Does it run in a separate thread or the main loop? If the latter, does that mean that the Timer might not be called if the main loop is in a long-running action?More generally, what can you tell me about threads running in ActionScript? My once-a-minute Timer is called if an event-handler runs for minutes, so it is not the case that all ActionScript runs in one thread.

I am aware that Action Script does not provide multithreading so when writing flex application we are limited to work on one thread. which is ok for rendering my UI.

However some questions arise when preferring flex over silverlight:

As a UI layer single thread is good enough but is it fair to assume that for Aync httpservice like operations in flex , internally it would use some worker threads to manage the async operation and then come back to the main thread ? it looks like it does since my UI does not freeze.Can the flex/flash player deal with multiple httpservice calls in parallel ? ( e.g more than one section of the UI loading data at the same time.)How about the animation stuff ( e.g the parallel animation ) - does flash player internally leverages some threading for accelerating graphics or is it all done on the UI thread ?

Multithreading :: Player In A Delphi TWebBrowser Control To A Background Thread?

I have a Delphi 6 Pro program with a TWebBrowser component that loads a web page that embeds a Cool Iris Wall. The Cool Iris wall is an SWF object which means that when running, the execution happens inside the Adobe Flash player, an ActiveX or similar object I believe. The problem I am having is that sometimes when the Wall is loading pictures/videos from the web, it takes a big hit on the CPU on the main UI thread. I know that TWebBrowser moves most of its operations on to a background thread to keep the main UI thread happy, but something the Adobe Flash Player is doing is happening on the main UI thread and its causing my program much grief. Is there a way to move the Adobe Flash Player on to a background thread?

[UPDATE - 12/7/2010] - After a marathon probing and debugging session it turns out that the problem had to do with the Cool Iris Wall's Flickr proxy. You can interface with the Wall in two main ways: 1) You pass them special Flickr api protocol URLs and let them talk to Flickr for you, for example [URL]..loads the Wall with the results of a Flickr keyword search for puppy. The advantage to this approach is that they do all the work for you necessary to make the query to Flickr and build the Wall's contents. 2) You build an RSS media feed yourself containing the photo stream item data and feed it to the Wall.

I was using technique #1. The problem is with #1 is that when their servers have trouble building the Flickr feed for you (for whatever unknown reason), their host SWF puts a heavy load on the CPU interfering with the main UI thread's operation. I converted my entire code base to work directly with the Flickr API and create the feed myself using the second technique and the problem vanished.

I'm working on a set of SWFs that need to sync with each other using LocalConnection in AS2It was working fine in Flash Player 10, but as 10.1 throttles Flashes when they are not visible, the SWFs lose their sync if any of the SWFs are not visible on the page.This is particularly annoying as we were not aware of this new behaviour in 10.1 and I expect the update will break a lot of similar websites.

I'm having trouble with some TIMER EVENTS here and I really don't know how to proceed.I've got a lot of instances of TimerEvents in my code, all triggered by TIMER (myTimer.start() method). They work nice however, somehow, some of them simply freezes and it doesn't continue to execute the timer event function.I'm using about 80 papervison3D cube instances and all within by jiglib rigidbody.

How would I go about using a timer to initiate multiple movie clips at once, and then loop them if they are all different lengths so that they restart in sync once more?

For example, say at t=0, 3 movie clips are started. Movie clip 1 is 3 seconds long. Movie clip 2 is 6 seconds long. Movie clip 3 is 10 seconds long. Movie clip 1 would end before movie clip 2 and 3, but I don't want it to restart until the others are both finished.

Furthermore, is it possible to set a countdown so that the the movie clips are initiated not after a duration, but after a specific time? For example, instead of having a timer countdown from 10 seconds and then playing, it instead countdowns until say 12:00 PM and then plays the movie clip.

I want to access a webservice:getMonitorData() , on creationcomplete and returns an array, in an infinite loop so that the getIndex0.text is updated each time.Flex is not able to handle an infinite loop and gives a timeout error 1502. If I run the for loop until i<2000 or so it works fine.How can replace the loop so that my webservice is accessed continiously and the result is shown in getIndex0.text.This is how my application looks like:

I am working on a gallery, the contents of which is arranged into categories and sub-categories. So, each category has a folder and sub-folders.

I have an xml file in the root directory which I'm using to create a menu. When the visitor clicks a button in the menu, the relevant set of images will appear (only one set at a time).

But, the thing I'm confused with is this...

If each sub-folder contains an xml list of images, should I

a.)load all the xml files right away? Into an array, for example, which will hold all the data? If so, How can I load xml files in a loop? And is this the right approach if there are a lot of files to include? Or,

b.)Is it possible to load the xml from each button and have it override the previous xml?

The code below loads an xml when the first button is pressed, but after that it does nothing!

Trying to replace a timeline loop with a setInterval. For some reason, the function I am using to duplicate my movieclips is not working from setInterval but does work from a normal function call. Why would this be??? I know the functions is actually being called because I traced it. But the duplication of the ball does not.

I have created 2 Flash movies in the form of a slideshow. The flash clips are embedded in the webpage that I was modifying and it works perfectly fine. What I would like to do is to allow users to be able to click on the flash image in the web pages. Once clicked, a new pop-up window will appear and it will show the freeze image of the flash that was being clicked at the moment. Currently I am only able to make the new pop-up window and the flash still played through itself in it while I need it to freeze and be static.

I need some help understanding for loop and timers and what I want to do is set the timer so it counts. Every 3 seconds add 1 to the count and then call a function. If the count reaches 3 then reset every thing and start over. But it isn't working the way I want it too.

possible to have a timer that works inside a 'for' loop? I have created a timer but it only activates each time the frame is run through. I have a for loop with i++ so that I can put objects on the page with a small pause between them. The i++ loop puts all the movieclips on the page simultaneously. I need a delay and a loop because the shuffled arrays will be reset each time the frame refreshes.

I tried to move 4 movie clips in a loop and with a 3 seconds interval. So first I tried a loop and a timer function inside. I supposed by the loop the timer should start and finish for times. I have problem with moving bitmap array on second timer loop. I think this problem is related to the loop addchild was in, not sure how to solve it. The current code does create 14 images in a strip, the problem was I couldn't move them with another timer or just outside the completeListener function.

I have been using the new unloadAndStop() function to unload some loaded SWFs after they are no longer needed. This has been working fine whilst testing in flash, and when I have tested it using firefox. However, to my utter horror and despair unloadAndStop() seems to be crashing safari and IE8. I haven't tried IE7.

After replacing unloadAndStop() with the old unload() the crashing stopped. So I am certain this is the problem. unloadAndStop(false) also caused flash to crash. No error was displayed.

This project has been 7 months in the making and involved a lot of hard work in the evening and weekends. I noticed that it was starting to lag after being in use for a while because SWFs weren't being released from memory. When I say lag as well, It's not like normal frame rate slowing down lag, the whole application will simply freeze up for a couple seconds, and the freezing lasts longer the longer the app has been running. I have gone through and made sure to null almost every variable myself, and null any variable in the loading swf that points to anything in the loaded SWF. It appears to be working now using the old unload() function, but will need more testing to be sure because the lagging only turns up after the application has been running for about 45 minutes and has loaded and unloaded several SWFs.

Anyway, is there anything that I can do about this or am I missing something obvious? I haven't found any other posts about this, has anyone else had this problem? Why does god hate me so much?

Sort it out please Adobe, I really don't think it should be this hard to get rid of a loaded SWF. If you were in front of me right I would be screaming at you.

So I recently got a new laptop. It came installed with Windows 7 64-bit and Internet Explorer 8. However, after installing the current Flash Player update, IE started freezing. I would open certain pages, and the browser would become unresponsive, leading me to end the program. I would try it again, and still the same result. The culprits were always the same, hotmail and tvshowsondvd, among others. Internet Explorer 9 was released a few days later, so I uninstalled IE8 and installed IE9.

The browser worked fine for a few days, but then it started to do it all over again, with the same web pages! Then I noticed something, all these pages were heavy in flash objects. So I tried uninstalling Flash Player 10 and guess what, it started working! No more problems loading pages. I can no longer view flash objects, especially on YouTube. I haven't had the problem since, but I need Flash Player installed.

I'm trying to run the example application from the FlarManager download. It worked first time using the FlarToolkit engine, but the webcam freezes if I change to the FlareNFT tracker. The only change I've made is to the onAdded function:

From this:

When using the FlareNFTManager it compiles but freezes the camera feed. No errors are thrown, but the FlarManager event handlers are not triggered (e.g. onFlarManagerInited, onMarkerAdded, etc.).

Flash :: Preloader Hanging / Freezing With 'hiccups'

I've developed a flash-based site for a client who has an account with GoDaddy and have uploaded all files successfully to the hosting server. The site consists of an initial preloader named "preloader.swf", which loads an external SWF file named "main.swf" that contains different sections including an image-gallery section.However, I notice that at times (as not always this happens) the initial flash preloader for the main flash-based site loads faster than usual with "hiccups". This results in when having to view an image in the gallery section of the site (where each image is loaded externally from the server having a preloader of its own), the selected image loads in a jagged manner with "hiccups" (for instance from 22% it pauses then jumps immediately to 31%, then pauses again and jumps immediately to 47%, and so on).

Then, at a point in time, the preloader suddenly freezes/hangs the entire site, having no other choice but to refresh the site.Only then, once the preloader of the image has froze and the site is refreshed, or the cache is cleared, will the entire site work perfectly as supposed to - i.e. the initial preloader loads more slower and smoother, and the preloaders of when the images are loading are more smoother as well (no sudden jumps in the percentages as before; the preloader loads in normal increments).how I can make the site load smoothly always without having to encounter any hiccups, freezing and hanging, as I've been checking my code over and over again but I can't find anything wrong with it?I was doing some research and read that the cause might be because of the following line "ProgressEvent.PROGRESS" as it might not fire at times in IE or Firefox. Is that so? If so, what alternative must I take?[code]

I set up a loop where a movie clip moves in a triangle over and over. It works, but I want it to pause for 5 seconds at each location, so I added a Timer (my first attempt). Now, it will go through the triangle once, pausing correctly, but then the main movie clip (target_mc) stops in the original position and never moves again.
