Flex :: Create A "Please Wait" Spinner While Data Is Being Imported?

I am creating an Flex AIR app which imports data from a zip file into a sqlite db. I need to show a progress bar / "Please Wait" spinner animation so that the user waits till the operation completes.
I have tried to put a pop-up spinner animation but the problem is that the spinner stops spinning as soon as the database import queries start executing.
I need to run both the spinner code and the import code simultaneously rather than sequentially.

My Flex application does a remote call to weborb to save some data from Flex. When this data is saved, a service is called on another server. All this time Flex is waiting for an answer. Is it possible to call this service (on the other server) and not wait for an answer. I have tried to call the service asynchronous but all this does is calling the service in a different thread. Flex still has to wait for both threads to be finished... So when the data is saved, flex should get its answer. (while the thread handling the service is still running).

I think I must be missing a step here; I have different data being pulled from an array created from xml depending on a variable (_currentTrackNum).. and the data changes if I set a different initial value for it; but if I change the variable once the program is initialized, none of the data changes even though I rerun the call with the changed variable.[code]

I have a AS spinner class that I downloaded from Jake Hawkes (click here to see it running).I want to replace the flex application preloader with this spinner. I have previously used custom preloaders, but that was just for editing what already existed. Anyone know how that spinner.as could be used instead of the loading bar?

I am learning Adobe Air and want to get the current selected item in the spinner list I have created, however every time I use selectedItem I keep getting the same value over and over, no matter what option I select. I am trying to make an application for the Playbook and this this my SpinnerList code:

I have two classes: Level, which dictates a tile-based level, and MapLoader, which loads a text file on my local machine.I am calling a load function through Level asking MapLoader to load, but when I try to parse the data, MapLoader isn't done with the load.I've tried putting the load in a while loop, but it just freezes. In this app/website I'm building, I will be making many requests for data (via an external PHP file that queries a MySQL database). I'd like to build this request mechanism into its own class so I can reuse it.What's the best way to handle this? I'm thinking the following would work, but I'm a bit lost on the last step:1) From the main class, call a method in the query class (with whatever arguments apply, to specify what data I need etc).
2) Set up a listener in the main class and make the program enter a sort of "wait" state (possibly visually, if these requests wind up taking more than a half-second or so)3) From query class (upon receiving the data), dispatch event to let main class know it's received the data.4) Send data to main class. <---- How should this be achieved?For #4, should I create a custom event that dispatches with the data inside the event object for the main class to receive when it's notified? Will this be a problem if I have lots of different types of requests (will I need a new custom event for each type?)? Or is there some other sort of "return" I can/should use (similar to calling a function that returns a value)

The problem is that it executes #Second before #First, which means that the object is not fullly loaded but the code continues nonetheless. Is there a way handle this? I have tried using a while loop, but this is ugly and makes flash crash. Is there any decent way to handle this, does it have to do with better code structure/program flow or is there a technical way to make it wait? Also note: This code is executed on the server side, which means there are no frames involved.
UPDATE:When projects get bigger, this gets very ugly, especially when you are retrieving mulitple things from a server, you have to use very deep nesting, you have to keep repeating the same code, example for buying a serial:

I am still working to fix a FIRED developers code he left us with. The code in question goes out and request information from a database, places it into arrays and also checks session. THis is what I think it should be doing. I am getting a bunch of undefined returns ( prints out in the assigned text fields). Is there a way to make Flash WAIT until all the data has been retrieved from the database. This is out first theory.

My group is working on a Flex/AS3 scientific web application that is data intensive. Luckily the only plots involved are line charts. However, each line chart may have multiple traces (up to 24), and each trace may contain up to 2000 points. The user will need to zoom in and out and interact with the data (e.g. data tips, etc.).
The response I'm getting from developers is that's a lot of data to render in a plot in Flash. For reasons beyond the scope of this post, we can't sample the data to reduce the size (this has already been done and nature of the data prevents further sampling).
Rendering speed is critical for this app. What kind of rendering speed should I expect the Flex 4 line chart component to provide for a given number of points (e.g. 1 second to render 1000 points?)
Are there products available that handle plotting large data sets better, which can be incorporated in Flex (I've seen FusionCharts and ZingCharts online but have no idea how they compare with Flex's components)? Of those, which are easy to develop with while still providing a lot of flexibility in look and feel?

I was hoping for some guidelines on the general best practice for storing data from an XML document. When all is said and done, my whole flash site will be powered by XML, so I want to make sure it is organized properly. Usually what I do is parse the XML, and store all the different sets of data in arrays, but I'm sure there's a better way to do it. I'm no expert though, so I need something fairly straightforward. Here's my initial setup:

I am working on a flash file that imports XML values into flash. I used tutorials from this forum and all worked nice. Now i would like to do one more thing but cant find solution or answer to it. Hope that you guys can help me out with it.What i want to achieve is:
I am importing 8 numbers from XML file first 4 called HOT number next 4 called COLD number and i show it in dynamic text boxes in flash file. XML changes and values in the file changes as well.I want to check if imported number is : 1 or 2 or 3 or 7 or 8 or 9 then color of imported number should be red , if number is for example 4,5,10,12,15 then color is black other numbers color green. Numbers are from 0-36 .

I'm struggling shaking my old school AS2 mindset here. I've got a main swf which loads a bunch of subordinate swfs. I need my loaded swfs to see some variables in the main. For instance (example simplified for conversational purposes), let's say I've got a swf loading (we'll say littleSwf), which needs to set its rotation based on a variable (we'll say swfRotation) in the main. The rotation code is inside of the little swf. How does that little swf get told / find out what its rotation number is?

I have data being loaded from a php into an xml class.
My host (which is free for testing purposes) keeps adding data to the php file which causes errors. I need to know how I can delete this extra text before I put the data into an XML class so I do not get the error. I did a trace of the data and this is what comes up below. I need everything below the </data> tag to be removed but do not know how to do this.

know if it is possible to randomize data that is imported from a .CSV file so that it displays as dynamic text in Flash?Or if there might be a thread I could be pointed to? I cant believe that Flash will let you load data from a text file then doesn't allow you to do anything with the data other than display it. Surely there must be a way you can do something the data imported ie perform some calculations. Is this beyond Flash or is this something that has been addressed in AS3? All the tutorials I've found all stop at just displaying and 'swonking'.

I retrieve XML data in Flex via HttpService. I have the resultFormat property on the HttpService instance set to HTTPService.RESULT_FORMAT_OBJECT. The result contains data similar to this:

I get an array named item beneath the element children when there is more than one item sibling. If there's only one, the conversion can't distinguish it from a scalar.
What do I need to change to have Flex convert all item elements to an array with 0 or more elements?
What would I have to do to get an array member children, dropping the item wrappers altogether?
The XML is generated by Struts on the server side. I always have the option to change the structure of the document there, but right now I'm interested in what I can do with Flex.

I need to create an object in code which can then be imported to the stage. Specifically it's a circle with an ellipse cut out of it. The size and position of the ellipse masked out need to be parameterized by sliders, and the size of the circle as a whole is also a parameter which might be dragged out on the stage.
Does anyone have an example of how to programatically create an object in action script which can be imported to the library which can take parameters (or rather expose some methods) which can be wired to other things in the project like a knob or slider?
