does not work with lines that look like they have equation y = x.

I have drawn a series of lines using flash's graphics.lineTo command, and placed them in an array to be referenced later. Based on certain user interactions, the clips that hold these lines can be shifted to the right, causing the lines to move with them, no longer connecting to the point they originally connected to. So I need to extend the lines by the amount their parent clip was shifted (I've called this incVal). So what I need to do is find the point at which each of these lines ended at, and draw from that point to the left by incVal. How do I get that ending point of the line?

I've for a while now been trying to work out an efficient way to see if something is in something else's line of sight. A good example is having a sphere that fires a rocket at you if it can see you - but obviously not if you're behind a wall.

Here's how I generally went about doing this:

Works, but as we know this will get extremely slow with each new rocket added or as the amount of impassable objects increases.

I'm assuming there's a really simple efficient way that I'm missing - I mean, all games do it (Diablo, etc) with hundreds of enemies that don't do anything unless you're visible.

trace(mc.getChildAt(0).y);

now get inside a movieclip and move that shape around (away from registration point) for example above registration point, or wherever and output will always be 0.

i can set color of shape easily via shape.transform.colorTransform..... etc its unbeleiveable, what color is already filled in a shape??

i know, i can draw a bitmap on top of it and get pixel data from that... but

1- it seems lengthy approach ( lazy enough, don't want to write few more lines)

2- it confuses, because if i don't want to get color from pixel but i know one flat color is filled?? but shape is strange / arbitrary / random... how can i confirm that specific pixel has some color or not??

i just wanted to know what flat color is filled inside a shape(very edgy...)

I have a single point and a set of shapes. I need to know if the point is contained within the compound shape of those shapes. That is, where all of the shapes intersect.But that is the easy part.If the point is outside the compound shape I need to find the position within that compound shape that is closest to the point.These shapes can be of the type:squarecirclering (circle with another circle cut out of the center)inverse circle (basically just the circular hole and a never ending fill outside that hole, or to the end of the canvas is there must be a limit to its size)part of circle (as in a pie chart)part of ring (as above but lineThe example below has an inverted circle (the biggest circle with grey surrounding it), a ring (topleft) a square and a line.

I am trying to draw a line that goes from point A to Point B. Along the way there are objects (of any shape) that force the line to go around them in order to reach point B. It cant go through them. This is like directing someone using a map. You can only draw a line between the blocks / along the streets.

I tried that using collision tests. Fine, I can now find the coordinates at that instance, but I still cant get the line to go around the object before proceeding to point B.

I have a line that is being drawn following a route when a play button is pushed. At the end of the movieclip the whole route is shown with the beginning and end. How do I clear that line if the user hits play again? Right now it connects the beginning and ending points and creates another line on top of the old one.

Basically, I'll have several dynamically created mc's and want to be able to click and drag to select several of them at once.I have it so I can drag to draw a square and I have the x/y coords of my mc's.
