Performance :: Linked List Faster Than Vector ?

Sep 10, 2011

I tried the benchmark on this site: Array vs. Vector vs. Linked list. It tests the performance of iterating over said sequences.Remarkably, iterating over a linked list is approximately 2.5x faster than a Vector.<int>. What is the reason for this counter-intuitive result?

Actionscript 3 :: Find A Complex Type In A List (Vector, Array, Dictionary, Whatever Is Faster)?

Aug 29, 2009

I need to know the best method to find an item inside a list (Vector, Array, Dictionary, whatever is faster) of complex type (extensions of Objects and Sprites).I've used "Needle in Haystack" method, but it seems that it isn't fast enough.

E.g.Suppose that I have a collection of Sprites (a pool, in fact).Each sprite will be added to the stage and perform some action. After that, it will die.I don't want to pay the cost to dispose it (garbage collect) and create another (new) one every time so I'll keep the dead sprites in a collection.

Sometimes times I'll call a method that will add a sprite to the stage.This sprite can be a old one, if it is already dead, or a new one, if the pool don't have any free sprite.

One of the scenarios that pushed me to this question was a Particle System.A "head" particle leaving a "trail" of particles every frame and exploding into a flashy multitude of particles... Every frame...Some times this counts up to 50.000 PNGs with motion, rotation, alpha, event dispatching, scale, etc...But, this is JUST ONE scenario...At the moment I'm trying to use a Object Pool with a Linked List...Hopes that it will be faster that running a whole Array/Vector or create new instances every frame an let them dye with Garbage Collection.

Professional :: Performance Optimization Vector Vs Raster?

Jan 28, 2011

I am trying to improve the frame rate of a game that draws many floor tiles. Currently, the floor tiles are vector graphics and stored as different frames in a movie clip. I wanted to experiment with rasterizing a floor tile and seeing if that would provide any frame rate boosts. I did this by converting one of my tiles (one of the frames in my movie clip) to a png and replacing the vector version of this tile with this raster version. I then tested two worlds--one filled with tile A (vector) and another filled with tile B (png).

In all my tests, world with tile A (the original vector version) outperformed the world with tile B. I am guessing that the reason I am not getting the expected performance gains is because I am still rendering the tiles in the old style and not using any strict bitmap drawing calls?why it is that this method fails to boost rendering speed? Would I have to switch my rendering code to strict bitmap draw calls?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Significant Performance Hit For Scaling A Vector Animation?

Feb 22, 2010

So, the actual act of scaling a vector object has a bit of a cost to the CPU, and so animating an object from one size to another has a significant cost -- but is there any additional cost for simply playing an animation that has previously been programatically scaled?

My initial thought was that if I took a character -- it's a little dude with a walk cycle, done in vector, and skooshed him to like 0.66 scaleX and scaleY then there would be some performance hit for even just playing his walk cycle in skooshed mode vs. playing it at normal size, but I can't manage to confirm my suspicion.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Linked List Sorting Best Algorithm?

Dec 26, 2009

I know there isn't a built-in linked list in AS3, but one can easily write his own. However, I found it difficult to come up with a good solution for sorting such list.If you didn't know, linked list is a chain of "cell" objects, where each object has a reference to the next object, typically you can write it like this:

Cell1.next = Cell2;
Cell2.next = Cell3;
CellN.next = null;

(Circular linked list and bidi linked lists are out of the scope of my problem, for now at least).

I looked into other languages that do have linked lists or even standard libraries for them, however, I don't seem to be able to either port any of their solutions, or, some of them, if ported to AS3 would not be workable (since they use recursion) or would otherwise have huge overhead because of lots of method calls etc.

I think, I'm focused on 2 possible algorithms: Merge sort and Insertion sort. These two seem to be most applicable to AS3. However, I may be wrong - so, please fill free to correct me.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Implementing A Linked List To Use Instead Of Arrays In Some Areas?

Sep 13, 2010

I was looking at implementing a linked list to use instead of arrays in some areas. But is it really worth it in AS3? I did some speed tests using 10000 objects (ints). Access is about the same as long as you know what node you're on. Removal is of course faster.But adding to the linked list is actually slower than push() by the same amount that it is faster in removal.So is it really worth it to use them?

Performance :: Optimization - Improving Performance With Large #'s Of Objects

Jan 11, 2011

I'm devloping some library classes for flocking/steering behaviours on large numbers of objects (2000+). I'm finding that at < 500 instances, performance is reasonable. As the numbers increase, framerate bogs down.

I've seen remarkable performance with libraries such as Flint or Box2D with ridiculous #'s of particles / objects, so it should be possible to optimize / refactor my code to be a bit better.

I'm aware of the basic optimizations, such as bitwise operations and optimized for loops. Are there any more fundamental approaches I should be considering? For example, currently each instance is a vector-based MovieClip. Would working with BitmapData be more efficient?

Performance :: Improve Flex Performance For Invisible Views?

Mar 19, 2012

We have a medium size Flex 3.6 application that contains around 20 different page views (managed via a single lazy ViewStack) each having multiple components. Most use custom renderers.All model data is loaded at startup and changes to model instances are communicated via binding and/or collection change events.Once the user has viewed each page at least once, all page views are instantiated and happily listen to update events.Which in effect means that each time a model instance changes, all interested views receive that event and compute derived data or trigger item-renderers.I have tested and confirmed this behaviour in a proof-of-concept application. Even when setting a list to being invisible, it still listens to collection change events and invalidates any renderer affected.What would you do?

Actionscript 3 :: Vector Number Does Not Extend Vector

Nov 16, 2011

I am currently being confused by the Vector class.I wrote a beautiful XML to TypedClass parser. Works beautifully and without fault. UNTIL a co-worker noticed we got a Conversion Error for Vector.<Number> to Vector.<*>.

Every Vector I've ever tested all extend Vector.<*>.

Vector.<Sprite>, Vector.<String>, Vector.<Point>, Vector.<Boolean>, Vector.<TextField>, Vector.<CustomObject>, etc etc etc. ALL of them.
<type name="__AS3__.vec::Vector.<String>" base="__AS3__.vec::Vector.<*>" isDynamic="true" isFinal="false" isStatic="false">
<extendsClass type="__AS3__.vec::Vector.<*>"/>

[code]...

But then when I use describeType on Vector.<Number>, Vector.<uint> and Vector.<int>.

<type name="__AS3__.vec::Vector.<Number>" base="Object" isDynamic="true" isFinal="true" isStatic="false">
<extendsClass type="Object"/>
<constructor>

[code]....

Now I have accounted for these 3 vectors individually as even uint and int does not extend Vector.<Number> as I would have expected.
And my parsing function works for all types correctly again. But my confusion comes as to WHY this is the case, and why I couldn't find any documentation on the subject.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Divinding Vector Graphics Into Vector Graphics

Jul 28, 2009

I have a large vector drawing (imagine 5000x5000) that i want to break up into separate pieces. I know that I can convert this vector drawing into a bitmap and then use the copyPixels method to create many separate bitmaps of the different regions of the original vector drawing, but is there any way to subdivide it into movieclips that just contain vector graphics instead of a bitmap?The reason im dividing a big chunk of vector graphics into smaller pieces is for performance reasons, so flash would only render a small part of this big chunk at a time (only certain regions/voxels/subdivisions are rendered at a time). But bitmaps apparently take up a lot of memory and the system im using would take much less memory if these subdivisions could be preserved in their original vector graphics form.

I imagine I could use masks somehow to achieve this effect (for each subdivision, duplicate the huge image and mask only the region that the subdivision represents), but I dont know the performance costs of masking or if this will create other problems.So is there anyway to split up a movieclip of vector graphics into smaller movieclips of vector graphics the same way copyPixels can with bitmaps?
