Flex :: Fall Listeners Have Executed On Next Line After Dispatching An Event?
Dec 16, 2009
I know the flash engine is single threaded so when it receives an event, does it essentially break off, execute any registered event listeners (in no guaranteed order) then return to the current scope?[code]can I guarantee that the current function will complete before any of the event listeners execute? ie trace("Done"); will ALWAYS execute first.

Is it common knowledge that distributing an event to 1000000 listeners is twice as slow as manually calling these listener functions for each such listener in 1000000 loop? This is what my conclusion is, I just cooked up some code benchmarking this. How is the native API useful then (aside from in retrospect when it probably will get more effective), if anyone can replicate it using non-native code, that will be a couple of kilobytes worth of extra code, and one can potentially achieve much greater speeds.

I have no experience with Object Oriented Programming, so I wonder about the following:
1) Will the code past the .LOAD line (in red) be executed only after the image completes loading?
2) Can I nest several listeners as seeing in my code below?

I am trying to dispatch an event but not sure when I should do it to get the right results. The first event "submitClicked" is in the right spot and works great. However, the second event "dataReady" seems like it might be a problem. I need it to be dispatched after this.compiledFormData is set.Does AS3 wait for each line of code in a function to be executed before moving on to the next line?

Let's say function foo() is executing. Suppose that an external event occurs, for which you have a handler. Will function foo() be interrupted so that the event handler can be executed? What is the order of execution in this situation?

I got a question about event dispatching in flex.my goal is to get a custom event loaded up with some data and than bubble up to the eventlistener. my main application has and AMF service request inside which calls an service class. that class is supposed to dispatch an event when the AMF service request returns a result or fault and the main application is listening for that event.so inside my mainapp i add and listener like this:[code]
However, this event never reaches the main application. Looking closely to it with the debugger, i found out that when the event is dispatched the listeners property of it is set to null.

import flash.events.Event;
public class CopyProductEvent extends Event {
public static const COPY_PRODUCT:String = "COPY_PRODUCT";
public var picked:Prodotti;

The event from the function is dispatched correctly... I can't intercept it..

I'm using a component in a cairngorm PopupWrapper. I want to listen to the KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWn event on the component but it doesn't seem to be dispatching it. Is it because it's in PopupWrapper? Is there anyway I can get it to dispatch the event?[code]

I have a object that is extended from arraycollection. This object has to access and manipulate the arraycollections source object. When this happens, the local sorted/filter copy of data goes out of sync with the source data. To line things up correctly, the sort/filter needs to be re-applied.
To do this normally, you would call refresh() on the arraycollection, but this also broadcasts a refresh event. What I want is to update the sort/filter without dispatching an event.Having looked into the ArrayCollection class, I can see it is extended from ListCollectionView. The refresh function
public function refresh():Boolean
{
return internalRefresh(true);
}
is in ListCollectionView and it calls this function
private function internalRefresh(dispatch:Boolean):Boolean
{
if (sort || filterFunction != null)
{
[code]....
annoyingly, that function is private and so is unavailable to and class that extends ListCollectionView. Also, a lot of what is in the internalRefresh function is private too.Does anyone know of a way to call internalRefresh from a class that extends ArrayCollection? Or a way of stopping the refresh event from being dispatched when refresh is called?

I have many buttons in Main.mxml. I'm trying to move the button functionality into a Class and have Event Listeners inside the class respond to Click and call other functions. I have written:
Main.mxml
<mx:Button x="23.5" y="10" label="checker" click="{goListen()}" />
<mx:Button id="btnT1" x="252.5" y="10" label="t1" />

I'm working on creating a simple MCV application, in order to understand MVC better. The problem I'm having is registering event listeners. The way I see MVC is that the view dispatches events, the controller listens for these events and acts on them, either updating the model or amending the view. So in my MVC app I have a controller which during initialisation should register all the events that are dispatched by the view. This is my controller:
[Code]...
Now is this the way to do this, and why is it that my controller is not registering the event handlers?

I have an application in flex, it has some components out of the box and quite a few of custom components and events. I want to get all event listeners on a specific component in runtime, I know how to do it with monkey-patching the framework but I do not want to use a monkey patch nor can I rely on this in production.

I would like to programatically fire an event on a spark checkbox. I have a tab bar which has tabs enabled according to various checkboxes. I am loading data into these tabs. Sometimes tabs 1 and 2 will be enabled. Other times tabs 2 and 3. Other times tab 4 by itself (and all the other combinations). I have tried to enable the VBox (in action script) which is in my view stack but it seems to freeze the application. The VBox enables correctly upon user input on the check box. If I set the checkbox to be selected it does not fire the event and so does not enable the tab.
Is it possible to manually fire an event in Flex. I have tried to see if I can take the checkbox and get the event and fire it. Unfortunately I can only see addEventListener, hasEventLister and removeEventListener. There is no way of getting the events that are already on the checkbox

So I have a bit of an odd error.
[Code]...
The line that says xmlData = XML(evt.target.data) freezes my program. Nothing gets past that line. I have no idea what's causing this problem... What I mean by nothing gets past it is that anything anfter that line doesn't get executed. I put the userArea.addChild(userList) before all over the function to determine where the problem was and it's only after that line that my userList was no long showing up.

I have a flex tree that worked perfectly fine when we set the defaultLeafIcon={null} and the folderClosedIcon and folderOpenIcon to {null}. We decided to put the icons back in and took out the nulls. Now they show up fine, but if you click on the icon instead of the label or the rest of the row, it seems to change the selected item, shows the highlight around the new item, but doesn't dispatch the ItemClick event. This makes it really hard to know that the tree's selected item has changed!
The weird part is that once you have clicked on the icon once and it looked like the selectedItem changed (or at least it applied that style), if you click the same icon again, it will actually fire the itemClick event. if you click any other icon, it does the same thing again, switching the selectedItem and styling that row, but not firing the itemClick event.

fileReference.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, uploadCompleteHandler);
private function uploadCompleteHandler(event:Event):void {}
Above is one way to add an event listener in Actionscript. By default the callback function needs to have an argument with name event and type Event. Is there a way to declare this function without any arguments :
private function uploadCompleteHandler():void {}
Edit : It's possible to add an event handler without any arguments in mxml. So one student wanted to know, why isn't it possible to do the same in actionscript?

I have a custom Flex 4.5 component (to be used in a List) -
Game.mxml (represents a clickable playing table in a card game):
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

But I never see the "game clicked: " trace. Does anybody please know why? I'm probably missing something minor, because I can see the "Clicked: 8946" trace.

When, in ActionScript, an event is dispatched:
foo.addEventListener("some event", someHandler);
foo.dispatchEvent(new Event("some event"));
At what point are the event handlers executed?
I ask because I caught this at the end of an Adobe developer guide:
Notice that some properties are assigned to the [AsyncToken] after the call to the remote service is made. In a multi-threaded language, there would be a race condition where the result comes back before the token is assigned. This situation is not a problem in ActionScript because the remote call cannot be initiated until the currently executing code finishes.
But I could not find any information on what they meant by "currently executing code".

I've got a very simple movie clip that is supposed to load an external .swf into an empty clip that gets created when you click on one of the clip instances on the stage.
[Code]....
The empty movie clip gets created (I assume), and the .swf gets loaded in, but when you click anywhere on the stage, this code gets executed, basically loading the .swf back in. It's only supposed to execute when you click on "about_mc" . What am I missing, besides a brain?

No matter where the EnterFrame event is registered, the frame would not be rendered after the EnterFrame event handler done in each frame.For example, I have two unrelated MovieClips:
Code:
oneMC.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, tick);
function tick(event:Event):void {
if (otherMC.currentFrame == 20) {
otherMC.gotoAndPlay(5);
}
}
The frame #20 of "otherMC" will never be rendered on the stage, right?

I have two document classes. The main document class creates a empty movieClip and adds it to the stage in which the second document classes published swf is loaded into. The second document class has a button component on the stage in which once clicked just traces 'hello' to the output window.
What I want to do is upon clicking this button a Event is dispatched from the second document class, to the main document class. Now, I've Googled everything in this known world and have tried to implement examples to no avail. I'm really at a loss right now yet I stubbornly intend to keep banging my head against the problem. Below I have pasted both document classes minus the examples I've tried to implement thus far.
