Ruby :: Flash Communication Options For 2-player-games?

Feb 12, 2010

I am currently working on a project that embeds a flash game, that uses Smartfoxserver for the flash communication. That communication is mostly just synchronizing the cursor and object movements between the two players.Since I am not a flash guy, but a ruby programmer, I got curious: What kind of communication options does flash offer for this kind of time sensitive data exchange? I was thinking of writing a ruby-eventmachine based communication server to minimize the dependencies on external programs.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Player Color In Flash Games For Sprite Animation

Apr 27, 2009

We're trying to find the most optimal memory solution to doing Player Color in a flash game for sprite animation. We're using CS3 Action Script 3.0. Basically we're using sprite animation but currently for every player we create a duplicate set of animations with just different color. This is very expensive. Vector graphics tend to slow down performance too much for our games so we need to use bitmaps and would like to stick to that. So for a bitmap the alpha channel really only needs 2 values 0 for transparent 1 for draw the pixel. Is there any way I can use the other 254 values for a player color algorithm. The best we've come up with is to do 1 set of animations & 1 set of color mask animtions. So in total we would have 2 full set of animations for 2-x players. The Color mask seems to need to be 32 bits. So what I have is 2 questions.

1) Is there a way we can make 1 set of bitmap animations but use the 254 other values in the alpha channed to do player color?2) Is ther a way to use a Mask set of animations but only use 8 bit not 32 bit?

ActionScript 2.0 :: Making An FLV Player - Adding Timeline And Fullscreen Options?

Jun 26, 2009

I am in the process of making my first FLV player in Flash CS4, for videos I plan to upload on my site. The play/pause/rewind buttons seem simple enough. However, I have searched and can't find-a timeline 'duration' that tells how many minutes have been played and how many total there are-a fullscreen button that toggles full/not fullscreen in the browser-if possible, some way to manipulate the timeline (e.g. drag the cursor forward to make the movie skip ahead)or explain to me how to do thisAs I said, I have searched for the above and found the play/pause/rewind tutorials but no timeline/fullscreen ones.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Line Games - Transform A Line Drawn By The Player Into A Hit Detectable Sprite ?

Feb 13, 2009

I'm trying to work out how to create a simple demo that works as follows: A ball falls from the top of the stage.Player is able to draw a line anywhere on the stage. The ball will bounce/roll along the line such that the player can guide it at will. I don't think the coordinate rotation will be a problem for me but I can't figure out how to transform a line drawn by the player into a hit detectable sprite -- or realkly any way that I can get those line coordinates into my coordinate rotation routine. To keep it simple, I'm just working on the first part of the problem, getting the line to where I can hit test or know its position.Here is my code so far:

package
{
import flash.display.Sprite;
import flash.events.MouseEvent;[code]........

It always traces 0,0 instead of my current line coordinates - and even those I don't think would be sufficient.

Ruby On Rails :: Using Flash And Cross Domain?

Nov 14, 2010

I'm running a rails3 project with an external asset host for all javascript, images, swfs etc. This is on a completely different domain. So know I tried to embed some SWFs using swfobject. In development (same host) everything works fine, but in production (different hosts) it doesn't start the flash (firebug shows the file is loaded but nothing appears on the page). I already put this crossdomain.xml file in the root of the asset host but it does not change anything at all.

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE cross-domain-policy SYSTEM "http://www.adobe.com/xml/dtds/cross-domain-policy.dtd">
<cross-domain-policy>
<allow-access-from domain="*" />

[code]....

What can I do to make it work? The SWFs I'm using are not developed by me, so I cannot change them. Some are simple sounds, others are videos and small "apps". I don't want to have to make rails serve the swfs.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Ruby Controller Won't Redirect Page With Flash?

Oct 15, 2008

i am trying to build a site using ruby on rails and flash. i am trying to build a login page and i have my flash component with two text fields for user name and password. when the submit button is pressed, it sends the login info typed in to the text fields to the ruby controller via xml through a URLLoader. the controller then looks at this info and determines if it is correct or not and if it is, then it attempts to redirect the page in the view to another part of the website.

this is where the problem comes in. when the page is being redirected, it gets stuck and just says "transfering data from host" at the bottom but never redirects the page. this is all still on a local machine so it is not some sort of communication problem with the server. also if i replace the flash component with plain html it will redirect just fine. in addition to this, if i make it redirect from withen the flash component using navigateToURL that will work as well. the information is also getting sent correctly because it is setting off a COMPLETE event.

I need a flexible way to generate S3 policy files, base64 encode them, and then distribute the resulting signed policy to the client.

Is there a good library/gem for this, or do I need to roll my own?

I'll be using paperclip to store the file, as per: [URL]

Ruby On Rails :: Handle HTTPStatus Response 201 With AS3 / Flash / SWFUpload?

Nov 27, 2009

I'm using SWFUpload on a Rails site to allow for MP3 Uploads direct to Sound Cloud. To avoid having to first upload a large file to my server and push to Sound Cloud, I'm hitting their API directly via SWFUpload, passing necessary OAuth token data.Everything works - EXCEPT - Flash can't handle the HTTP response code that Sound Cloud's API returns (201). This ALWAYS triggers an unhandled IO Error with Flash. Even though SWFUpload allows me to override that in the JS, it breaks any response data (the URI to the uploaded file).

how I could somehow intercept the 201 code so that I can make it a 200 code for flash? I'm at a loss at how I can avoid this IO Error. I've tried try/catch statements around everything and have even recompiled SWFUpload to try new things to no avail.

Ruby On Rails :: How To Create Picture Slideshows In Flash Project

It would be nice if I could do things like slowly zoom into the images. I imagine there must be a plugin or something to handle this?

UI Design In Flash Games?

Mar 21, 2010

Background: I've been coding in VIM/C++/OpenGL for a long time.I've come to realize that this (VIM/C++/OpenGL) isn't the way to learn about programming fancy/cool-looking/futuristic UIs; and that the design of such UIs belongs more so in the artistic/designer world of Flash.

Anyway, I currently have a machine with MacOSX. What software should I install? What book should I read to learn about the artistic/design side of these futuristic UIs? [It's okay if the tools to design them are mouse clicking + graphical rather than coding based].

Question: what software packages + books to read to learn about creating fancy-looking / futuristic UIs in flash?

Actionscript 3 :: Using Too Much RAM In Flash Games?

Jan 22, 2012

On my venture for quick rendering within Flash, I've worked out that the only solution is to create sprite sheets on the fly. Sprite sheets are created from a MovieClip using BitmapData.draw().

I have a graphics manager class which has a method that accepts a MovieClip and an int. The MovieClip is the target to capture graphics from, and the int represents how many different angles the image can be rendered at within 360 degrees.

[Code]...

Any advice around this would be extremely helpful. Note: I have made sure to utilize BitmapData.dispose() within my own dispose() method defined by SpriteSheet to clear up RAM, I am more concerned about how much RAM I can use at one given time (all game assets that will render ready to be used).
