View 6 RepliesI was trying to use the photo gallery tutorial from this site the code was done by sbeener I wanted to use the same concept for adding external text for each image. So far I have only been able to figure out how to load the text but I have not figured out how to be able to change the text to correspond to the image.

I am still using flash MX. I'm pulling random text from a textfile (array.txt) into movieclip instance textbox.[code]All is good, but now my question is if I can have a text effect as well. For example having the random quotes typed out as they appear.
View 16 RepliesI've managed to piece together a flash website with my limited as3 knowledge. The text is loaded from external text files and styled with an external css file.
It's working perfectly in Firefox and Explorer but it only works SOME of the time in Safari (on my mac).It's hit and miss. Sometimes it styles the text sometimes it doesn't.

I'm having a problem adding numbers that are loaded to dynamic text boxes. I'm using AS 2 (Flash 8). The numbers are loaded to the textboxes from a text file using a loadVars command. The text boxes have instance names of TELEMATICS and BOOK - I have a third textbox called (instance name) RESULT - the text file is called TEST1.txt. My problem is that after trying (and trying) several solutions in tutorials I am unable to add the values in TELEMATICs and BOOK to get a (sum) total in RESULT. My code to load the numbers is as follows:

i have a text field called Moneytxt and i want it so when u click on a box it somtimes adds 200 and somtimes adds 100 ( also i would like it to add up in numerical value example: if it adds 100 and it has 200 it equals 300 not 200100). I also have penniestxt where sometimes it adds 30 and somtimes it adds 40.

View 1 RepliesHow to add text to a dynamic text field so that a line of text is created, and you can keep on adding to it. I need it to simply add a number to the text line everytime certain buttons are pushed rather than multiplying it like a score in a game and I think I have gone wrong somewhere.
Here's my example: I have multiple buttons on the stage and each button has a different value applied to it (eg: BTN1 has 1, BTN2 has 2, BTN3 has 3 and so on...)
So (as an example) I was wanting to end up with the following in my dynamic text field "1132" if "BTN 1" was clicked 2x and "BTN 3" was clicked 1x and "BTN 2" was clicked 1x......
which equals...... 1132
I'm trying to use the following actionscript but instead of it adding to my line of dynamic text it adds to it like so... 1+1 = 2

Problem adding an external nav swf (bottom of attached code).1046: Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant: Loader. I used the loader code in another projectwithout problems.It was in my actions layer on the timeline however the loader x,y addChild were NOT in a function.
View 2 RepliesI have a list of buttons that each load an external SWF when pressed. When a button is pressed, the SWF loads into a movieclip on the main timeline, and the list dissappears (so only one is loaded at a time). The main timeline moves to a frame with a back button. When the back button is pressed, I'm trying to remove the loaded SWF and make the menu visible again to load another SWF.This all works, but when I get back to the menu and try to load a new SWF, I get the error:TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.at CrystalBall/PL_LOADING()rystalBall being the first SWF I tried to load. The error fires like, four or five times too. I know it has something to do with the code trying to remove the loader before it loads it again, but I'm not sure how to fix it

What I have: A scrolling thumbnail portfolio page that is linked to external xml file so the client can add pictures as needed by adding to the xml file. (actionscript from within Flash is enclosed just in a .txt document, along with the .xml file)
What I need: To add a description to each image, so when you click on the thumbnail, it loads the larger picture, along with the description. I have a mc called description_txt where I would like the description to load for each image, but don't know how to set it up to associate with each image. I have seen XML files that call to a different .txt document for each image, with the descriptions in it, but I'm not sure of the mechanics of it. . . how I should set up the .txt file, how I can call to it, and how to revise my actionscript to retrieve it.
I'm trying to create an application with an extensive user interface. I've come pretty far and decided I wanted to really take advantage of the object oriented features that AS3 has to offer.
I've started off by created a few classes: User, Background and Main. Main is the document class of course. In the document class I have a function "resetStage" that clears the display list of all children. This is because I have many layers of images making up the UI and they all show up at startup unless I remove them. Besides I want to see where the stuff is positioned in the Authoring tool so I don't want to just create movieclips and then delete them.
My issue is with my Background class. Basically what I want to do is create a new DisplayObjectConatiner called bgContainer or something and then put all the background stuff in it. (The main background image and a status bar image). Then add the bgContainer and its children to the stage. This should all happen when the object is constructed.

I'm trying to make a navigation system for my website where each nav item is loaded as an external .swf. I was able to get that functionality in place. The problem is I want to add a preloader for these external swfs as well.

View 2 RepliesFor some reason, when I import my external html to my page, I'm getting extra line breaks. Even if I don't use a <br> in the line, but do a hard return, I'm getting a line break. So that's weird too. As well, it doesn't do the bold (which may be an embedding issue, as I'm using a nonstandard font. I've got the normal font embedded. of coruse, the italics works, which is weird.). What am I doing wrong?I don't think it does anything, but I've set the textbox to "render as HTML," if that effects anything.

How can I replace text loaded from an external file with text from another external file? Using setInterval and calling the .load from a function or something? In the example below I'm calling an external text file, could this also work with an .xml file with cycling through the children?

View 2 RepliesStructure: There is 1 main file that loads external SWF files depending on what is clicked on.One of the external SWF files loads its text from external text files. This works fine when viewing the SWF applet on its own. But when viewing as a whole site, the text doesnt appear. Very annoying.I made that particular SWF on my mums computer running Flash MX 2004The flash file itself uses the Scrollbar component from MX.Could someone tell me why the text doesnt load in this scenario? It runs fine on its own, just not as an external SWF.

I'm going to be building a site for a photographer and would like to be able to do something like the thumbnail navigation in this example: [URL] I'm assuming it's adding the thumbnails to the Display Object via an array based on an external XML file, and displaying them once their corresponding full-size images are loaded ... Perhaps it's building the nav simply by looking to see how many photos there are in a folder on the server (i.e. no discreet XML added for each shot). Not sure if this idea is even possible -- would like to hear from any of you if in fact it is.

I am doing this so I can rollover the viewing window and have it appear. I cannot get any code to work to control the timeline (which is broken down into sections with individual MC's in each section.
What I am looking for is the code to apply to the buttons on the external controller to control the playing of the movie.
I'd like to create a bunch of links in a text field.
There's no way to do this in the IDE as nearly as I can tell. One link per field.
I can do it in actionscript by parsing the text in the fields and comparing it to entries in an XML, finding the entries and then adding the links to the htmlText of the field. Is there any way to easily parse words taking punctuation into account? Of course I can use the split function, but that doesn't sort out periods, commas, and such.
I am kind of new to flash and used a template to build a flash website. One of my pages has links on it that when you click them open a pop-up text box. I've looked at the actions of the link to try to figure out how to add an image but can't seem to figure it out. The actions of the link also reference a text file.
