See All External File References In Flash?
Sep 12, 2010
I need to update the dynamic text in this flash file I have and export it to SWF. I've looked at the actionscript in all the frames and symbols but the only thing I've found so far are "stop();" 's
I tried exporting this to SWF to see if the file size was the same as the current working version on the site, and it was about 15kb smaller, and does not work at all.
How can I see all external file references in flash? I need to be able to tell my boss which files are needed or at least what is missing.

I need to disable all the aspects of functionality which access the client file system in a flash/flex application. I started having a look on how to do this. It appears that the package flash.filesystem need to be importated to allow the interaction with the file system. However, I did not find any reference to this package in the application. I am a beginner concerning these technologies so maybe I am missing a point here. Do I need to look into an other direction?

I need to create two combo boxes that are populated by an XML file. In the first combo box there are 13 choices and depending on what the user selects I need to populate the second combo box with the correct information. Now I can create the first combo box just fine but when I try to dynamically create the XML file name for the second combo box it doesnt seem to work. What I am doing so far is taking the data from the first combo box and adding the quotes and .xml with this piece of code:
PHP Code:
pModCombo = '"'+event_obj.target.selectedItem.data+"Combo"+".xml"+'"';
pModComboXML = new XML();
pModComboXML.ignoreWhite = true;
pModComboXML.load(pModCombo);
If you trace that code it creates the file name just fine however the xml file will not load. If I replace that code with the normal xml code like this:
PHP Code:
pModComboXML = new XML();
pModComboXML.ignoreWhite = true;
pModComboXML.load("new.xml");
The second xml file seems to load just fine. However, if I create an if statement with all the different xml file names I will have to update the swf every time I add a new choice in the first combo box. So my question is does anyone know how to dynamically create the xml file name?
PHP Code:
pmComboXML = new XML();
pmComboXML.ignoreWhite = true;
pmComboXML.load("brands combo.xml");

I can't seem to remove / unload the external swf files e.g when the carousel.swf (portfolio) is displayed and I press the about button the about content is overlapping the carousel (portfolio) . How can I remove / unload an external swf file from the main flash file and load a new swf file, while at the same time removing garbage collection from memory?

I have a bit of a memory leak issue in my Flex application, and the short version of my question is: is there any way (in AcitonScript 3) to find all live references to a given object? What I have is a number of views with presentation models behind each of them (using Swiz). The views of interest are children of a TabNavigator, so when I close the tab, the view is removed from the stage. When the view is removed from the stage, Swiz sets the model reference in the view to null, as it should. I also removeAllChildren() from the view.
However when profiling the application, when I do this and run a GC, neither the view nor the presentation model are freed (though both set their references to each other to null). One model object used by the view (not a presenter, though) IS freed, so it's not completely broken. I've only just started profiling today (firmly believing in not optimising too early), so I imagine there's some kind of reference floating around somewhere, but I can't see where, and what would be super helpful would be the ability to debug and see a list of objects that reference the target object. Is this at all possible, and if not natively, is there some light-weight way to code this into future apps for debugging purposes?

I understand how weak references work, but I am bit confused regarding it's use in actionscript event listeners. Consider the example below:
public class Rectangle extends MovieClip {
public function Rectangle() {
var screen:Shape=new Shape();
[code]...
If the Rectangle object has no other references, then it is a candidate for garbage collection, but since there is an event listener within the object, the event dispatcher holds a reference to the object, even though there are no other references to the object(other than the one held by the event listener). Hence it is prevented from being garbage collected. Is this the reason why weak event listeners are prescribed? Is the flash player so naive that, it cannot figure out that the event listener is defined within the same object?

I'm loading a bunch of images into my AS2 flash movie, and I've encountered some strangeness.
Roughly, my code looks like this:
function doTheLoading()
{
m_imageClips = [];
[Code].....
why does my array content seem to change when in the onLoadComplete call? If the array is out of scope, then why can I still see the length of the array and determine the type of the contents?

I'm looking to create a flashBuilder document which uses seperate MXML files as "views" which are controlled by states - I believe it's a design pattern of sorts but I'm relatively new to FlashBuilder. I was wondering if anyone knew what design pattern it was and if I can be pointed in the direction of some good references! FYI I'm looking into using FlashBuilder to design Android apps

Long time ago I've been creating some as 2.0 projects, all of them based on the code within the timeline. I wanted to start learning as 3.0 based on classes rather on timeline but I find it confusing and difficult to understand introduction into the classes. I can't get to understand why the following example is not working :
I've got 3 files:
main.fla with main class "Main"
Code:
no code
Main.as
Code:
package {
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import projectconfig.Configurator;
public class Main extends MovieClip {

I turn to you for help, dear sweet Kirupa Forumites. First, let me explain the problem: I have a flash file reading an external text file for the content. Everything works perfectly for nearly everyone - you click a menu button, and the content text comes up fine. However, a couple of people have found that the text shows up as "undefined". I have checked the player versions of the people where it doesn't work, and it is the same as for those where it does work, so that ain't the problem.
I don't understand why it works perfectly for nearly everyone, but a small number of people have this "undefined" text problem. It seems to be a problem with loading the external text file, but I don't know why. I have a main flash movie, and load the text in the first frame, using the following:
var my_content = new LoadVars();
my_content.load("content.txt");
my_content.onLoad = function(success){
if (success){
[Code]...
I then have a couple of dynamic text boxes in the main movie - one called ErrorText (for displaying an error message to the user) and one called ContentText (for displaying the content). I use an external menu swf which jumps to a specific frame in the main movie, depending on which button is clicked. Actionscript on the main movie frame for the first button does the following, with the other frames similarly configured:
ContentText.htmlText = my_content.content1;
stop();
My external text file is properly configured (content1=blah blah&content2=other blah blah) etc.
Does anyone have any advice on how I can solve this particular weird problem??

I am having a nightmare using CSS to style HTML within a dynamic textfield in my flash doc. From what i now understand after much trial and error and reading online, CSS doesn't even work properly in flash even for the tags that it does understand (which are few and far between anyway). For some reason my layout is getting completely screwed up in certain scenarios (predominantly when there are images present too) when i hover over links (which are styled in an external CSS file). If i remove the external CSS styling (which only contains the following simple code):
a:link {text-decoration: none;}
a:active {text-decoration: none;}
a:visited {text-decoration: none;}[code]....
Then everything works fine (but no links are underlined as standard or on hover). Does anyone know of any way to style the links without using an external CSS file (all i want to do is have no underline as standard and then underline them on hover). As this is from user input into a text editor I cannot place these links manually on the page in flash as they could be anywhere, I need a way of parsing the HTML and then displaying it accordingly.

how to create save files for flash games. So far, so good. But here's the problem: To improve game loading performance, I was thinking of loading external flash files. Instead of building everything inside the same .fla file, I have one main .fla file, and one or two other .fla files loaded when needed.
The flash I want to load happens to be this mini computer used for puzzle solving and can unlock new applications. And this is my problem: I want to create a save file for the game -and- for this mini computer, which is an external flash file, so it keeps track on many apps have been unlocked. Save the progress from both the main game and the mini-computer. Is it possible? Or is it better to make everything inside the same .fla instead of multiple .flas?
TL;DR: Is it possible to create a save game for a flash game AND its external flash files being loaded in the same game? If so, how can I make it happen?

Got a pitcular problem/question and im not sure it is possible. Im creating a project that enables the viewer to access a load of files (Pdf's and doc's) through flash. The problem is, these files will be added to and taken from about 4 times a year and there is anywhere from 2 to 20 folders in each folder containing these files.so What I want to do is have an image that when clicked on opens a new box that has links in it that these links are displayed from an xml or html then I need to have that code tell flash to open another box that has links displayed from another XML of HTML that has the links to the actual files being called.i guess the question is:Can flash be controlled by a link called from out side of flash?

I have 1 swf file which generated through 3rd party tool.Now I want to embed this file into empty flash file and want to save as new, I tried with following options,
1) import option ( File > Import ) but it is importing only Images and symbols. I want my original file as it in new file.
2) loader.load(), but this will load my external file at runtime only and to work smoothly it require both the files.
I want same but in design time, so I can add some extra functionality to it.Is it possible to embed external swf file as it is in new flash file in CS4?
