ActionScript 2.0 :: Same Instance Name Makes Code Only Work For One Object?

I happen to have this real massive code for an object in my game.(please guys dont move this to the game section the problem has hardly anything to do with that) One of them is a propane tank, the other a box and the third is a barrel.(it doesnt really make much diff i just want you guys to get a better picture of whats going on)So inside of each movieclip i put in this MASSIVE code.

it works fine but when i put in an instance name the whole thing messes up.only one of them works and all the others follow commands from the same one. so lets say if presse is true for the working on, presse will be true for all the rest. The problem still happens if i use different combinations of objects like 3 crates or 1 propane tank and 2 crates. Can someone please help me find a solution without changing the instance name. By the way '_root.hater' is the character.

Does creating a new instance of an Object that uses an identical name to an older instance, delete the previous instance? Or should the original instance be deleted first? The code uses a ridiculous amount of XML vars. Isn't it less memory intensive to parse the XML and save the properties to an Object, and then delete the XML Object, rather than keep the XML Object around and reference it's child nodes directly? Is it better form to break up a huge XML file (>600lines/3200vars) into smaller chunks?

I'm wondering if having large peces of text commented in your code, will affect the file size of your exported file, when you put it on the net.About half of my code is commented, so removing it would reduce my file size significantly, and thus decrease loading time. or is commented code removed automatically when you export the .fla file?

I am trying to get my mc to move up and have copies of that same mc follow about every 40 pixels. Basically a scroll with my "8ball" mc. Showing the mc every 30 pixels in the y-direction. I am using this code in the mc and I get a message saying that the script is causing Flash Player to run slowly.[code]

I use eventListeners to jump between frames.One of my frames displays a video. I imported the video as a component using the 'import video' function.It plays fine.When navigating away from the video I use the myVideo.stop(); command in AS3 to stop the video from continuing to play.or some reason, when I do this the buttons on my main page stop working.The code I use on the movie frame is:

I have a pretty simple function here where I want to start dragging a video scrubber along the x axis within bounds, and drop it when they let go. The code works perfectly if I don't specify a bounding rectangle (except it doesn't restrict to x-axis). What's up with that? Here's my non-working code:

Note the red code, I need to repeat this an unknown amount yet multiple times but with the number on the end of enemy incremented by 1 each time. It starts with 0 as you can see the code just above the red. I heard about for loops using 'i' but im unsure about how to use it.
edit: ah, this forum isnt letting me highlight red. Everything in this editor is also failing. well, when I say code in red i mean this code:

The main AS timeline creates the enemy instance and calls them via the timer class. Inside the instance enemy movie clip there is some script to do a basic tween and there are functions to remove the enemy and to declare you've hit the enemy. The problem I'm having is when I try to call my KillEnemy function with a MouseEvent.CLICK (or MOUSE_DOWN, MOUSE_UP) event, it isn't registering, I realised this after testing the same function to listen for a MOUSE_OVER, MOUSE_OUT, it worked perfectly.
Can anyone explain why this is happening? Not just that the mouse seems to be a little delicate, even with the roll over listener called it isn't registering the event unless it hits a specific part of the movie clip enemy, which leads me to believe the movieclip is somehow built incorrectly? But even when testing the game with extreme settings (i.e. leaving the enemies on screen for a long time) the mouse clicks aren't registering still. Something is broken! My problem is that I listen for a mouse down event and when that occurs I add a new instance of a certain object to the stage, pushing it also to an array:

I am wrapping my brain around OOP in AS2. I am making two posts on two different subjects. My question here is: when should I use local instance variables, and when should I attach new properties to the instance object? (Feel free to correct my terminology.) Let's say I have a class for a scrolling background, which scrolls when I mouse over its edge. I want to put these values somewhere:
1) How wide is the border in which a mouseOver makes it scroll? This is basically a semi-constant I set it up once and keep it the same, unless the user changes it in an options menu to make the border wider or narrower. Call this scrollBorderWidth.
2) How fast is the background scrolling now? I want to track this so I can smoothly change the scroll speed over several frames. This is often changed. Call this scrollSpeed.
It seems I have two ways I can store and access these values and darned if I know which is better practice. METHOD A: Make them local variables in the class, so the scrolling background instance has them as local vars. I set them up thusly:

I have a swf that I would like to cookie to control the frame the user see's depending on whether it is a first time site visit or returned visit. As stupid as my question might sound, i have spent the last 2 weeks reading oop books; but could use some guidance. I have a flash project that is basically a supped up slide show. On the stage i have the following: main_mc (instance name = images_mc) = movieclip which holds "pictures" ui1 (instance name = ui1_mc) = user interface that allows user to draw on picture (when drawing is enabled) ui2 (instance name = ui2_mc) = activates invisible hit areas (buttons) on select pics, when hit area is clicked, we jump to another pic in the main_mc.
I accomplished all of this on the timeline, but am updating the code to OOP. I am having A HELL OF A TIME trying to figure out how to store references to the instances (images_mc etc..), so i can control them from varying class files. I have found it is easy to control the instances from the documentclass, but not from unrelated class files. Example: images_mc.stop(); works in document class; but ovieclip(Parent).images_mc.stop() doesn't seem to work from any class file.(ui2 class file for example);

I am using onLoad and onEnterFrame events to dynamically align my_mc. The problem I face is the following:When I put my code in the mc instance it works beautifully but when I put it in the timeline it does not work.[code]I assume it is something tiny, perhaps it is an issue with the correct paths of x and y. I tried in many ways changing paths to this._x and my_mc._x but unsuccessfully.

I am making a game where I reference "Player_mc" quite a lot. I have a bunch of full characters (movieclips) in the library that work as the player when put on the stage and referenced as "Player_mc". I need a code that can reference those characters (movieclips) in the library, and move them onto the stage and name them "Player_mc". Also I need a way of removing an existing "Player_mc" so that another character can be referenced and brought onto the stage as "Player_mc". I tried something interesting recently. I had code effecting an object with the instance name : object_mc.Now I added another object and gave it the same instance name.The result was, that the code only effected the most recent added object (no error).Is there a way in flash to have multiple objects with the same instance name all being affected by one piece of code?

In Adobe Flash, I have a movie clip that is added to the stage when the keyboard is pressed. I want it to travel across the screen and disappear once it reaches the edge of the stage. At the moment I use this but the image appears and then stops. Here is my code:

I am trying to make a game where I am going to have different "Tiles" for each type of terrain. in my code I am calling on "Tile_GOLD" like this for a hit test:

and so my problem is that Multiple instance names don't really work, so I tried exporting for actionscript and that didn't really help either. So is there a way that I can call the tile in the characters code or is there a way that I can determine the hittest in the tile? Not necessarily for all of them to go to the next frame but to maybe have them make the character not be able to move. Also if anyone could give me a hittest code for making a mc not be able to go through an object

i have a set of images with incrementing names image1, image2, image3 etc and i have a series of empty movie clips on the stage also with incrementing names mc1, mc2, mc3, etc
i wanted to use this:
mc_empty.addChild(my_loader);
to display a series of images into the series of movieclips on stage my_loader is an incrementing variable, and that works fine with the .addChild however, when specifying what addChild is loading content into, it doesnt seem to favour variables as names, it only seems to like real instance names thought i could use
getChildByName("mc_empty"+num)
like this:
getChildByName("mc_empty"+num).addChild(my_loader) ;
but that doesnt seem to work with .addChild either

This is a very basic question. I'm rather new. Just wondering how one creates and manipulates dynamic objects, when they were designed in the library- not dynamically.
I want to make symbols in the library (linked to classes) and then dynamically create them and manipulate them in the actionscript code. But when I create them in the code, any instance names of sub-symbols cannot be referenced...
The instance name is "instance244" and not "leaf_text" which I set under [properties>instance name]

For some reason my buttons don't work when I stop on frame 34. Everything else works, but when I stop on 34 the button/actions won't work anymore. I have no idea why. I checked everything that I can think of. The buttons are labeled correctly on the frame.
