stmt.sqlConnection = sqlConn;
stmt.text = "SELECT COUNT(user_id) FROM tbl_user WHERE status_status ='Away'";

I'm working through a book called Foundation Game Design with Flash, and I'm finding the Flash IDE confusing. I've been programming for several years, so working with AS3 directly is far easier than trying to understand symbols and nested symbols and the difference between graphics and movie clips and scoping issues and all that -- when tied into the IDE.
How many of you who are making games in AS3 also use the Flash IDE? Can anyone recommend a resource that is AS3 heavy and Flash IDE light? I don't care how much time I may or may not save by using things like the timeline, I just want to understand what I'm using.

I'm attempting to use CS4 (PC/Vista, if that matters) to create a SWF file that will basically act as a "library" of commonly used symbols. This SWF would be loaded at runtime by other SWFs, which could then use the symbols within it, including all art and code assets.

Basically, I have created a short exercise for an elearning programme that requires the user to drag and drop an object to a number of predetermined places - some of which are correct, some of which are incorrect places. Therefore, on release of the button, the object will either be placed in the correct position, or else return back to its starting place.This is my current code in AS 2.0:
on(press){
startDrag(this,false,0,0,400-this._width/2,450-this._height);
}

I'm been having a bit of problem with Flash 4 and text variables. This is what I want to do: I have a blank title that I want people to complete: The (something) of the (something) (something) where people select words from lists to complete the title. I also want it to be centred on a mock book cover. The problem is that I can't work out how to make the whole title into one variable, which I can them place on the cover. Going by the tutorials I've seen, it should be something like:

I'm having trouble with dynamic text. I have a symbol with dynamic text fields in it. In the action script file I want to change the text of these text fields like this:
textFieldName.text = "new text";
But nothing happens. I cannot see any text when I play the movie. Also I tried adding a dynamic text field directly to stage and change the text with
textFieldName.text = "new text";
I can see the new text when I play the movie. Then I added my symbol that has the dynamic texts in it, and the text of the text field that is directly on stage disappears. When I delete my symbol, the text is back there. I'm using Flash CS5 and ActionScript 3.0.

Flash's dynamic text rendered as HTML will not render or Try it yourself, it wont work.Yes, I embedded the symbols, I also embedded ALL 39477 GLYPHS just to test it - and it still didn't work.
Yes, I tried £ ¥ (insertAmpersandHere)#163; (insertAmpersandHere)#165; I also tried %A3 %A5 but perhaps I applied it wrong?Here is my code - all instances in the script of   £ ¥ %A3 %A5 do not show the symbols:
htmlText = "My text:   £ ¥ (insertAmpersandHere)#163; (insertAmpersandHere)#165; %A3 %A5 ";
Remember, this text is to be rendered as HTML - when it is not rendered as HTML, the symbols are rendered (because I embedded them) but I want this text rendeed as HTML, unfortunately, Flash overlooked the 2nd and 4th of biggest economies in the world's currency symbols?

I have a dropdown box that is used to select a Category. I need the Flash Application to send the value of Category plus the search string in my textbox to my Access query and return results for each product meeting selection criteria. The Flash Application is calling an ASP.NET web service which in turn queries an MS Access database.
To start, how do I define the category ID and search value in my Actionscript 3 code?I've placed a series of 12 or so objects that will be populated with the product description, title and price. How do I setup each field to be dynamic text associated with the title description and price from my query results? If there are more than 12 products returned by the query, how do I add an additional page of objects to house more than 12 query results?

I have a database which has 2 tables:
CREATE TABLE RecipeDB (
RecipeID INT PRIMARY KEY AUTO_INCREMENT,
Name VARCHAR,[code]........
I also have an actionscript, in which I have ingArr:Array of ingredient strings.Now, I would like to realize the following queries here:
1) Select (all fields) one recipe which has the most of ingredients from the array. If more than one record have the same amount of matches, then divide the number of matches by total number of ingredients in recipe and return the one with the highest ratio. If there are no matches return nothing.
2) As above, but return 10 recipes with the most matches and do not perform check for equal number of matches. Sort the results by the number of matches.

I've looked up quite a few tutorials, how-to's, etc. on how to pass a query string into my SWF, but it isn't working. The page where the SWF resides is an ASPX page, and this is the code I used:
Code:
Select all <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="[URL]"
width="756" height="433" id="gallery" align="middle">
<param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" />
<param name="allowFullScreen" value="false" />
<param name="movie" value="gallery.swf?ProjID=<%=Request.QueryString["ProjID"]%>" />
<param name="quality" value="high" />
[Code] .....
As you can see, it pulls the "ProjID" querystring and is supposed to pass it into Flash. I have executed the page and viewed the source to make sure it is pulling the querystring appropriately, as shown below:
Code:
Select all<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="[URL]"
width="756" height="433" id="gallery" align="middle">
<param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" />
<param name="allowFullScreen" value="false" />
<param name="movie" value="gallery.swf?ProjID=1" />
[Code] .....
I used "1" for the value, and "1" was what is in the page source, so I know it's at least getting that far. As for what is in the ActionScript, here it is:
Code:
Select allvar myProj = root.loaderInfo.parameters.ProjID;
var myGalleryXML2 = new XML();
myGalleryXML2.ignoreWhite = true;
myGalleryXML2.load("[URL]"+myProj);
myGalleryXML2.onLoad = function(success) {
if(success){
_root.myImages = myGalleryXML2.firstChild.childNodes;
_root.myImagesTotal = myImages.length;
It is supposed to load XML from an ASPX page that builds the XML from a database depending on the project ID (ProjID). If I hardcode the variable to "1" (or whatever other ProjID), it works and the correct images are shown for the respective ID. However, I can not get it to pass the ID from the URL to the Flash file. I've even tried "_root.ProjID", and a QueryString class I found through Google, as well as passing the ProjID through Param tags as FlashVars with no luck.

asically in my company we use Flash with XML to create traininig materials. One of the pages we create is full of links to other swf files to load for resources (basically static pages with a picture and linked mp3 files).The main page that houses all these links loads an xml page then we have these "link movies" that call upon a node of the xml. Basically on the movie clip the code is:
Code:
onClipEvent (load) {
//Set the name of the XML document
