I've configured Flash Debug player to log trace messages from my Flex application to the flashlog.txt file.I can see trace() messages from my own code, thats ok.
However, would also like to see also trace messages from Fle SDK. I use Flex SDK ver. 4.1, and, for example, I would like to have trace message trace("app initialize app"); which is placed in function initialize() in mx/core/Application.as file in the SDK.
What I need to do? Should I recompile SDK somehow or is there a compiler switch to enable this? I'm a beginner in Flex, so I'm sorry if this question sounds silly.

I wanted an animation to dispatch custom events as it cycled. It became apparent that not even trace() was running. After some searching, I found the following at Adobe:[URL].."If the SWF file contains any ActionScript code, Flex prints a warning during compilation and then strips out the ActionScript from the embed symbol. This means that you can only embed the symbol itself."
I also found a work-around by Grant Skinner at:[URL].. I can proceed, but I'm still wondering. Why does mxmlc strip ActionScript from Flash compiled resources when embedding their symbols into Flex apps using metatags?

When I'm making projects with Flex (or Flash Builer) the end result usually performs much better than a similar level project made with the Flash authoring tool. I know Flash IDE is rather for animations and design heavy works so you can't really compare these 2 tools, but this question is bugging me for a long time.If apps made with Flex (or Flash Builder) are really faster and less CPU intensive - why is that?

What would be the best way to secure .net web services used by a flex application (both desktop and browser) that requires login? I thought about requesting the user and password in every method of the web service, and having them stored as variables in the flex app, but I don't feel like this is the most elegant way.

m working on an Adobe Flex application that loads lots of Flex Modules and other Flash sub-applications and Flash resources. Each time one successfully loads the flashlog.txt and Flex Console show a trace like "[SWF] filename.swf - [filesize] bytes after decompression". Specifically:[SWF] Main.swf - 1,361,299 bytes after decompression [SWF] core/Core.swf - 516,390 bytes after decompression
I don't want to disable traces because I am debugging, but these traces are rather noisy. How can I suppress only the [SWF] loaded traces?

I have a Flex application which uses the BrowserManager class for enabling deep linking within the application. The URLs work fine through all browsers but the back/forward buttons work only with Firefox and Internet Explorer. Even that is a bit flaky and sometimes doesn't work. The buttons don't work in Chrome/Safari or any other browser. How to make this work properly?

I have a system where clients connect via http streaming channels and use Producer and Consumer classes to dispatch and receive messages. I need to test the latency of messages in a way that adequately simulates real-world usage when the server is under load. I have 3 ideas for how this may be accomplished. Has anyone tried and succeeded or failed with these methods?

I'm trying to create a Flex based internet application with an EJB layer in the server. This layer provides the XML used by the flex application. It uses the Cairngorm architecture.Currently, on an error I call the handler function defined in all the command files. How can I centralize this?My idea is to create a XML file that contains all the error messages and the types of error message eg:- Warning, Error etc. In the error handler, I will call the error handling function and pass a unique id which in turn will display the error message defined in the xml config file. Do I need to load this XML file in the Model layer of the application itself and store them as say global variables?

I'm working on a flex 3 application which will initially support only one language (which is not English) but may need to support English and other languages later. So I'm using the standard localization technique, with resource bundles. Now, somewhere I use the validators like EmailValidator which have some error messages displayed, these are in english and come with the flex sdk. How do I localize those messages?

I am completely new to the whole FlashDevelop/Flash/etc toolchain, but wanted to do some experimenting. I installed FlashDevelop and Flex SDK on my laptop, and thinks worked out just fine, except for one thing: the compiler messages are localized! Messages like "gebruik van een niet-gedefinieerde eigenschap" (Dutch.. sort of) are limiting my productivity. I don't recognize them because they look nothing like what I'm used to in any other programming environment, as a proper sentence they make even less sense than English error messages, and I certainly can't google them properly. Now I've already seen there are a couple of xml files and java/mxmlc/fcsh/etc configs I can tweak, but nothing so far helped.

I am using Google AppEngine, in conjunction with PyAMF to provide RemoteObject support. In my Flex code I make several RemoteObject method calls at once which tends to batch the AMF Messages into a single HTTP request. Most of the time this is fine but AppEngine applies some strict per request limits (in this case I am hitting a DeadlineExceededError - max 30 seconds). A number of service methods are expected to take upwards of 10 seconds and if these are batched by the RemoteObject into 1 HTTP you see where this is going. Now you could say refactor your service calls and that is also going on but not really the question being asked here. Is there a way to prevent Flex RemoteObject from batching AMF requests for situations like this? I have done a fair amount of Googling on the subject and come up with bupkis. It seems to me that I would need to implement a custom version of mx.messaging.channels.AMFChannel or something of that nature, which seems waay too hardcore for a feature like this

i'm looking for a possibility to log messages in my flex 4.5 Project. This should cover errormessages in remoteClasses, errorHandler or messages typing by hand. After reading a lot of webpages, the solution from parslay looks good. i want to switch to this framework anyway. the benefit is the possibility to configure the logging behavior at runtime. but i don't understand the documentation. perhaps because I'm brandnew in parsley. Also google has no fitting result.

I have a Flex/BlazeDS webapp (pseudo content management system) with a Java backend running on 2 Weblogic 10.3 servers for load balancing and HA purposes.Basically, I'm using AMF polling to update my app such that when a user opens a document from the search results, the corresponding row will display a locked icon across all user displays that currently have that document on the screen.
The problem I have is that if a user connected to Server A opens up document X, the locked icon will only appear on the screens of other users connected to Server A. The displays of users connected to Server B will not be updated. Is there any established paradigm or best practice to ensure that the locked update will propagate across all servers?

New AS3/Flash Builder user here. I'm debugging an AS3 project using Flash Builder 4.5, and debug version of Flash plug-in in Firefox. I'm using a trace() command, but it's not outputting anything in the Console window of Flash Builder (is that where it's supposed to place stuff?). However, I'm wondering why the trace() command is even needed because the Variables tab in the debug perspective contains all the variable values anyway. Is the trace() command redundant or otherwise useful somehow in this environment, or is it intended for command line debugging, etc. (non-Flash Builder environment).

I'm going to write an application with the Air/Flex-Framework. I'm looking for Best Practise and general Design Patterns for designing software especially in Air/Flex. I have experience with this framework but never had the pleasure to write a piece of software from scratch.
For instance: I stumbled across lots of software written in Air/Flex with nearly infinity global vars Most of the software I saw was not object-oriented How can I pack the asynchronous method calls nicely?
I'm familiar with general design patterns by gamma. I'm looking more for advise in designing good quality software with Adobe Air/Flex.

I've built a simple application in Flex Builder 3 with some trace() calls. It's an "ActionScript Project", no MXML or AIR involved. I don't run the app from within Eclipse, I just open the generated html file with Firefox.
I'm using the Flash Player 10 Debug version. I've correctly set mm.cnf to log trace output, following the official instructions. A flashlog.txt file is generate in the appropriate location.
Despite all that, trace output is not shown in the log file. What am I doing wrong?
(I suspect it's a compiler option, but I can find no such option in the project options in FlexBuilder)
(If I do run the app from Eclipse, by pressing F11, I can see trace output but only inside Eclipse, not in the log file)

I have two web applications written in Flex I would like to integrate. I would like one Flex app (let's call it application A) to invoke second Flex app (let's call it application B). Application A has access only to swf file of application B (not source code). When application A invokes application B, it should be able to pass some data to application B. After application B is invoked it should be able to pass some data back to application A. These two applications will be hosted on the same server, but will use different server code.
The easiest way of implementing this (or one of the ways to be more precise) would be to have UI element on app A (button, link, menu item, etc) that would invoke app B. But in that case, two Flex applications couldn't communicate directly (since only one is active at a time), and they would have to communicate through server code, which is something I would like to avoid.
In short application A should invoke application B, pass some data to it. Application B should do it's work, display some content, and have a mean of passing some data back to application A. I'm aware of LocalConnection, and I've seen similar question, but in that case I would have to have both application in the same browser window. This would be acceptable to some extend, but only if app B is contained in app A (not if they are both on the same HTML page). Would LocalConnection work in that case?
Do you have any recommendations on how to implement this kind of communication?

I have an AIR application that is packaged with a network appliance and that is used to configure that network appliance...much like a the embedded webservers on home routers except this is an installed AIR app.
If I want to communicate with the appliance on a port higher that 1024, do I need that appliance to serve up a socket policy file or is AIR considered a trusted sandbox. All the info I find relates to Flash Player and the web, but this particular AIR app is communicating in a closed environment.

we try to develop a flash game engine with several abstraction layers. This flex project contains: an Application (1)-> loading a class (2)-> loading another class (3) which instanciates a Flex component (4).
The loadings uses SWFLoader. The last Flex component (4) is just a Group with AdvancedDataGrid. We do not define skins so I suppose it must take default skin. The problem is that during execution, an error is throwed because default skin for components cannot be found in the Flex component (4). In our case, for the AdvancedDataGrid:
Error #1007: Instantiation attempted on a non-constructor.In mx.controls::AdvancedDataGridBaseEx. The guilty command is: getStyle("headerSeparatorSkin"); which returns null
For the moment, we found two solutions :
the first solution is to add the attribute headerSeparatorSkin="spark.skins.SparkSkin" into the AdvancedDataGrid of the Flex component .
