ActionScript 2.0 :: 3D With Flash - Make Rotating Squares Or Triangles?
Jan 25, 2002
what's the main idea behind 3D in Flash. I mean, I've seen a lot of scripts to make rotating squares or triangles or whatever, but never managed to understand how they were made.

I'm actually coding this in Java (with which I have just a few days experience), but as far as the logic goes, I thought this would still be an appropriate place. I'm making a Tetris-eque game and having trouble with rotation. Each shape (rectangle, L, "step", etc) consists of 4 or 5 smaller squares (image below), and I want to be able to rotate the pattern of squares 0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees around a designated point.
x = originX + cos(angle) * radius;
y = originY + sin(angle) * radius;
I thought I understood these, but apparently not, since I can't seem to get it working For each shape, I would declare the x, y coordinates for each of its smaller squares, relative to one another. Then, I'd send these values to a function that should take the pattern and rotate it according to the specified angle. In Java (to the best of my knowledge), the upper-left is always the "registration point" for graphics. So, I set the relative coordinates for the squares of each shape such that the left side of the leftmost square is at x = 0 and the top side of the uppermost square is at y = 0. Here's an example, the shape of a plus sign (+).
Code:
//top-center
x = squareWidth;
y = 0;
[code]....
no rotation (just the shapes)and this is what happens when I implement the rotation adjustment.

I'm work with PS and AI and am a begginer with Flash and currently I'm making this clean cool looking header for a server I play on. This is what it to looks like: [URL]. However I don't know how to make the small squares motion, I want them to "spawn" around the text with alpha slowly growing, not behind the text so it's clean and to move outwards and slowly disappear.

This is a test program to measure the time it takes Flash to draw a triangle 10,000 times.
The app (code below) calls runTimeTest() every N seconds which draws the triangle 10,000 times.
Now for the "interesting" part: each call takes increasingly more processor until after about the 6th or 7th call it goes to "infinity" (see screen shot of TaskManager)

I'm building a small 3D engine for a game I'm working on. I've got my basics sorted: textured triangles with backface culling. However depth sorting is proving to be a difficult problem.I'm calculating the face Z by averaging out the 3 points that make up the triangular face. The longer faces sometimes overlap the smaller faces since they have a larger Z value and therefore rise up in the depth sorted display list.Is there a way I can use the area of the polygon to influence the depth sorting in any way? Or are there algorithms to accurately detect which triangle is above which triangle?

At first I thought making tringles out of Polys was an easy concept. Considering I start with a quad of ABCD then I could convert this to two triangles of ABC and ADC, which is easy. However an alternate answer is BCD and BAD. The real differnce between the two outputs is exacerbrated when I now calculate the Normals for the two new faces. Also in some cases the edges break against the UV texture map in an undesirable way. Obviously in choosing the output faces I should be choosing the method as well that doesnt produce highly acute angles above all else. Unfortuantely I also have a number of pentagons and hexagons to render as well.

I have multiple angle images of an object and I want the result to be the same as the link here. [URL] I don't know flash at all but it seems like there would be a simple program (even if I have to pay) that allows me to import the images, set the rotation speed and other settings and then hit export to .flv file or something. Does anyone know of a program to do this, or a simple method?

I'm trying to make a rotating menu for a sushi webpage, and I've almost got the coding for it solid. But I've run into a few bumps in the road. If I click on the arrows fast the rotation gets really screwed up, if I change from left to right, or right to left right away the animation screws up.And also the rotation messes up on the left arrows rotation (clockwise). Anyway, here is the code, I'm also uploading the .fla with just the menu.(This goes on the first frame before the animation)
Code:
var resting = TRUE;
var Rotation_Sushi = 1;
///////// Right Arrow[code].....

I am trying to achieve something similar to the flash movie in the below link. [URL]. As we drag the points of the triangle, the coordinates labels, ( A(1,2)) are properly aligned and arrange themselves so that they never collide with each other and never falls inside the triangle.

I am looking for useful tips for reducing or removing triangle overlapping in Away3D.I already tried to increas segmentsW and segmentsH but it doesn't solve the problem.Here is a snapshot of my problem (The complex cubes are made of Plane objects, Maybe there is a better way to build the complex cubes ?)

I am trying to calculate the top most intersection of an arbitrary number of planes, with no joy! I am using actionscript, but just need find an algorithm that i can implement.
Problem:
consider 3 vertical axis.The user enters 3 points for each triangle/plane such that the points of the triangle lie on one of the axis.The user can enter an arbitrary number of triangles I need to find the topmost layer of these triangles and display it on the screen as well as the coordinates of interection.
Here is a picture to clarify what I mean with 2 triangles:
However, when we allow for more than 2 triangles, I get awkward lines of intersection.

I've created a movieclip that is supposed to begin the movie with a rotation (it's a globe) and at a specific frame it should beginning to fade out. I've inserted the folowing code to the rotation and for this action it is working perfectly
Code:
onClipEvent (enterFrame) {
i = getProperty(this,_rotation);
setProperty(this,_rotation,i + 0.5);
}
But, when I try to insert any other line for the _alpha, a sintaxe error occurs and the rotation doesnt works.

I have downloaded the following code and tried to change it. It works so far, but the attached MC are "pulsating" - if I change them with another MC (with text inside) I can't use them as a Menu links - they are "pulsating" too much and I can't read/see the text properly. where in code I can change(reduce) this "pulsation"? how can I make the MC-s cklickable=working as a buttons with mouseover/mouseout effects (changing color etc.)

I'm trying to do a transition that you've probably seen many times. Transitioning one image to another using a grid of squares where each square fades at a slightly different time.I've made a complex movie clip made up of several other movie clips with all the squares fading at the rate I'm looking at. When I just play the color squares it works fine, but the minute I turn that master movie clip into a mask for the image I loose the transition/fade completely--just an on off thing.

I need to calulate the pixels inside the squares and put them inside an array:
The main square rotates(see screen2) and i have the angle.
Something like attached code.
I have the following values:
- x/y of the main square. ( reference point )
- Width/height of the main square
- Width/height of all the squares
- Angle of main square..

How do you go about drawing only the outline of squares using drawTriangle. Currently I am using lineStyle to draw my lines but obviously that outlines each triangle. I know i can just draw Squares out using drawRect with no fill but that seems like a waste.

Now I could do with some hints as to how this should be done Hopefully someone will help me out here.
Ok, basically I have a map (a jpg/gif file), which should be divided into squares (like a chessboard). Each square has a coordinate (X, Y) and other pictures should be shown on top of a map square - like a small house or something (also a jpg/gif file).
It should also be possible to hide some (most) of the squares from view - like with a black square on top or whatever. Perhaps Flash should also make some lines between each square to divide them.
Furthermore only a part of the map should be shown through a window (using a mask, I guess) as the map could be large and buttons at the edge could be used to scroll the map.
