Flex :: Registering Event Listeners In A Controller?

Nov 10, 2009

I'm working on creating a simple MCV application, in order to understand MVC better. The problem I'm having is registering event listeners. The way I see MVC is that the view dispatches events, the controller listens for these events and acts on them, either updating the model or amending the view. So in my MVC app I have a controller which during initialisation should register all the events that are dispatched by the view. This is my controller:

[Code]...

Now is this the way to do this, and why is it that my controller is not registering the event handlers?

How do you bind an event listener from the controller to the view's elements eg button (click event) to its own handler? Originally I was doing this from the view eg. button.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, controller.buttonClick); But now realise this is wrong since reading "each view is only supposed to "know" about the model which it represents, and "know" nothing of the controller"

Flex :: Programmatically Firing Event Listeners

Nov 10, 2011

I would like to programatically fire an event on a spark checkbox. I have a tab bar which has tabs enabled according to various checkboxes. I am loading data into these tabs. Sometimes tabs 1 and 2 will be enabled. Other times tabs 2 and 3. Other times tab 4 by itself (and all the other combinations). I have tried to enable the VBox (in action script) which is in my view stack but it seems to freeze the application. The VBox enables correctly upon user input on the check box. If I set the checkbox to be selected it does not fire the event and so does not enable the tab.

Is it possible to manually fire an event in Flex. I have tried to see if I can take the checkbox and get the event and fire it. Unfortunately I can only see addEventListener, hasEventLister and removeEventListener. There is no way of getting the events that are already on the checkbox

Actionscript 3 :: Flex Adding Event Listeners With Callback Functions Which Have No Arguments

Jun 10, 2009

fileReference.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, uploadCompleteHandler);
private function uploadCompleteHandler(event:Event):void {}

Above is one way to add an event listener in Actionscript. By default the callback function needs to have an argument with name event and type Event. Is there a way to declare this function without any arguments :

private function uploadCompleteHandler():void {}

Edit : It's possible to add an event handler without any arguments in mxml. So one student wanted to know, why isn't it possible to do the same in actionscript?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Registering An Event Listener To A Tween In An External Class?

Feb 6, 2009

I am using an external 'Animation' class to handle all animations in a project. I would like to register event listeners to listen for tween completion - how do I go about this?

function in Animation class:

Code:

public function SlideOut(target, tx){
var slideTween: TweenMax = new TweenMax(target,.5,{x: tx,y:0,ease:Back.easeIn});
}

[Code].....

Obviously, mySlide.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, transitionComplete) doesn't work. I've tried including the name of the instance of tween too but no dice. I could write my own event within the animation class and dispatch it via another function but there must be a more elegant solution?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Key Event One "A" Key Only Registering Once?

Mar 20, 2011

So I'm playing around in Flash and using Actionscript 3.0 but I have a weird issue with keyboard events that has me stumped. What I'm doing is make a game that uses the WASD keys for movement, but for some reason the "A" key is only registering a key press once, and once only. After that it stops responding. All the other keys work as expected.

Here's the relevant code:

Code:
public function update_screen(event:Event) {
var keyPressed:Boolean = false;
if (key_array[Keyboard.D] == true) {

[Code].....

As you can see, I'm using a key array to register which keys are pressed. The last two functions are used by event listeners attached to the stage. Trace statements in these functions show they are being called the first time the A key is pressed and released, but then not after that. They are, however called, for all the other keys every time they are pressed and released. If I change key_array[Keyboard.A] to key_array[Keyboard.LEFT], it works.

Flex :: .NET Webservice In MVC - Access (controller)?

Jun 22, 2010

I am working on a flex application which makes calls to an .NET webservice. I am trying to follow the MVC design pattern. I have created a model, which stores all information received from the webservice. The webservice itself is created by actionscript in the controller. The view in my case, consists of various user-defined components (multiple .mxml files).

The Model is a singleton class, and each of the views accesses a getInstance of the model. The question is how do i access the webservice (i.e. controller) from each of these components? Does the controller also need to be a singleton class just like the model? and let each component get an instance of the controller in order to access the webservice?

Content type is application/x-www-form-urlencoded and I have set authentication to "None" in web.config with no improvement.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Add Event Listeners Between Classes?

Mar 11, 2009

So I've gotten into using my own as Classes, and have an interesting question.
My main swf calls a php script that gets data from a mysql database which is returned as XML. Part of that data that is retrieved is a filepath to a jpg image. It then takes that filepath and other information, and passes it to my external class, the "news story" class.

All fine and good. Then, the "news story" class uses a loader to load that image along with some text, organize it, and voila, you've got your own very pretty "news story". (I'm extending the MovieClip class here, though I suppose it doesnt matter)

Now, my main swf uses this component to load multiple of these "news stories". The problem is, theres that load time for the image. The main swf is loading them all one at a time, because they are putting each one together on their own.

The key here is that it be dynamic. So, since we don't know how much text is in each "news story", we also therefore don't know it's height. What I'm doing is creating each story in the main swf, pushing it into a "news story" array, adding an event listener to each ones' loader, and when the event listener is triggered, I want it to go to the 'add content' function where it sets the news story's Y value based off the position and height of the previous story that was added (stacking them, obviously). This makes sense, because otherwise it'd add them all on top of each other and it'd be a jumbled mess.

The problem is, the event listener is on the loader object INSIDE the component actionscript. So, how do I figure out which news story to set the Y value for? Because the eventlistener is listening to the loader, not the class. I hope this makes sense AT ALL. Here is the code:

Quote:

while (fancy shmantzy conditions)
{
/*creates the news story and passes xml data to it (filepath, etc)*/
storyBlock = new StoryBlock(a bunch of parameters);
subCBArray.push(storyBlock); //array that stores each news story info

ActionScript 3.0 :: References And Event Listeners?

May 17, 2010

Lately I've been twitching in the back of my head wondering just how many references to objects that I'm making, and whether or not they are getting GC'd or not.My question in this sense refers to event listeners and whether or not they are removed in certain cases where you get rid of an object. Two examples:

First, and I think this one is an easy one... when you create an object that adds an event listener to itself INSIDE it's own methods (e.g. this.addEventListener(e:Event, function)), when you REMOVE that object (this), do it's event listeners disappear too? I can only say yes, because they are referencing THAT object and are INSIDE that object.

So I think that question answers itself (but I'd love to know if the truth says otherwise).

But secondly, if you add an event listener to an object from a sibling or parent object, and then remove the object, does that event listener stick around, therefore maintaining a reference to that object and keeping it in memory? And is that the concept that people keep referring to of 'weak' event listeners? E.g. someChildObject.addEventListener(e:Event, function)Also, are event listeners by default strong or weak?

And I am assuming that 'yes', it DOES keep the reference. Which, if you are a n00b programmer like me, you probably are all like, 'aww sh*t damn, how am I supposed to make sure that my objects are getting thrown in the garbage collector's mouth of goodness every once in a while?

The (B) Movieclip in turn has several movieclips whose have tween class effect being executed on thier child movieclips.the tweens are all unique to each movieclip and the event listeners are taken off once completed.This works all well and good in FLASH IDE..My problem arises when I try to view this in a browser on a Windows XP.[code]

What is happening in most cases it that the animation appears to "stick" but i think what may be happening is the listening or removal of the event listeners. The animations are left incompleted.Is there any rule of thumb when using multiple event listeners?[code]the effect disables and re-enables the buttons when its done.... then the listeners are removed.each one with the exception cretes its own unique tween (obviously this is a custom class built as each clip)
