Professional :: Performance Optimization Vector Vs Raster?

I am trying to improve the frame rate of a game that draws many floor tiles. Currently, the floor tiles are vector graphics and stored as different frames in a movie clip. I wanted to experiment with rasterizing a floor tile and seeing if that would provide any frame rate boosts. I did this by converting one of my tiles (one of the frames in my movie clip) to a png and replacing the vector version of this tile with this raster version. I then tested two worlds--one filled with tile A (vector) and another filled with tile B (png).
In all my tests, world with tile A (the original vector version) outperformed the world with tile B. I am guessing that the reason I am not getting the expected performance gains is because I am still rendering the tiles in the old style and not using any strict bitmap drawing calls?why it is that this method fails to boost rendering speed? Would I have to switch my rendering code to strict bitmap draw calls?

I'm devloping some library classes for flocking/steering behaviours on large numbers of objects (2000+). I'm finding that at < 500 instances, performance is reasonable. As the numbers increase, framerate bogs down.
I've seen remarkable performance with libraries such as Flint or Box2D with ridiculous #'s of particles / objects, so it should be possible to optimize / refactor my code to be a bit better.
I'm aware of the basic optimizations, such as bitwise operations and optimized for loops. Are there any more fundamental approaches I should be considering? For example, currently each instance is a vector-based MovieClip. Would working with BitmapData be more efficient?

I have a game with a big raster map.Now we are using jpeg (4900x4200)And durring the game we need to scroll through this map.[code]In windows, we have very good performance.In Linux and Mac in flashplayer we have a good performance too.But in browsers performance is quite slow!

I'm working with a bit of code I ran across to see if I can convert it for a magnifying glass effect on swf's. It's written to work with raster images but in my case I've created swf's from the pngs I have to reduce their weight.The code I'm working with is filling the rectangle (magnifying glass) with the beginBitmapFill method. I'm kinda lost (being pretty new to Flash/AS3 programming) as to how to accomplish this with vector images. The key lines I'm dealing with are
ActionScript Code:
var curBd:BitmapData;
var curBmp:Bitmap;
curBmp=new Bitmap(new BitmapData(...;

I've got a project that heavily utilizes the new 3d artwork tools in Flash CS4. My question is has anyone done any tests to see if Flash is quicker with raster or vector graphics? My SWF really bogs down on slower machines.

I am setting out for a visualization project that will generate 1000+ sprites from dynamic data. The toolkit I am using (Flare) requires some optimization. I am trying to figure out some optimization techniques for Flash. How can I make Flash run fast when there are so many sprites on the stage, or maybe there is an optimization technique that doesn't involve generating so many sprites?

I tried the benchmark on this site: Array vs. Vector vs. Linked list. It tests the performance of iterating over said sequences.Remarkably, iterating over a linked list is approximately 2.5x faster than a Vector.<int>. What is the reason for this counter-intuitive result?

So, the actual act of scaling a vector object has a bit of a cost to the CPU, and so animating an object from one size to another has a significant cost -- but is there any additional cost for simply playing an animation that has previously been programatically scaled?
My initial thought was that if I took a character -- it's a little dude with a walk cycle, done in vector, and skooshed him to like 0.66 scaleX and scaleY then there would be some performance hit for even just playing his walk cycle in skooshed mode vs. playing it at normal size, but I can't manage to confirm my suspicion.

I am very interested in applying the warp/deform effect seen in the iPhone app Wobble (it lets you define regions on a raster image and then deforms those regions as it gets input from the accelerometer or the user's touch as if they had adopted faux soft-body physics) to a game I am making, but I'm not sure how this effect was achieved. How I might program an analogous effect using Flash and as3?

I'm itching to find the most effective way of importing my illustrator vectors into flash but keeping the file size as small as possible. At the moment i'm literally copying my vectors in illustrator and pasting them in Flash, it clearly works but the file sizes seem really high and its hindering the performance of my fla. Is there a more effective way of exporting? or optimizing the imported vectors once they're inside flash?

I have a project for mobile where some of my animations scenes look as though they are winding up or playing in slow motion (from the start). They start out slow for about three seconds, as if they are winding up or in slow motion, and then they run at a normal pace. It only happens on specific animations and is consistent on different devices. Also, once I come back to the scene (revisit), the animations run normally from start to finish.
I have had some success in speeding up some animation by doing the following: In some scenes, the following would occurr: 1) a character was walking 2) the character grew in size though tweening 3) the background was animated as well ect. In other words, there were several things happening in the animation. In this example, I made it less complex by keeping the character the same size and making the background static. This helped alot. However, for the aforemation animations, I have tried everything (I am aware of) and nothing has helped. I'm not sure what to do next.

We have a medium size Flex 3.6 application that contains around 20 different page views (managed via a single lazy ViewStack) each having multiple components. Most use custom renderers.All model data is loaded at startup and changes to model instances are communicated via binding and/or collection change events.Once the user has viewed each page at least once, all page views are instantiated and happily listen to update events.Which in effect means that each time a model instance changes, all interested views receive that event and compute derived data or trigger item-renderers.I have tested and confirmed this behaviour in a proof-of-concept application. Even when setting a list to being invisible, it still listens to collection change events and invalidates any renderer affected.What would you do?

I have recently been experimenting with animation in Flash, but now I've run into a problem-- whenever I try to add bones to a bitmap image I want to animate, I get a message saying that I "cannot link bitmap objects." Does this mean that bones can't be applied at all to raster graphics? I also tried converting the image to vectors via the Trace Bitmap function, but when I attempt to add bones to the result it complains that "the image is too complex. Please optimize or convert to a movie clip." I followed its directions, but it continued to complain that the image was too complex. As a sanity check, I drew a simple X on the frame with the pencil tool and received the same 'too complex' message from Flash when I tried to add bones to it.

I have created an app in CS5.5 for Android and iOS. I have tested on two Android devices and everyingthing works fine. However, on an iPad and iPhone the animations are really slow. Here are some more facts:
1) My project has many scenes and in the problems scene there are upwards of 1,200 frames. But even simple animations run slowly.
2) The frame rate is set for 24 fps.
3) I have created a universal app (iphone and ipad), publish resolution is standard at full screen.
4) Ironically, I have already tried caching as bitmap. That actually slowed my animations even more. I am truely at the end of the line here and don't have any possible solutions.

I'm creating a flash website in AS3 where the user can click a fullscreenbutton which works fine. Im not using the hardware mode because of the black borders it creates and I dont want that. The site is liquid in a sense it conforms to the browsers' size using Event.RESIZE.
The code is for fullscreen simple:
stage.displayState = StageDisplayState.FULL_SCREEN;
I'm using TweenLite to make transitions between pages and it works fine
UNTIL
I release fullscreen mode (escape) and go back to the browser. From then on all my transitions are extremely choppy (like 1 - 2 fps) and I can't figure out why. I had video on the pages but even when I completely removed the video from the pages the transitions are still choppy. When I go back to fullscreen the transitions are smooth again.

Does anyone know a decent algorithm for drawing a anti-aliased (smooth) quadratic bezier curves in a raster?
I could simply draw them as vectors and then copy the image to a raster..
Is there any clever yet freely available algorithm to draw the curve directly to the pixels? I am currently using the algorithm implemented here:[URL].. I am doing this for learning purposes and because I am hoping it would be faster than using the copy pixels from a Shape option. Here is an example showing the none-smooth bezier is faster than the regular bezier:[URL]..

when I create a medium or large text block, Flash (cs4) starts to work very slow, only a objet move or a click on stage takes a lot of time to process. My computer features should be ok... 4gb ram, intel 2 core duo 2.4 hz... The only thing that I think can be a problem is that I'm using Windows Vista 64 bit.

I have an image converted into MovieClip (background) and I have a mask MovieClip (bgMask) set to mask the image MovieClip like this:
[Code]....
In bgMask I have a few linear gradient shapes which I animate with shape tweens using keyframes. If I don't set cacheAsBitmap for both, nothing will happen since what I need is alpha masking and it will work only then. In this scenario is cacheAsBitmap working for me or agains me? (not that I have any choice). Still I could try to replace some of the shape tweens with MovieClips with solid shape in them and just move them around to uncover some part of the background, and where I want a smoother transition I would stick to the shape tweens. If the object that I've set cacheAsBitmap true to is no longer being animated moved sized and so on, would it be better to set cacheAsBitmap to it to false?
[Code]....

I am working on this cd-rom and have just reached testing stage for part 1 (of 5). There are lots of interactive activities, video and animations. For the activities, I dont know if I am just too tired but there seems to be items which are visible on my .swf on my computer that sometimes are visible and sometimes are not visible on the cd-rom, also in testing yesterday there sere some activities that seemed to not be working correctly (Althought they perform fine on the desktop version, on a reset of the cd-rom they then seemed to work. Is there anything that I need to take into account for the code being read off a CD to make it more bullet proof? I am stressing out a bit at the Unknown factor- I cannot continue to produce this resource if I cannot guarantee how it will perform in real life?
