Flex :: Compression Support In AS3 / AIR?
Sep 26, 2010Is there a way to open RAR / zip / 7z in AS3? Is it easy to use compression library in C with Alchemy?

View 3 RepliesI wish to develop a softare for 3D object compression (by polygon reduction) in flex using papervision 3D. Could you please suggest me an efficient algorithm for the same?
View 1 RepliesWe have Flex applications that connect to our ASP.NET 3.5 Web Applications and usually download lot of data. Now considering XML as transport, for every item, it transmits meta data twice for example.. instead of transferring int value as <Customer CustomerID=23/> it transmits <Customer><CustomerID>23</CustomerID></Customer> .. now here is where bandwidth conservation becomes an issue.
FLEX Can not read GZip and DEFLATE compressed HTTP Response ( So cant use any of them )I heard of some WSCompression but it requires WSE 3.0 now I am skeptical to introduce too many dependency in my hosting environment which requires too much management and overheads. Is WSE 3.0 only dll library which requires no installation on production server? Does it require rewriting all WebService attribute? Or is it simple one time configuration and more or less, anyone knows does it work with Flex ? Flex dynamically generates web services, and we use lot of its auto generated code, now if we want to support compression then do we need to rewrite lot of code?
Simplest solution I can think of is, reduce unnecessary XML tags and reduce them down to attributes to save bandwidth. Is there an easy way to achieve it, our classes has more then 50-70 properties, I understand it will be nightmare to add attributes to each property but we dont know how to do it in case of SOAP.

View 1 RepliesI need to compress video image data (lets say a display object) in AS3 to a Byte Array with high compression at runtime. Framerate only needs to be around 5 but 1024x768 video needs to go to < 40 Kilobyte per Second without the quality being too bad. I wrote a custom encoder and got it to around 80-100 Kilobyte per Second for 1024*768 which still is too much and I don't see a lot of improvements to be mad to my encoder.
Using JPG or PNG Encoder gives way higher KB/s. Is there any open source way to to decode and encode video in as3 at runtime ? E.g. a H.264 as3 encoder and decoder ? Or other codecs? Or maybe a C# source code of h.264 encoder and decoder ? I think I could port it to as3. Doesnt need to be h.264, just something with good quality when running at 5 Frames/Sec and 40 Kilobyte...
As mentioned in release notes to Flash Player 11, developers added LZMA compression support.
Question is how can one enable this support? Maybe there's an mxmlc option? Or more steps?
Simply setting -swf-version=13 and switching playerglobal.swc in sdk didn't work for me.
i don't understand flash plugin only support .swf file,not support .flv file? always require load a swf file for play flv file, for exampes:
<embed type="video/x-flv" src="http://www.my.com/test.flv"></embed>
must be use a swf for play
<embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.my.com/player.swf" flashvars=""></embed>
Does Flex 3 support threading? If so, are there any examples or links I could look at?
View 3 RepliesI have a Flex object which collects a DTO from the server. All the fields arrive filled in correctly except for the one that is a HashMap. It arrives as null.I've tried giving it a type of both ArrayCollection and Dictionary, but that hasn't fixed it.Does anyone know if there's an inherent incomaptability between Java HashMap and Flex?If not, what might I be doing wrong here? I'm looking at my jboss console and I see the data being populated correctly in the server side before delivery to the client.

I know that Silverlight 4 support put request using its client http stack.
I need to create an application that will use Flex on the client side and PHP on the server side. In my application I will need to have transactions opened for a long time (maybe 1, 2, 3 minutes). Can you give me any toughts on what PHP-FLEX fraework to use? I even found something like AS3FlexDB but it seem to not supporting transactions for a long time.
View 1 RepliesI was about to start with a chat application like this one. I was wondering how to do it on Eclipse. Does Eclipse support Flex development? Is there a plugin or a tool which I need to download for Eclipse? I installed Flash Develop on my machine, but I am getting some issue in unzipping the zip file for Flex SDK which I can't figure out why. Thus I was thinking of switching to Eclipse.
View 2 RepliesSome places in my flex app, I use ResourceManager.getInstance().getString, and other places I use mxml @Resource tag to retrieve resource properties dynamically loaded from ResourceManager. resourceManager.loadResourceModule(resourceModuleURL); But only strings from ResourceManager.getInstance().getString show proper locale based values, while the @Resource tag only returns values from en_US resource. I guess it is because en_US is what I compiled with (-locale=en_US ). So I am wondering if I am using a dynamicly-loaded resource, do I have to abandon the @Resource tag and use ResourceManager.getInstance().getString ?

View 1 RepliesI have a DataGrid of objects, and I want to modally edit them; pop up a dialog, change the item, and if the user clicks "Ok", save the changes back to the original item, and if they click "Cancel", do nothing. It seems obvious that if I simply pass in a reference to the original object and change it using data bindings to the fields in the edit form, I won't be able to cancel my edits. How can I support that capability?
View 1 RepliesI'm planning on building a Flex based multiplayer game, and I'm researching what will be required for the server end. I have PHP experience, so I started looking at ZendAMF.
Now in this game, I'll need the concept of rooms, and real time updates to clients in those rooms, so it looks like I'll be using remote shared objects (correct, yes?). I'm not seeing where ZendAMF can support this.It seems to indicate that ZendAMF isn't going to do what I want. WebORB for PHP seems to be the only PHP based solution that does messaging, but on that page it doesn't mention "real-time" next to it like the Java based ones below it do.
Why doesn't the Flex framework's mxml language support a constructor for components or accept constructor arguments for components? It's as far as I know not possible to declare an ActionScript object in mxml if it takes constructor arguments. I'm curious about the reason. Is it a design choice by Adobe or related to how declarative languages work? For example, why not allow:
<myNameSpace:MyComponent constructor="{argArray}"/>
I've been trying to find the right configuration for supporting both http/s requests in a Flex app. I've read all the docs and they allude to doing something like the following:
<default-channels>
<channel ref="my-secure-amf">
<serialization>[code]..........
I'm running with Tomcat 5.5.17 and Java 5.The BlazeDS docs say this is the best practice. Is there a better way? With this config, there seems to be 2-3 retries associated with each channel defined in the default-channels element so it always takes ~20s before the my-amf channel connects via a http request. Is there a way to override the 2-3 retries to say, 1 retry for each channel?
I am using text layout framework in my application. I am using textflow as editor to my application. As text layout framework supports multiple languages. I a m able to see the text in multiple languages. Now my doubt is, can I type in different languages? For example: As in word if we choose the font as Hindi then whatever we type it comes in Hindi.
View 1 RepliesThe sorting capabilities that are available in Flex assume that you have access to all the data, but I'm using a paginated datagrid (with custom code), the datagrid is binded to an ArrayCollection instance, on the next page call I change the data of the dataprovider and everything works ok, but for sorting I need to override the click or event better override the sort method of the arraycollection
All this is to be able to do a server-side sorting.
does the latest sdk now support RESTful methods like PUT and DELETE using their HTTPService?
I am working on flex dasboards and charting stuff. Till now I have build them for static data only now I want to upgrade them to work for real time data where new data is continuosly sent to client (swf file) from server and it updates the same.I am using Jruby with RoR.
View 5 RepliesGot a large file 12 minutes long clip and I compressed it with the adobe optimization program adobe media encoder. I got a 350 megbite file to be 60 megabites as a 320X240. I choose also a medium size video file. How do I keep the video quality and stream it (like hulu would do) or how do I compress it smaller than 60 megabites and keep the same quality. Either or. I am not familiar with web video so I am trying to make the file as small as I can in size with the most amount of quality.
View 3 Repliesis there any flash compression? i 'm creating a full flash and i use video file for my BG and some animtion. but that file's size takes more than 1.4MB. how can i compress that file.
View 1 Repliesonce a video file has been encoded into an flv is there a way to confirm the compression settings? Say if I wanted to double check that I had the right setting or duplicate setting of a flv I encoded earlier, is there a way to access this info?Like QT you can choose Movie Inspector.In QT I opened a flv file that was encoded with a Max data rate: 50kbps (I know, I know very low but it's the setting I was given). I then selected Movie Inspector thinking it could do the trick but it listed the data rate as 359.68 kbits/s.is if I encoded at a Max data rate: 50kbps how is 359.68 listed as it's data rate in QT?
View 3 RepliesAny troubles when compressing red colours to .swf? I always have a kind of blur in edges, like dirty compression.
View 1 RepliesWe've got a Flex/Java application using BlazeDS and we're investigating reducing the size of the payloads being passed between our server and the client.Since AMF is a binary format and supposed to be fairly compact, is there any benefit to turning on GZip compression? Has anyone else done this before and did you see any significant gains from using compression?I just performed a simple test to determine what kind of compression ratios we might expect if we were to enable gzipping. I just captured the AMF payloads in some files and just gzipped them using the Linux command line version. I didn't specify the level of compression, just the default i.e. 'normal'. It appears that on average there is a 9% reduction in the payload size, with some payloads getting as much as 61%. Can anyone see a flaw in this method and what level of compression can be used in HTTP gzipping?
